UNO won the Alaska Gold Rush tournament this weekend.

Friday night was a 3-1 win. Saturday was a 4-3 overtime win with yet another game winning goal by Austin Ortgea. He is now only 2 game winning goals away from tying the NCAA Record.

The game ended around 1am Omaha time so I didn't keep the radio on to hear if there was any post game interviews, but I am sure everyone was excited to win the tournament and start the regular season off on a positive note.

A little more on UNO's Sweep this weekend, first non-Alaskan team to win the tournament!
Omaha.com wrote:UNO became the first non-Alaska team to claim the Goal Rush title in the nine-year history of the event.

"We're the only team to take a trophy out of Alaska," Blais said. "And it's a nice one."

Hopefully the first of many home sweeps in 2017! They really need to rule their own barn!

Big weekend coming up with North Dakota (and their fans) coming to town. #8 vs #18 according to the USCHO rankings. Should be fun.

Tickets are few and far between. Ticket express only shows 2 tickets available at $49 each, Stubhub shows 10 tickets left, all between $40 and $60.

UND 9 UNO 1 Final

This match looked just like the UMD match up. UND and UMD looked like Ivan Drago while UNO looked like slugs. Not sure what to think about this.

UND came out fast and strong from the get go. They were in total control of their offense, perfecting their lines with simple schemes. It was like the old Soviet machine against college kids. UNO needs to play a lot tougher tomorrow.

You can't get more 1980's than Rocky IV. Talk about Cold War jingoism and overuse of synthesizers! Also, not just one, but TWO training montages!

Maybe they need Rocky Balboa as a strength and conditioning coach. Or they all need to go to the frozen tundra of Russia to train.

Bad bad weekend for UNO hockey. They came out flat and uninspired Friday. Saturday much better effort and still got beat pretty bad. The gap between UND and UNO this weekend looked huge, and this year's UND team isn't at the level of their team a year ago that won the national title.

Omaha took it in the shorts again. Seemed like the RedHawks spent a lot of time in the offensive zone and took better shots at goal. Well, of course they did, they won. One Omaha power play didn't produce even one shot on goal. I am guessing Blais retires this year.

That was their fourth power play, while they were still down 2-3. Frustrating. They did score on their next PP, but going into 2ot 4 on 3 they seemed not to be able to figure anything out.

Tough finish to the season coming up. We'll see what the Mavs have in their tank.

Last night started out good, UNO was up 2-0 after 1. Then during the second period they gave up 4, including 3 goals in a 2 min stretch. UNO ended up falling to Denver 3-5. The little bit I saw on TV, they were looking good, but it was still 2-0 at that point so I'm not sure what happened.

I agree. Lately they've been downsizing coaching salaries and going with cheaper in house candidates. I'm afraid this will happen again with hockey. Hockey is their marquee sport, like NU football and CU basketball. This is the one sport UNO can not shop on the end caps for good deals. Need to spend to get the right person.
