Apparently both UNO and the Lancers will play hockey outdoors at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha in 2013

This is still technically a rumor.  If you look at sources, 1 blog quotes another, which quotes mavpuck.com, which first discussed this several months ago, this is not new, nor is it actually news yet.  Nobody, UNO, MECA, UND, the Lancers has actually said yes to all of the details yet...

Playing a doubleheader and a game at night is a bad idea.  Remember, we're talking February.  We might get lucky, with weather like we've had lately.  Or it could be -10.

I would split the games up, play one on Saturday and one on Sunday so people have time to warm up between games.  Or better yet, two different weekends.  The real expense is installing the ice.  Then let local youth leagues and rec leagues play on the ice during the week.  I think you'ld keep the ice busy for a full week or more.

I think the night idea is a rough one as well.

With proper planning the double header works.  Have some massive tents outside for fans to go to and eat and warm up.  They did this at Arrowhead when NU played OU a few years ago and it was great.

Whenever they have it, I think hockey at TDAPO is a unique way to use the space. It will have the same problems and limitations as the Winter Classic did with sightlines and distance from the ice but I would definitely go just for the spectacle of it.

That's why you don't want to do it regularly.  But marketed right with a big crowd, it could be a lot of fun.

UNO exploring game at TD Park
Rob White WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:"(UNO coach) Dean (Blais) has mentioned outdoor hockey at TD Ameritrade, and certainly it's an opportunity for us," Alberts said. "Those are the sort of community assets that we have available that we'd like to take advantage of, and certainly it's our goal and aspiration, and we'd like someday for that to come to fruition."

I was just reading one of the articles about the 2013 USFS Championships.  They will have TWO extra sheets of Ice in the convention center!  Since they will already be here, they could set one up outside after the fact for the Outdoor Game!

$30 per ticket which will get you into both games (Stars vs. Lancers and UND vs. UNO)

Edit:  Looks like the OWH is reporting it now as well!

Last week during the presale, I guestimated that they had sold a couple thousand tickets, based on availability.

UNO had an e-mail issue and neglected to contact most of their season ticketholders about buying during the presale.  That kept numbers down.  I went down to the CenturyLink box office and purchased tickets at lunchtime Monday; they had the seating chart out front and center, so I figure others had been buying that morning.

Outdoor hockey rink construction begins next week

http://journalstar.com/sports/stars-hoc ... _form=true
BRENT C. WAGNER / Lincoln Journal Star wrote:More than 10,000 tickets have been sold, according to Omaha Sports Commission President Harold Cliff. The commission is helping stage the event in conjunction with UNO, the Lancers and Omaha's Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority. Seating capacity is about 23,000.

North Dakota is expected to bring more than 2,000 fans to see the Sioux play outdoors for the first time. North Dakota is currently ranked No. 5 in the country, while UNO is No. 13.

“We’re hoping something in the 15,000 (fans) range, maybe more, depending on the conditions,” Cliff said. “The long-range forecast is for it to be in the low 40s, which would be perfect. If it was like it was the last couple of days here,  that would have an impact on how many people want to sit outside. If it’s in the mid-40s, I think we’ll have a very strong walk-up crowd.”

This is stupid expensive

Post by swgiust »

Wanted to bring the family to this hockey game. Tickets are $ 90 each. WOW??
This aint the freakin' Rolling Stones.
Having tickets for both games was dumb. I am not going to sit outside, in Nebraska,
in February for 6+ hours.

The tickets are expensive, but $90 is the top end.

Last time I checked, there were $30 tickets available, and frankly, I think the 300 level seats will have better views than the grandstand seats.

We are and we're not spending $90 on the tickets either, that's the top price not the bottom......

Ice was being painted this morning...

http://huskermike.blogspot.com/2013/02/ ... being.html

The layout was probably intended to support a sellout crowd.  As it stands, they probably could have set it up along the first base line with this crowd.  That might have affected ticket prices slightly.  As I've noted before, the $30 tickets probably have better sightlines than some of the $90 tickets.

A shame all that snow melted this week. Would have looked awesome with the whole field covered. Just kinda looks stupid now.

I know at the Winter Classics they will bring in snow machines to cover the grass. At Wrigley the area around the stadium didn't have an inch of snow but the field at Wrigley was covered.

Apparently the Chicago Blackhawks have the same guy, James Cornelison, sing the National Anthem every single game.  I guess he is singing the National Anthem on Saturday at the outdoor game.  I am not sure how they are doing it, if they will do one anthem for the whole day or one for each game.

501 N. 13th Street, Omaha (Directly across from TD Ameritrade Park.)

• The official events for UND take place upstairs, but if we fill it up, they'll accommodate us downstiars too
• The Saturday (outdoor) game will be shown at the Old Mattress Factory on TV (big screen upstairs & other tvs too) for those who don't want to go to the game outside
• There will be a buffet both days for $12.00 (cash only)
• There will be a DJ after the game each night

I wonder why they put the ads on the ice facing the bleachers?  I doubt that people sitting the bleachers will be able to see them due to the low angle of those seats...
