The last time the UFC came to Omaha (Fight Night), it was held at the Civic. Good size venue for that level of UFC card. Not PPV, but was on Spike TV.

This one is about the same, not PPV, but now on Fuel.

Ellenberger is from Omaha, so hopefully that means a good crowd. The Civic makes sense.

I do like watching UFC occasionally but I don't think I would ever go to a live event, "UFC guy" with their rhinestone shirts, fancily stitched pants, and roid rages are a little scary. Whenever I've gone to a bar to watch UFC there are always guys everywhere that look like they are just waiting for someone to look at them wrong.

The Civic was the perfect site for the Golden Gloves in Civic's Hay Day. Â My Father and Grand Father would take me to many fights there in the 70's. To see UFC use this venue for events is a perfect match. An old crusty auditorium is what a UFC fight needs. Just like Hockey. You want a place that has character. The smell of stagnant beer and cigars. Just like Sokal is the perfect venue for grunge/indie/punk. I know the Civic is hearing the death bells, but even though its age, it has had a rich history for Omaha sports - and music. I saw Muddy Waters warm up Eric Clapton there in '75. Memories....

Last time UFC was here I was octagon-side shooting the bouts. I can't say I'm a huge fan, just isn't my thing, however having seen it on tv before seeing it live I can say without a doubt it is night and day difference. Forget about the fans, the fights themselves are just on another level that doesn't translate to tv in the least.Linkin5 wrote:I do like watching UFC occasionally but I don't think I would ever go to a live event, "UFC guy" with their rhinestone shirts, fancily stitched pants, and roid rages are a little scary.

UFC hits it big with smaller card
The UFC's first foray on Fuel TV went well Wednesday, highlighted by a terrific main event between determined welterweights.
The Omaha, Neb., event was packaged much like last month's debut for the UFC on FX: a mix of young prospects, familiar names and a relevant, potentially exciting headliner.
Because of the close fight, Dana White says all main events will be five rounds from now on:In person, per ESPN's Brett Okamoto, the compacted feel of the crowd and venue was excellent. That passion of a smaller venue, drawn primarily to watch Ellenberger, one of Omaha's own, translated very well on television.
“We blew it.”
It was as simple as that according to UFC president Dana White, who said after an exciting three-round war between Jake Ellenberger and Diego Sanchez, that it should have been a five-round fight.
What resulted on Wednesday night between Jake Ellenberger and Diego Sanchez was a back-and-forth battle that could have absolutely gone on longer than the 15 minutes allotted. After Ellenberger took the first two rounds, Sanchez came storming back in the third, taking his opponent’s back and firing away with big shots trying to get the finish. The fight ended before Sanchez could put Ellenberger away, but there’s no denying the swing in momentum.
Unfortunately the end of the third round was also the end of the fight.
White now says after learning from this mistake that all future main events will be five rounds, regardless of being on FX, Fuel, Fox, or pay-per-view.

That last round was absolutely unreal. They were beating the |expletive| out of each other about 8ft in front of me and I could just hear the smacks and the grunts when Elenberger was pinned. Brutal. The Civic absolutely exploded when he got back up though in the last 10sec and started wailing on Sanchez. I agree, it should've gone longer than 3 rounds though. Funny thing, the ring girls had the "Round Four" placard ready to go next to me.
I have a few pics up over at the Civic's fb page:
