College basketball rankings: Creighton beats UCLA, surges into the Top 25 (and 1)
Big East coaches last month picked Creighton to finish fifth in the league behind Villanova, Seton Hall, Xavier and Providence. Seemed reasonable at the time. And, ultimately, that projection might prove to be exactly right. But there's no denying the Bluejays have been surprisingly impressive relative to preseason expectations so far.
They're 4-0.
But their 4-0 record is not an empty 4-0 like so many other undefeated records across the nation. Creighton is 4-0 with a 92-88 road win over the Northwestern team that was ranked 19th in the preseason AP poll and a 100-89 neutral-court win over the UCLA team that was ranked 21st in the preseason AP poll. No other school already has multiple victories over preseason Top 25 teams. And that's why Creighton is now ranked 24th in the updated CBS Sports Top 25 (and one).
Creighton's next game is Tuesday night vs. Baylor.
So the Bluejays could theoretically wake up Wednesday with a 5-0 record featuring three wins over schools that were ranked in the preseason AP poll considering Baylor was 24th in the preseason AP poll. Scott Drew's Bears are 4-0 and ranked 16th in the current Top 25 (and one) after Monday's 70-65 win over Wisconsin.

Kind of crazy to think about, but could you imagine if Doug was surrounded by this supporting cast?

Paul Silas (CU '64) was inducted into the Collegiate Basketball HOF during this tournament.
He was one of only five men in NCAA history to average 20 points and 20 rebounds in his career.
And had I believe had 9 games with 30+ rebounds. It took 53 years, but he finally got his due.

Creighton will be fine. Really like this team. Baylor is and will be the worst matchup for CU as long as this program is in place. Their length and pace is the worst combo for who they recruit. And that's ok. Creighton creates problems for other programs. Still like this team a lot.

Can't fault Creighton in this one. They simply went ice cold from all over the floor. They were taking good shots too. I guess it'd be nice if they buried teams when they have the opportunity. When Jays get up 10 or 11, they get sloppy instead of stretching the lead to 15 or more.

The consequence from Creighton's offense is it wears down their legs, typically once they get deep into conference season. It's why they tend to struggle offensively in tournaments. But their shots didn't seem short tonight so I'm not sure they had tired legs. I guess they just let a win slip away.

Honestly, it wasn't like Baylor was even holding back the Jays, the Jays just missed a whole lot of gimmie shots. These games sometimes happen, I am just glad it happened against a ranked team.

Have to bounce back the rest of the Non Con and not let any weak games slip through. Plus, keeping it close at Gonzaga would be good (winning of course even better, but that's a tall order).

The Jays play very good defense..which should keep them in most games, home and away, in the Big East..

They just couldn’t throw it into the ocean in the 2nd half vs Baylor..

I, too, like the looks of this team. Let’s hope this year they develop the mental toughness to go along with their obvious on court talent. If that happens, this could be the special year (think Sweet 16) we’ve all been waiting for...

If they went ice cold shooting and you can't fault Creighton then who can you fault?

I agree, this team is easy to like. I really feel like their defensive intensity was great in the first half last night. They forced a few shot clock violations and were forcing Baylor to turn the ball over. The Jays were getting good looks in the 2nd half but just couldn't connect.

Saturday's game should be a blowout, then hoping the guys get well rested for next Friday's game @ Zaga.

One other quick note, hopefully the attendance on Saturday is better than the last home game vs Alcorn St. The attendance for that Sunday evening game (14,730) was the lowest since 11/13/11 vs Chicago St. (13,908)

Did somebody in KC tighten up the rims at half? Otherwise nobody. Jays had a good game plan for the zone and executed it well. Defense and rebounding were excellent. Foster even got in on the effort. Sometimes shots just don't fall.

Butler just gave the Bid East another good non-Conf win, coming back from down 15 with 5 min to play to beat Ohio St 67-66 in OT.
Meanwhile Gonzaga took out Texas 76-71 in OT.

Creighton ranked #25 this week. Now have been ranked 6 of the last 7 seasons at some point.

Next game is at #15 Gonzaga Friday. Chance to make a big statement.

I like the coaches poll better :D
4 Big East teams in the top 25 and Provibence and Butler receiving votes

BTW - Arizona became the first school (?) to go from #2 to unranked in consecutive polls...

I was hopeful, after the Jays performance the past 4 games, they’d be rewarded with a top 25 ranking :thumb: ..

If CU pulls off the win at Gonzaga Friday, we’ll see them crack the top 15...

I think you meant Baylor, not Butler. :)

And I wish Creighton would have had the same outcome. Judging by the first half alone, Creighton was well on their way until they couldn't hit any shots.

Creighton 44
Gonzaga 37

Great first half by Creighton who never trailed.
Creighton's cuts and passes were a gem!
They look in control of this game, hopefully they have a strong second half.

Not sure what's going on the the second half of these games, they just mysteriously go cold. Too tired from running in the first half?

By half time Gonzaga was in real danger of letting the game get away from them and they knew it. Gonzaga was able to regroup and come out in the second half and step their game up. Not only was Creighton unable to step their game up to Gonzaga's new level they then quickly folded. Gonzaga does not look like the 15th best team in the country at all. It seemed like it was falling apart so fast in the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half that McDermott should of used a couple of time outs and tried to decelerate the Creighton meltdown but he just sat there and let it happen.

Crappy half shooting by Creighton. Missing open looks and playing sloppy, terrible ball yet again.

Looks like only Ronnie and Toby showed up to play, again.

Thank goodness folks woke up in the second half. Jays win 75-65 and I believe take a series lead. 7 straight wins in the series.

CU leads the all time series now 26-25 after 51 games..

Give the Huskers credit. They competed BIG TIME in this game and the final wasn’t decided until basically the last minute (after Foster hit the HUGE 3)..

NU is much improved..and CU showed mental and physical toughness down the stretch. Great game and nice win for the Jays...

Nebraska's defense was solid, they got back and turned Creighton's offense to half court.
And yes, this was a 3 point game until the last minute.
At one point in the game McDermott and Miles shared a joke. Did anyone else see that?

Khyri Thomas 18th best draft pick according to bleacher report:

2018 NBA Draft Big Board: Top 50 Players 1 Month into CBB Season
Now packing a bigger punch offensively, Khyri Thomas has made a strong impression early, averaging 16.1 points, shooting 62.1 percent inside the arc and 43.9 percent behind it.

He's not a strong shot-creator, which limits his upside. But his jumper and transition game could be enough, assuming Thomas' defense drives his value.

Now in his third year at Creighton, he's established an identity as a tough, two-way role player. This would also be the third consecutive season he's shot above 39.3 percent from three.

Thomas is the type who'd benefit from landing on the right team that gives him an opportunity to play to his strengths as a three-and-D off guard.

Looking at UTA's roster and what they have done in the past this is probably the toughest Non Conference home game of the year.

Yeah crazy that we go from the probably the easiest non-conference opponent in the history of the CLink to one of better ones the very next game.

Not saying that Creighton is going to easily win, but this game reminds me of the North Texas home game 5 years ago. They had an NBA prospect and we had Doug McDermott. We won easily, 71-51.

The biggest difference is UT Arlington also has a supporting cast and is a much better overall team.

The good news, Creighton also is a much better overall team than the team 5 years ago as well.

The big difference I think between this UTA team and that North Texas team is the North Texas game was the opening game for both teams, North Texas just has the hype but not the results. UTA has had the results this year by going on the road and blowing BYU out in Provo.
