Boxing may be down, but it's not out
Omaha World Herald wrote:The old-timers say you couldn't find a parking spot, much less a ringside seat.

In the heyday of Omaha boxing, when the Civic Auditorium hosted professional fight nights almost monthly, fans sat so far from the ring they couldn't tell a hook from a jab. And it wasn't just when Smokin' Joe came to town...

When the prestigious National Golden Gloves Tournament descends on Omaha this week, the preliminary-round attendance at the Civic will make the old building feel like a "ghosthouse," said Carl Washington, a longtime Omaha boxing coach.

But here on the banks of the Missouri, where immigration has changed the face of south Omaha in particular, the fighting pulse still throbs; you just have to know where to look.

KPTM news just reported that the Chamber estimates that this event will bring around $3 M to the local economy.
I don't know how that compares to other events in town.
Since it is a 'first time' event - the last time Golden Gloves was here was in the early 80's I believe.

My Grandfather was a huge boxing fan and he would take me to the Golden Gloves all the time. You just never hear about them that much anymore. Omaha boxing used to be huge. The Civic was a perfect match for a boxing atmosphere. Anyone remember Ron Stander? He fought Joe Frazier for the title years back. It is great to have their presence back here again.

Crawford's eye on the prize
Omaha World Herald wrote:The Omaha fighter from the C.W. Boxing Club advanced to tonight's 132-pound championship bout at Qwest Center Omaha with a 3-2 decision over Carlos Molina of California in Friday night's semifinal round...

His victory didn't come easily. But Crawford still became the first Nebraska boxer to reach the final round of the Tournament of Champions since Lincoln's Ira Humm in 1994.

The state hasn't had a champion since 165-pounder Lamont Kirkland won the title in 1980.

In an apparent controversial decison, Crawford loses in the final..

From the W-H:

'After seemingly controlling the final three rounds of the four-rounder, Crawford, who was trying to become the first Nebraska boxer to win a national title since 1980, lost a 3-2 decision to Jesus Mendez III in a fight that nearly everyone in attendance, including a disgusted Crawford, thought he had won.'..

Crawford becomes Nebraska's first world champion boxer since 1914

Native son Terence “Bud” Crawford made history Saturday night at the Scottish Exhibition Centre, becoming the first boxer from his hometown to claim a major world championship.

Crawford (23-0) dominated World Boxing Organization lightweight champion Ricky Burns of Scotland, in front of his home fans, in a historic 12-round unanimous decision. No Nebraskan had won a major world title since Perry “Kid” Graves of Rock Bluff claimed the vacant welterweight crown in 1914.

The new champion said the idea of bringing a title fight in his hometown has been on the table since he easily handled junior welterweight contender Breidis Prescott on short notice last March.

Crawford’s promotional company, Top Rank, seemed to have concerns about putting on a big show in a city that hasn’t played host to a professional fight since 2007. Those concerns may have been answered by the way Omaha rallied in support of their new champion Saturday.
