It has been 50 years since an Omaha boxer qualified for the Olympics, and 78 years since a local fighter has actually competed there. Steven Nelson is pursing a path to change that.

The Omaha native, who has claimed four major national amateur tournament titles in the past two years, won the 178-pound division at the WSB and World Championships team trial in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to earn an automatic berth to the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Nelson also won a chance to qualify for the AIBA 2015 World Championships through the continental championships and the right to compete in the World Series of Boxing.

Olympic nominations can be earned through performances in both events.

To chase his Olympic dream, Nelson recently had to make the tough decision to leave the Army’s World-Class Athlete Program he was training with. The Omahan had won titles at the 2013 National Golden Gloves and U.S. Championships and 2014 Ringside and Police Athletic League tournaments while fighting for his military team.
He also has an indiegogo live to help fund his training.
