Scrimmage, Open House and Luncheon Help Kick Off Soccer Season
Go Creighton wrote:The 2006 Creighton men’s soccer season begins this Saturday with an intrasquad scrimmage at Morrison Stadium.  The Blue-White Scrimmage, which will be free and open to the public, starts at 7:30 p.m. and will consist of two 30-minute periods.  Fans are invited to come get their first look at the defending Missouri Valley Conference champions and the 13 newcomers that join the team this fall.

The men’s soccer team opens exhibition play against outside competition at Akron next weekend.  The Bluejays will face the Zips on Friday, Aug. 18 and then take on either Clemson or St. John’s Sunday, Aug. 20 to wrap up exhibition play.  Creighton, ranked 10th in the CollegeSoccerNews.com preseason poll, will open the regular-season at a tournament hosted by Notre Dame.

Junge, Kraus Taken in MLS Supplemental Draft
Go Creighton wrote:Former Creighton men’s soccer players Ryan Junge and Michael Kraus were selected Thursday in the 2007 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft.  Junge was taken by the Columbus Crew as the 15th overall pick, second in the second round, and Kraus was selected by the Kansas City Wizards in the fourth round as the 48th overall pick.  The selections continue one of the most impressive streaks in college soccer, as the Creighton men are the only team in the nation to have at least one player drafted in each of the 12 MLS drafts ever held.

On the other end of the pipeline...  my nephew (who's grandfather, by the way, is former Millard superintendent, Donald Stroh)... is a star soccer player in Arizona, in his junior year at 'Cactus High School' (I love that, and there's only one in AZ)... and would love to play at Creighton.

Veteran Torres Retires To Return To Alma Mater
Our Sports Central wrote:The author of one of the most famous goals in Milwaukee Wave history has scored his final point. Johnny Torres, a six-year veteran of the club, has retired and will return to his alma mater this fall as a graduate assistant coach at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. While a player for the Blue Jays, Torres received the Hermann Award as the nation's top male college soccer player and led the Blue Jays to the NCAA Division I semifinals.

ESPN cameras captured the play that immortalized Torres for Wave fans on May 14, 2005. After a late Wave goal in regulation forced overtime in Game 1 of the 2005 MISL Championship Series against Cleveland, Torres pounced on a loose ball at the right edge of the penalty area and shoved it past Jim Larkin for a 10-9 Wave victory. Almost 7,000 fans at the U.S. Cellular Arena roared as Torres did a little dance before teammates engulfed him.

Torres Returns to Men's Soccer Program
Go Creighton wrote:Creighton men’s soccer head coach Bob Warming has announced Bluejay athletics Hall of Famer and two-time National Player of the Year Johnny Torres will return to the Bluejay bench this fall.  Torres, a two-time All-American and 2004 Creighton athletics Hall of Fame inductee, will return to school this fall to complete his degree while serving as an undergraduate student manager.

Torres has been awarded the NCAA Degree Completion Award, established in 1989 to assist former student-athletes who were unable to complete their education during their five-year eligibility.  Since its inception, the program has awarded nearly $14 million to over 2,000 deserving student-athletes.  Of those student-athletes who have received the award, 95 percent have obtained their undergraduate degree.
It is nice to see kids returning to their college to complete their degree. I did not know the NCAA had a Degree Completion Award with a 95% degree receiving rate.

With all the football/basketball back and forth bickering... gone unmentioned on this forum has been the Creighton men's soccer team.

They are now ranked 8th and the nation... and have slowly drawn enough fans downtown to rank #1 in the nation in  average attendance...

NCAA Attendance Leaders (as of 10/31)
1. Creighton - 3,117
2. Connecticut - 2,922
3. Duke - 2,866
4. Saint Louis - 2,651
5. Indiana - 2,455

Not too shabby.

This is really great for the university and the soccer program.  This may sound corny, but recruits are impressed by this kind of stuff.  It shows how strong of support CU has gained in the community over the years.

With this Creighton is ranked
#1 in soccer
#13 in men's basketball
#19 in volleyball
#25 in baseball (although mostly thanks to a nice 20,000+ game at Rosenblatt)
#40 in women's soccer

wow, how far Creighton has come.

Men's Soccer Claims Eighth MVC Regular-Season Title
Go Creighton wrote:The seventh-ranked Creighton men’s soccer team scored three unanswered goals to erase a 1-0 Evansville first-half lead and defeat the Purple Aces, 3-1, Saturday night in the regular-season finale at Black Beauty Field.  The Bluejays extend their unbeaten streak to 10 matches and finish the regular season 10-1-5 overall and 4-0-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference, claiming their second-straight Valley regular-season title and eighth overall.  CU tied Bradley for the crown for the second straight season and will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming State Farm MVC Tournament hosted by the Bluejays at Morrison Stadium next week.

Allen, Schmitz Taken in MLS SuperDraft
Go Creighton wrote:Former Creighton men’s soccer players and Omaha natives Matt Allen and Tony Schmitz were selected in the MLS SuperDraft Friday afternoon.  Allen was taken by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the third round and Schmitz was selected by D.C. United in the fourth round.  With the selections comes the extension of an impressive streak for the Bluejay soccer program, as Creighton is the only school in the nation to have at least one player picked in every MLS draft since the league’s inception.

Allen and Schmitz were the 19th and 20th Bluejays taken in the MLS Draft. Allen is the third Bluejay drafted by the Galaxy, joining Brian Mullan (2001) and Ishmael Mintah (2002).  Schmitz is just the second Bluejay taken by the United, joining CU’s first-ever MLS selection Brian Kamler – who was recently named to the 2008 National Soccer Hall of Fame ballot.

Shutouts over, but Jays win
STEVEN PIVOVAR WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Creighton's shutout streak ended Saturday but Andrei Gotsmanov made sure the Bluejays' unbeaten string remained intact. Men's Soccer Earns No. 7 National Seed
Go Creighton wrote:Creighton will be playing in the NCAA Tournament for the 17th consecutive season and for the second straight year the Bluejays have earned a top-eight national seed. With the No. 7 national seed comes a first-round bye and second-round home match, which will be played at Morrison Stadium on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m.. The second-ranked and seventh-seeded Bluejays (14-1-2) will play host to the winner of a first-round, Friday night match between Tulsa and UMKC.

Should the Bluejays be victorious in their second-round match next Tuesday night, they would also host an NCAA Tournament third-round match against UConn, Fairfield or No. 10 overall seed Virginia. The third-round match would be played on Saturday, Nov. 29 at Morrison Stadium (2:00 p.m., kick-off).
I thought they would get a higher seed considering they are ranked #2.

FYI:

Maryland fans (well, at least football fans) wear foam headgear that looks like turtles.  Much like the corn heads we see around here.

However, they call them:

Turtleheads.

I defecate thee not.

I was at the game Saturday, and man what an environment.  I would say there were a solid 3,000 people there, on a cold, rainy day.  Pretty dang good if you ask me.  The place went absolutely nuts when the Jays finally put one in in the 79th minute or whatever it was.  Its really too bad we don't get another home game.

Moral of the story: this was my first Creighton soccer game in a long time, I need to go more often.

Go Jays!

Creighton continues extends it's streak and remains the only team in the nation which has had a player drafted into the MLS... every year since it's inception.  This year... Andrei Gotsmanov was the 24th overall pick... going to the New York Revolution.

Soccer: Creighton's the winner in U.S. women's draw
Max Olson WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:“We knew if we were going to have a great facility like this, we were going to be able to get some really good events in here,” Creighton's women's soccer coach said. The game's attendance figure will certainly help Omaha's case for getting another national game — a stadium-record 6,493 fans packed into Morrison on Tuesday night.

In addition to strong facilities and a nearby airport, Tuesday's successful turnout is another big reason Erickson believes that Omaha will continue to be an attractive option for U.S. national teams. He hopes that the game will garner some nice word-of-mouth attention for Creighton in the U.S. soccer community. After all, some high praise from an influential source may have been a reason the team wanted to play in Omaha in the first place. Erickson refers back to 2007, when former U.S. women's team coach Tony DiCicco toured the stadium while in town for the Missouri Valley Conference women's tournament. “He walked through here and said, ‘This is the model of what pro leagues should have,' ” Erickson said of DiCicco, who was ESPN's color commentator for Tuesday's game.
