Any idea why attendance is down so much this CWS?
Re: 2014 CWS
Kind of crazy, heard 13k down on 1620. They listed many reasons, US World Cup last night, threat of severe weather on a couple days, and lack of marquee teams.

-Because the stadium is 3 inches too far to the left, and put at a 56 degree angle instead of a 54 degree angle and it's making no more home runs. Everyone needs home runs
-Because the elderly/middle aged/Rosenblatt forever crowd misses Rosenblatt too much, and is now refusing to go, or got lost on the way there and went to the old Rosenblatt site instead.
-Because the dudebros in the outfield with their dudebro girlfriends are now watching it all on their smart phones from their homes...or were paying too much attention to their smartphones and got lost and are now at the old Rosenblatt site.
Or it could just be a lull before it picks up in the later rounds

Re: 2014 CWS
I'm rooting for Virginia 'cuz I've lived here for so long. Was at a sports bar Sunday and I had to ask the bartender to put the CWS on one of the TVs. It's all about the World Cup here. I even work with a few people who are taking vacation days to host/attend World Cup parties. You'd think Virginians would at least be passably interested in how the Cavaliers are doing. Go figure. I also think the NBA finals played a part.lmdramos wrote:Any idea why attendance is down so much this CWS?

Ole Miss-Virginia game postponed till 2pm tomorrow which is suppose to be the start time of Texas-Vanderbilt game. So I'm not really sure what they are doing.

Nice! I love when teams who have never won before make it to the championship. And this year both teams are.Coyote wrote:Virginia vs Vandy for a first time winner!

Home runs in college baseball are way, way down from past years.
‘‘In 2010, there was just under one home run per game in Division I,’’ Sports Illustrated wrote in this week’s issue. ‘‘Last season there were .36 home runs per game.’’
There were only three homers hit in 14 games at the College World Series last year. But in 1998, when metal bats were at their peak, before they were ratcheted down to more resemble wooden bats in 2011, there were 62 home runs hit in the same amount of games.
In this year’s College World Series, it took 115 innings of total play and 3,400 pitches before the first home run was hit. That one came off the bat of Texas shortstop C.J. Hinojosa, and it was the winning, and only, run in a 1-0 victory over UC-Irvine. ‘‘Four players fainted,’’ Texas coach Augie Garrido said afterward. A joke.
So what happened to all the dingers? New bats, new balls, and — for the College World Series — maybe the design of the stadium in downtown Omaha, some folks say.
But if the heyday of the long ball was 1998 for college baseball, I’m thinking of something else that sort of peaked right around then before heading downward. Stuff associated with monster major-league baseball sluggers like Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro.
Uh, steroids.

The attendance so far this year is 329,396 for 15 games, 21,960 avg. Although the avg is down, this is going to be a new all-time high for overall attendance (16 games played) after tonight. Looking to break the 350,000 barrier for the first time.

The 2011 CWS, the first played at TD Ameritrade Park, consisted of 14 sessions with a total attendance of 321,684 for an average session attendance of 22,977. The 2011 total was both the highest since 2005 and 2,294 spectators more than the 2010 per-game average of 20,683.[16][17]
The 2013 CWS, also consisted of 14 sessions with a total attendance of 341,483 for an average session attendance of 24,392 (both all-time highs for the CWS).

You guys rock.
So this year's average attendance isn't too astronomically worse than past years.

Correct
They just got tired of talking about the lack of home runs and had to find a new topic to create stir.

Also, they were talking about how UT and Ole Miss had mega reporters there, but when they were bounced the media room was full of crickets. Vanderbilt (Nashville) didn't even send reporters till just the other day...

Re: 2014 CWS
They finished down about 2500 per session, roughly 10%. Not huge but it is something you don't want to see continue. I did see someone post on eomaha's facebook page last night a crowd shot that showed a lot of empty seats. The final game in a best of 3 is a tough sell.nebugeater wrote:MadMartin8 wrote:You guys rock.

Re: 2014 CWS
The attendance was down about 10% from last year (last year was the largest attendance all-time though). This years attendance was comparable to 2012 and it was better than 2010 (the last year at Rosenblatt).Greg S wrote:They finished down about 2500 per session, roughly 10%. Definitely don't want to see that trend continue, but I think it was ok this year. With the world cup going on and the lack of some of the big name teams (outside of texas of course), I think the attendance was good. Still the largest overall attendance of all-time.

Re: 2014 CWS
Looks like the final attendance was a record 347,740. Thats an avg of 21,734 per game. Still not bad for a "down" year.

Omaha got some great exposure this year.

http://espnmediazone.com/us/press-relea ... ince-2011/
ESPN’s telecast of the third, and deciding game, of the College World Series Finals – Vanderbilt defeating Virginia 3-2 – averaged a 1.6 US HH rating and 2,388,000 viewers, making it the highest-rated and most-viewed College World Series game since 2009 when ESPN averaged a 1.7 US HH rating and 2,500,000 viewers for Game 1 of the CWS Finals.
In addition, ESPN’s 1.6 US HH rating for the final game of the college baseball season ranks as the third highest-rated baseball game – professional and college – across all cable and broadcast networks behind two of ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball matchups.
