Dirk does one thing well. Actually, very well. Award-winningly well. He's a great story teller. He's extremely talented at telling people's stories. Read his stuff about Sami Spencer, the UNO track star. Or the story about small town high school football. He just has a knack for those feature stories.

Problem is he fancies himself as a guy who understands the actual sports. Or, even worse, he gets a spreadsheet and pretends to be Nate Silver and a real sabremetrician.

He wins awards for the former. He gets roasted for the later. I think the World-Herald gives him freedom to write whatever he wants because, even though his analysis is horrible, it's written in such a way that it generates clicks and discussion, and that still drives revenue to the W-H.

That being said, I've noticed that the World-Herald has phased him out of much of their gameday coverage. I assume that they want him to do more feature writing, and try to prevent more embarrassing debacles, like his column on Taylor Martinez a couple of years ago.

Great win for the Big East. The conference is still undefeated outside of Marquette's two losses. Actually, in terms of winning %, the Big East is the highest in college basketball.

Big East improves to 37-2 in 2014-15 as Butler knocks off North Carolina
CBS Sports wrote:But it's not just the record that's impressive for the league so far; it's the teams that the conference has defeated to accumulate that record. Over the last two nights, Villanova beat VCU and Michigan on a neutral floor in New York. Creighton beat chic preseason Final Four contender Oklahoma at home. Providence beat Florida State and Notre Dame at the Hall of Fame Tip-Off. Xavier has soundly beaten solid mid-majors Stephen F. Austin, Murray State and Long Beach State. Even Seton Hall won its early-season event, the Paradise Jam tournament in the Virgin Islands.

Well St. Johns beat Minnesota and Georgetown beat #18 Florida, but DePaul lost by 12 to Lehigh. Still a pretty good day for the conference when you beat two top 20 teams and go 3-1.

Forget Kentucky: The Big East is the Story of College Basketball
New York Post wrote:Forget top-ranked Kentucky and its platoon system. The Big East has been the story of the early season, carrying a stunning 41-5 record into Black Friday. The basketball-centric league, with just one preseason nationally ranked team — Villanova — already has defeated five ranked opponents, three more than any other league.

Volleyball To Tangle With Seton Hall For BIG EAST Tourney Crown
Go Creighton wrote:Creighton is playing in its fourth conference tournament final in the last five seasons. The Bluejays lost to Northern Iowa in 2010 (3-1), defeated Wichita State in 2012 (3-0) and lost to Marquette last year (3-1). All three of the previous teams to reach the tournament final would also reach the NCAA Tournament.

A win on Saturday would be Creighton’s first BIG EAST Tournament title in any sport. Now in their second year in the BIG EAST, the past 13 months have seen the Bluejays reach the title game in volleyball (losing to Marquette), men’s basketball (Providence) and baseball (Xavier), only to come up empty each time. During Creighton’s final 20 years in the Missouri Valley Conference, Creighton won 36 league tournament titles.

Wow, lets hope the conference keeps rolling. At least they don't have to play the Bracketbuster tournament that the Valley did.

Wow, that is ugly. I have played many games where emotions get high, but you just forget about it and move on. Thankfully it sounds like both men are doing that. Of course, Gibbs will be doing it from the bench.

I like his response though:
Man that's not who I am. I'm sorry to my family, friends, fans, and team for being an embarrassment. Even more sorry to @RyArch15 .. I let My emotions get the best of me and that wasn't acceptable at all. I hope you're alright and I will face any consequences coming.
The young man at least seems sincere in his apology.

Another thing that makes this seem sincere is that it was out before the game was over or right after. There wasn't a lot of time to go into crafting a response in a conf room and then getting it out there. it seems to me too to be genuine. I appreciate the response from the guy that took the hit too that did not escalate the situation.

Coyote wrote:Big East turmoil could trickle down to SLU
STLToday wrote:The seven non-football playing members of the Big East met on Sunday to talk about their future, a future that could possibly include SLU.

The teams could potentially break away, leaving the football teams in some sort of weird hodgepodge while the seven basketball schools – DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall and Villanova – revert to the league's roots.

If the Big East is going to add teams, the A-10 has the best candidates. Xavier would be atop the list, but Dayton, SLU and Butler would be close behind. Butler isn't Catholic, but is private and has more in common with the other teams than, say, public VCU, with an enrollment over 20,000. Creighton, in the Missouri Valley, would also be a candidate.
