Are those the passenger cars, already in town for their CWS display?  A little early, but I guess they don't get much use...

1.  Actually, the are stored in council Bluffs.  Just north of the Avenue G viaduct there is a huge white building.
2.  Omaha is just one stop on a big tour of the steam engine all over the Midwest and down to Little Rock so the second passenger train I posted (photos by the Durham) the cars are being taken out taken out to Cheyenne to hook up with the steam engine.
3.  The first passenger train i posted photos was an engineering special.  Execs from UP were going out to inspect the system.
4.  They run Business and Engineering trains for the Execs, Customer care special specials to treat customers, and Operation Life Saver Specials to teach dangers of the railroad.

Basically in the summer, UP has passenger trains all over the place.  They have 48 passenger cars total.

With all the Flooding in the Area, the Union Pacific is detouring trains over the Iowa Interstate Railroad to give UP Maintenance Of Way Workers more track time.  Last night/This Morning, the Union Pacific 1995, Chicago and North Western Heritage Unit detoured over the Iowa Interstate.  It was scheduled to arrive in to Council Bluffs around 11:30 this morning, however when I woke up, the emails said it would be close to CB.  I went over to the IAIS CB yard to find the 1995 changing crews right up on the north end.  After that I got ready and when on a short "chase".  Terrible lighting on the CB Shots, but I made it work...

1.  Iowa Interstate Yard in CB changing crews.
Image

2.  I headed over to the Rock Island Depot in CB to wait for it to roll by
Image

3.  Rock Island Depot
Image

4.  Heading towards the UP
Image

5.  After that I headed over to the UP Pool Yard where the IAIS Terminates
Image

6.  Then I headed over to the Amtrak Depot for one last shot before I needed to get to work.  However right as the 1995 appeared so did a BNSF!  I thought what horriable timing but.....
Image

7.  I think it all worked out for the best when you see this shot and the next shot!
Image

8.  This is probably the catch of the day.
Image

9.  And one shot going away.
Image

10. I also got this awesome catch on the way to work.... The Dominator!

There was a lot of interesting Power in Omaha this weekend.

First off, Saturday I missed a nice shot.  BNSF brought all the locomotives up from Gibson yard because of flooding.  they had BNSF (Green and Orange, Blue and White, Red and Silver all represented) and a NS, plus 2 cabooses.

Sunday while at the Durham Museum I saw a long Manifest come over on the Union Pacific Bridge with some of that BNSF power, however now it had a UP and 2 CSX locomotives as well as the two Cabooses.

1.  When is the last time you saw a Caboose on a train let alone TWO!
Image

2.  This might be my favorite of the set
Image

3.  CSX Power on the BNSF
Image

4.  While that BNSF sat, two UP trains rolled by.  One stopped and one kept rolling, when the BNSF cleared, 3 Feromex Units were sitting there!
Image

5. BNSF Train backing down the hill to Gibson.
Image

6. Ferromex

7.  Quick shot from the bridge

I especially like that #11 shot, with all the switches making a really interesting pattern.

That makes sense, they shut down the line yesterday for Maintenance for several hours.  I heard those things put on quite the show at night.

Have they switched the tracks over to the new bridge yet?

I saw this being "towed" through Plattsmouth a few weeks ago.  Any one know how it got this way?

It rear-ended another train near Red Oak, Iowa doing about 40mph.  Both crew members in that train were killed.  I never hear a final outcome of the investigation.

1.  Next to the Burlington Station in Omaha, NE waiting for a light power move to clear so they could head over to Council Bluffs.

There was a Coal Train waiting for a local that was waiting on a light power move that was waiting on a Manifest that was waiting on another Manifest...

8/14/2011  Here are a few shots, one from Omaha the other Morning, the rest from a quick trip to Blair this afternoon.

1.  Omaha, NE Thursday Morning.
Image

2.  This was the shot I was after on Thursday, the old CNW car was a bonus!
Image

3.  From Blair today.  I love catching what remains of the CNW when I go up there

7.

8/29/2011  Catching up on photos again....  I always seem to be behind.

1.  Blue Hill, NE and the BNSF railroad.
Image

After that we went to Bladen, NE, however all the tracks are gone...:(  Also gone were some tracks that ran east from Blue hill.

2.  One quick shot of the family farm, I don't every remember the pond looking this good.  There is a Dam in the background from a larger pond.
Image

Ok back to Omaha...

3.  I arrived at the Amtrak Depot.  Wasn't long and the first train came down the hill.
Image

4.  That train stopped really fast, while it was sitting there, a BNSF transfer came up from the year.
Image

5. Same BNSF transfer
Image

6.  The transfer sat there forever!  The UP double stacked that stopped really fast finally got moving, watching it between 2 cars on the BNSF, we saw that the UP 1982 Heritage Unit was the DPU!!! The chase was on!  Here is the point of that train again with the UP1982 DPU.
Image

7.  UP 1982 as the DPU at Monument Lane in Council Bluffs.
Image

8.  Went back over to Omaha and found allan by complete accident sitting on the north side of the tracks.  Here comes another UP down the hill, BNSF still sitting on the tracks.
Image

9.  UP 3843 came blasting down the hill and scared a bunch of trespassers off.
Image

After that train, I had to go work for a bit.  I had a photo shoot way out in northwest Omaha...

10.  I was able to get back downtown for the UP Passenger Special to get back.
Image

11.
Image

12.
Image

13.  A Double Stack was right on its heals.
Image

14.  Finally another BNSF transfer pulls up the hill to clear the switch before it backs down to Gibson Yard
Image

10/3/2011  These were taken between 9/26 and 10/2.

First Off, here are a couple shots of the Pink Ribbon Locomotive on the UP Display Track in Downtown Omaha.
1.
Image

2.
Image

The next several are from 9/26.  After an Aerial Photo Shoot in Red Oak, IA, I took the slow way home and followed the Creston Sub.  However MOW had everything tied up so there were not many trains.  It would be a fun line to fan when there are some trains.
3.

4.

5.

6.  Finally found one with the sun on the wrong side...
Image

Then I headed up towards Crescent, IA where the roads are finally open!
7.  Near the Rock Quarry
Image

8. Monument Road
Image

Off to Downtown Omaha
9.  Nice to see this locomotive!
Image

10.  And again
Image

Then from Sunday:
11.  Made a quick stop at Oreapolis on my way home from NE City.
Image

Then I had to go to he||, opps, I mean the mall and get a shirt.  However I got that done quick and it was off for a sunday evening drive!

12.  I wasn't ready for this train to come around the corner so its not the best shot.
Image

13.  This one is a bit soft, but I still like it with the harvest in the background.

Yes, its called the 12th Street Line, it looks like heck, but its a critical part of UP operations over in CB.  All Council Bluffs to DesMoines Trains, CB to Proviso (Chicago), CB to Sioux City, and the reverse operations of those trains, Proviso to CB, DesMoines to CB, Sioux City to CB and a few others use it to access the main yard.

Yep, that's where I was standing when I caught this moment. My shots of 844 are fairly pedestrian and I'm not too proud of the results as it was right at noon and the lighting was completely miserable.

That being said, I do kind of like this one. Wish I'd have changed a few camera settings, but I didn't realize how contrasty it was since I really couldn't even see my display very well in the sunlight.

Do you have the option to see a histogram on you camera?  Its a lot easier to read in the bright sun that the actual photo on your LCD.

Yes I do, it's a Nikon D7000. What I don't have, though, is the discipline to actually check it when I'm in the moment. Duhrrrrrr...

Another photographer told me about using it when we were in a bright baseball stadium.  It works good.
