Creighton Basketball 2014-2015

Post by Coyote »

Well, CU is now 0-8 in the round of 32 and now a year into the Big East, I hope McDermott can change his game plan to answer accordingly. I think Doug gave us great national exposure in the recruiting process, but CU needs to move away from being an inside-outside team (which doesn't work against a good zone as we have seen against Baylor and Providence).

So what is in store for 2014-2015?

G Devin Brooks 6-2
G Isaiah Zierden 6-2
G Austin Chatman 6-0
G Avery Dingman 6-6
F Toby Hegner 6-9
F Leon Gilmore 6-7
F Zac Hansen 6-9
F Ronnie Harrell 6-7
C Will Artino 6-11

Doesn't appear that Creighton adds any length in the paint with that roster.

Lots of names... But who is going to get playing time, how deep will we go. I was looking at starters, not a whole roster. What style of play will we be looking at?

I honestly do not know what to make of that roster. Looks like an outside-in, rely on the 3 setup next season. I do like Hansen, though, but still, He couldn't rebound or shoot over Baylor.

After skimming through that list, leaves me really wishing Groselle were athletic. He's a big boy.

Hansen going up alone against a 7-1 Isaiah Austin? Don't need to flip a coin on that one.

Based on that roster, it appears Leon Gilmore and Hanson would be the only guys capable of any inside presence on a consistent basis. Artino can do some damage down low even now and then but not often. Who knows though. The roster could and probably will change before next season. There are always guys transferring (last year Nevin Johnson and Andre Yates) Maybe Creighton might even be able to still pick up one of the new Marquette transfers since Buzz Williams left.

I think I heard Creighton has two spots available for transfers. If so, it will be very interesting to see what kind of player they will go after.

Speaking of Marquette's Buzz Williams leaving for VTech, rumor has it that they are going after VCU's Shaka Smart, former UCLA coach Ben Howland or maybe even K State coach Bruce Weber. I hope they can get Smart!

Ronnie Harrell: http://espn.go.com/college-sports/baske ... ie-harrell" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Leon Gilmore: http://espn.go.com/college-sports/baske ... on-gilmore" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's hard to put much stock into freshmen, but I'm hoping these two guys will be able to contribute next year. Both appear to have the ability to drive and create their own shot.

I agree, but look at the Kentucky plan. Put potentially talented freshman at work from the beginning, by the time the tournaments come around, you hope they can lead the team, and beat a WSU...

I'd take a team of fast shooters who can create shots (what we may have coming in with the redshirts and two new guys) who may miss some shots over the slow shooters (minus Doug of course... And Brooks who is a trainwreck) anyday.

As far as "length", what's the fascination with this lately? Why is every team seemingly "long"? Is there some deep seeded fetishism going on? It's a buzz word. Good teams come in all varieties, but speed kills.

Thing is there isn't a lot of starter playing time on that list -- who knows who will shine since now the 4 seniors are gone.

Tennessee men's basketball coach Cuonzo Martin met with Marquette officials on Sunday to discuss the school's coaching vacancy, according to an ESPN report published early Monday morning.
Duke assistant coach Steve Wojciechowski has emerged as a target for Marquette University in its search for a basketball coach, sources told Yahoo Sports.

Another great recruit signing with the Jays:
Chance to play in Big East helps point guard Watson pick Creighton
Maurice Watson didn’t know what to expect when he stepped off a plane Saturday in Omaha for his recruiting visit to Creighton.

Turns out there was little that Watson didn’t like about the visit, prompting him to accept Creighton’s scholarship offer Sunday afternoon and end his search for a school after playing two seasons at Boston University.

A Philadelphia native, Watson scored 800 points and had 410 assists in starting 63 of 65 games the past two seasons at Boston U. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Watson ranked third nationally this season in total assists (248) and assists per game (7.1).

He will have to sit out next season and have two years of eligibility remaining. Both of CU’s returning point guards, Austin Chatman and Devin Brooks, are seniors next season.

“When I got off the plane, I didn’t know it was going to be like it is,” Watson said. “I fell in love with the campus and the program. It’s going to take some adjusting but there are adjustments anywhere you go.

“I might be an East Coast guy, but I think I’m going to fit in well there.”

Big get considering the top two PGs are gone after this next season. Also important to start making inroads to the East Coast.

I hope this is the beginning of a pipeline between Philly/New York recruits. I was listening to 1620 a few days ago when they were talking about (5'9") Watson. In the past, area recruits liked CU, but they were in the MVC. Now being in the BEast, that last impediment to saying yes is gone. If Fox Sports keeps growing, and more TVs in those markets tune in....

Two top 150 players coming in this coming year, and one top 100 player coming in the year after. I was told that Creighton couldn't hope to recruit with the big boys of the Big East.

I just worry one thing...

Is he "long and athletic" enough?

That would be a stupid move right now for Creighton. Absolutely nothing to gain and everything to lose.

That said, a few years down the road, it could be interesting.

Oklahoma basketball: Cheers for Creighton, but where's Wichita State
Berry Tramel: News OK wrote:I applaud the Sooners for playing Creighton. That will be a great series. But it’s likely that game exists only because Creighton is now in the Big East and has shed its mid-major status. Alas, that tag seems to be keeping the Shockers from getting to play the games that would get Oklahomans excited about basketball.

Field looks to be ok. Definitely the highlight would be Cincy. Just wish we could get another Big 10 school in the tournament.

On most normal years, I'd say it looks to be Creighton and Cincy in the finals. Next year, looks to be Cincy and... anyone else.

Would also love to see CU bring back Wichita State to the schedule. Would be a blast to see those to play in KC at the Sprint Center.

This actually works well for Creighton, their recruiting season was just extended a few more weeks. I hope they can fill this spot with another top 100 player. I don't think Harris would get much playing time in the next few years, so it is better for him to find a place where he can get more playing time.
