Doug McDermott in the NBA

Post by Coyote »

I guess it is now time to follow his pro career. I just read one of SB Nations 2014 NBA Mock Drafts, and they have him going at #13 to the Timberwolves. That would suck. NBA Draft.net has him at #10 going to Denver. CBS has him going to #9 Cleveland, #12 Orlando, and #14 Phoenix... Looks like he will be a lottery pick.

Maybe we would get lucky and the Bulls will trade up to draft him...they need a shooter.

Per Kevin Kugler there is a Creighton sponsored billboard in North Dallas congratulating Doug McDermott for winning the Player of the Year award!

So great to see that he officially won the award. Can't believe that one voter didn't vote for him...if you look at the whole regular season, there wasn't another player in the country that came close to producing as consistently as he did.

I did not expect Russ Smith to win the Associated Press national college player of the year award Thursday.

I also did not expect to be the only one of 65 AP voters who picked Smith instead of Creighton forward Doug McDermott.

But that's what happened.

And I'm fine with it. I understand why McDermott won. I don't understand why Smith, the Louisville senior, only earned one vote -- mine. Or why Shabazz Napier of Connecticut did not earn any.

You didn't have to watch either Smith or Napier play as many times as I did to understand this was hardly the year for a unanimous call.
Goes on to argue that CU was hardly on national TV, admits to only watching McDermott play three times and and questions if Doug's popularity gained from him being white.

Wow, just read it. The mention of anything to do with race is completely ignorant. Russ Smith is a good player but McDermott was the most consistent player in college basketball, hence the other 64 votes.

What a |expletive| idiot. As if his claims about Creighton not appearing on national TV often (which is bullsh*t, every single regular and post-season game was televised) wasn't bad enough, he goes and cites race as a reason for Doug's popularity.

That guy should be stripped of his rights to freedom of speech.

The author pretty much gets blasted in the comments.

He even says:
He became an all-around player, the fifth all-time leading scorer at Louisville.
Doesn't even mention that McDermott is the fifth all-time scorer in NCAA history.

Fifth all-time scorer in NCAA history > Fifth all-time leading scorer at Louisville

Blakely's NBA mock draft 3.0: Embiid in green

10. Philadelphia (via New Orleans): Doug McDermott, F, Creighton (+) — Strong showing at pre-draft combine should solidify his lottery pick (top-14) status.

Hope that doesn't hurt his draft stock since he was already considered undersized at 6'8.

I don't think Doug will drop all the way to the Spurs, but maybe his height issue will help him not go to lottery school and fall far enough to a team that has playoff hopes. I didn't know the Bluejays were such Spur fans though...
SI.com: Is there a team that runs a system that you think you would be a good fit in?

McDermott: "I like to play up and down. I'd say the Spurs -- that's who everyone on Creighton dreams of playing for. They have great ball movement. They don't care about who is scoring. We liked watching the Spurs back in Omaha. A lot of teams are moving in that direction. The Hawks, the Suns -- a lot of shooters that like to space the floor.

That measurement surprised me as he didnt seem the type to bother exaggerating that much. He's going to have to have a little quick in him. If he's at least as quick as JJ Redick maybe he will survive. At that size he may not even get the big forward but the small one or even a big guard. Will be interesting to see. D isnt a premium in the league for a lot of guys, so, as long as he hits shots consistently...

I am still hoping that he goes to the Bulls. It looks like they have the 16th and 19th picks, so it is possible. I know that the article in the paper stated that he has talked to a bunch of the Bulls front office. I think he would be a great fit for the Bulls, they need a good shooter (that was evident in the playoffs this year)

I'd like to see Doug go to Golden State. I am interested on seeing what Steve Kerr will do there.

Lottery is tonight, and ESPN's Jay Bilas still has Doug as the #7 top pick.

2014 NBA mock draft: Cavaliers should go big at No. 1 with Joel Embiid
16. Chicago Bulls (from Hornets): Doug McDermott, F, Creighton

The Bulls seem to be constantly searching for more offensive weapons to augment a defense that is perennially one of the league's best. Specifically, Chicago needs shooters after finishing with the fifth lowest amount of made three-pointers per game last season.

All Creighton's Doug McDermott did was finish his career as the NCAA's fifth all-time leading scorer. He's also arguably the best perimeter shooter in the draft after hitting over 44 percent of his three-pointers the last three seasons with the Bluejays. No one is sure how McDermott is going to defend NBA small forwards, but if anyone can figure that out, it's Tom Thibodeau.

With one week left before the draft, pundits have Doug going to Charlotte, unless the Lakers or (God forbid) Sacramento takes him first. Speaking of first, the 7 ft Kansas center has foot problems and he may drop like a stone from Cleveland's pick.

And now for a little entertainment:
