2014 Omaha Storm Chasers

Post by nebugeater »

Thought I would start a 2014 thread with this news

The Chasers will start the 2014 season with a new Manager for the first time in 11 seasons.  Mike Jirschele has been promoted to the staff in Kansas City.

http://www.omaha.com/article/20131025/S ... city-staff
Mike Jirschele's long road to the major leagues is finally complete.

Jirschele, Omaha's manager for 14 seasons – including the last 11 consecutively – was added to the Kansas City Royals' coaching staff on Friday, completing his 37-season odyssey through the minor leagues that began as an 18-year-old draft pick.

“It's an exciting time for me, but I'm more excited for my family than myself,” Jirschele said. “It was a long road for them. I missed a lot of time with my kids growing up, and my wife had a lot of hard summers with the kids by herself while I was playing. They had a lot rougher road than I did.”

Met him once when I was interning for the Omaha Chamber of Commerce.  He was a very nice guy who knows what he is doing, and has a passion for it at the same time.

They said this wasn't fixed as of yet, so their will be some fluidity to the roster...

Too bad to see Duffy back in Omaha. Looking like he won't live up to expectations of a few years ago.

Tommy John surgery set him back, but Yordano Ventura's 100 mph fast ball sent him down.

They are doing an open house/practice on Wednesday from 11-2.

Too soon to give up on Duffy. He did not have the best control pre surgery, going to take him a bit of time to get where he needs to be. Smart move to have him start the year in Omaha. I'd be willing to bet he's in KC by the All Star break.

26 Of The Most Ridiculous Minor League Baseball Logos You’ll Ever See

1. Montgomery Biscuits
We know the South loves their breakfast, but come on.

2. Normal CornBelters
Something just isn’t “normal” about a stoned ear of corn.

3. Modesto Nuts
Something tells us there’s probably a lot of sexual innuendos being thrown around on a Saturday night at the ballpark.

4. Jamestown Jammers
What were the people in Jamestown thinking?

5. Savannah Sand Gnats
The logo might be a joke, but the terrifyingly real blood-suckers aren’t.

6. Everett Aquasox
What the deuce is an “aqua sock?”

7. Cedar Rapids Kernels
Mr. Kernel looks like he’s been hanging out in Normal too long.

8. El Paso Chihuahuas
Someone didn’t get their taco this afternoon.

9. Erie SeaWolves
Erie shows the result of what happens when you dress a creepy pirate up as a dog.

10. Kannapolis Intimidators
The most intimidating letter “K” you’ll ever see.

11. Brevard County Manatees
Besides being one of the least intimidating mascots in the minors, the Manatees boast an impressive cast of past players.

12. Albuquerque Isotopes
I guess Homer’s “hunger strike” to keep the team in Springfield didn’t work out.

13. Augusta Green Jackets
Arnold Palmers. All day, every day.

14. Auburn Doubledays
Because only mustached men are that casual with a fastball zooming at their face.

15. Richmond Flying Squirrels
Being classified as a “Flying Squirrel” before repping the Giants uniform seems like a form of hazing.

16. Aberdeen Ironbirds
The happiest damn plane you ever will see.

17. Fort Wayne TinCaps
An obvious nod to Johnny Appleseed, but come on…the “TinCaps!?”

18. Toledo MudHens
Not as bad as the Walleye, but come on, Toledo.

19. Eugene Emeralds
“Eugene is a hotbed of countercultural ideas,” said Brandiose’s Jason Klein. “From Sasquatch sightings to hippy culture, the Ems are honoring Eugene’s eccentricities with a few of their own.” - Emerald’s Official Website
Oh, okay…

20. Charlotte Stone Crabs
Such an oddly specific name, but Stoney the Stone Crab reps the team well.

21. Omaha Storm Chasers
Twister is no joke…or is it?

22. Bowling Green Hot Rods
Cool beans, Bowling Green.

23. Hickory Crawdads
For every child who grew up catching crawdads in the creek behind the house.

24. New Orleans Zephyrs
Not sure what a beaver has to do with a zephyr, but alright New Orleans!

25. Lehigh Valley IronPigs
Mascots, Ferrous and FeFe, represent the team by wearing #26, the atomic number for Iron, on their jerseys. Science rules.

26. Lansing Lugnuts
Lansing got screwed.

I feel bad for the Chasers, it seems like this happens every year for the openers. I know weather in April can unpredictable but it just seems that there is a wet cold spell every year for the opener. At least the weather this weekend should cooperate fairly nicely.

Not sure why they just don't send teams in this region south or west for the first week of April. Nothing wrong with Opening Day on the 10th or so for Omaha. Give us a little extra time to get winter out of the way.

I'm going early to make sure I get one of the flags. They look pretty nice. Nice to see the sun out for todays game.

If you see a guy in a Royals blue hooded sweatshirt with silver hair that's me.

Giavotella, who was held out of yesterday's game, was called up today and should be playing for KC today.

And they did it with an extra 4000 school aged kids in attendance!

I was out there for a little bit. It was a beautiful day for a game. Wind was blowing out at 15-20 mph, but it wasn't a cold wind.
