Dirk does one thing well. Actually, very well. Award-winningly well. He's a great story teller. He's extremely talented at telling people's stories. Read his stuff about Sami Spencer, the UNO track star. Or the story about small town high school football. He just has a knack for those feature stories.Coyote wrote:I never read anything by Dirk. He is hated by Husker fan and bluejay fan alike. And Bo despises him, I am surprised he us still employed in the state.
Problem is he fancies himself as a guy who understands the actual sports. Or, even worse, he gets a spreadsheet and pretends to be Nate Silver and a real sabremetrician.
He wins awards for the former. He gets roasted for the later. I think the World-Herald gives him freedom to write whatever he wants because, even though his analysis is horrible, it's written in such a way that it generates clicks and discussion, and that still drives revenue to the W-H.
That being said, I've noticed that the World-Herald has phased him out of much of their gameday coverage. I assume that they want him to do more feature writing, and try to prevent more embarrassing debacles, like his column on Taylor Martinez a couple of years ago.
