Yes. It went before the Planning Board today, and they have had plans in the books to renovate the building for offices and locker rooms for several days now, I just didn't know if it was for ice also until today.

They've been working on this being an ice rink for several months now. They've been doing quite a bit of interior work already.

The developer, John Skradski, is in the air conditioning and heating business, so he knows what it takes to put up a sheet of ice, and he plays in an adult hockey league, so he know the need for ice time not only for hockey but ice skating and from what he said... Curling.

Yeah he's a good guy. He's played in both the MCHL and BPHL (where I play). He also had a son play on a team in Omaha Hockey Club that my friend coaches. It will be well thought out on the amenities from a skater's perspective. Great addition for Omaha.

Got to skate here on Tuesday. Will be great addition to the local scene. They are hosting some of the ice hockey games for the Cornhuskers/National Games. All of the hockey games are at the various Omaha facilities.

So, where are the best ice arenas in the Metro and where would you place this?
Will it be called Grover St., or are they going to name it after someone?

Official name is Grover Ice Arena. As far as ice goes, best is Motto/Hitchcock. Bottom is probably Tranquility (though better than it used to be). In the middle is Freemont and Ralston (also improved). Grover will be better to judge after they've been open awhile. For this early though was surprised how good it was.

Very interesting set up. Creative with the space. The seating watching area is behind one goal and is double decker. The benches are on one side, and there is only enough room to stand on the other. They are still working on the public areas and locker rooms but are close to finishing.

Overall, a great addition for Omaha hockey and skating. As noted in the multi purpose sports thread, Omaha was behind in this area, with Grover Ice and the community rink that is going up with Baxter Arena, Omaha is making up ground.

Glad it only hit the floor, and there was some warning with the leak before things were saturated and the weight took it down.

Ceiling of Omaha ice rink collapses during children's hockey practice
A parent credited the coaches' quick actions with saving the kids' lives.

The ceiling of Grover Ice Rink in Omaha collapsed Monday night during a children's hockey practice. Douglas County officials say a water pipe burst just before 6:30 p.m. at the rink on Grover Street near S. 60th Street. A parent says 5-year-old and 6-year-old players with the Omaha Hockey Club were practicing at the time. She says water began streaming from the ceiling, alerting coaches that something was wrong. The coaches removed the kids from the ice, and that's when the ceiling collapsed.

Ceiling collapses at Grover Ice Rink

A scary moment at a metro ice rink after a pipe burst in the arena, causing the ceiling to collapse. It happened at the Grover Ice Rink near 60th and Grover. A group of youth hockey players was practicing when staff noticed a leak in the ceiling. Everyone was immediately taken off the ice. The ceiling caved in just minutes later. Staff tells 6 News a pipe connected to the building’s sprinkler system burst, causing hundreds of gallons of water to fall onto the ice. The general manager tells us they expect the rink to be repaired and back open to the public in the coming days. No one was injured.

Yeah, it happened fast. I've been around 2 different sprinkler breaks in the past year, this one and one at work, Its amazing how much water comes out of a broken sprinkler pipe!

I stopped by there yesterday to get a couple pairs of skates sharpened. It's amazing how well they did. You can't tell by looking at it, there ever was an issue.

Sounds like they upgraded on how it's supported to.

Was impressed with the speed of the repairs considering the floor under what they were working was literally a sheet of ice.

This Week in NCHC Hockey: Omaha’s Miller called ‘a great person’ jumping into action at youth practice after roof collapses

Matthew Semisch, USCHO wrote:On Jan. 30, Omaha junior forward Matt Miller wasn’t just looking out for his own safety, but for that of around 50 five- and six-year-olds.

Since last summer, Miller has been involved with hockey training programs headed by UNO alums Billy Pugliese and Matt Smith. Every Monday and Tuesday this season, Miller joins Smith and several other coaches and volunteers to help put on initiation program practices at Grover Ice Rink, a privately-owned facility one mile south of UNO’s Baxter Arena.
