According to an Iowa Western official on the Travis Justice Radio Program on Big Sports 590, Iowa Western is Starting a Junior College Football Program. Â

They are still looking for a place to play and a conference.

Cool.

It seems to me... with the Omaha metro market... and their sprawling campus, Iowa Western has the potential to be the next larger university in Iowa. How about a cross river rivalry between Creighton and 'Western Iowa University' (or at least UNO for starters). I know, we're talking decades down the road.

Football Scores With IWCC

The IWCC Board of Directors gave the go ahead to proceed with the development of a football program at Monday's meeting. The board voted 6-1 in favor of the program. . .

But three things still must happen before the football program becomes a reality.

First, a conference must accept IWCC football.

Second, a stadium agreement would need to be signed to serve as the home for the team. [Thirdly] (a)fter the first two steps are complete, fundraising would begin.

Iowa Western President Dan Kinney said approximately $600,000 would need to be raised to start a Reiver football program. The initial funding would be used to hire a head coach, level ground for two practice fields and equipment. . .

Kinney said if everything falls into place, the Reiver football team could take the field in 2009.

Iowa Western has had a great JuCo Baseball program over the years, it doesn't surprise me that they are looking into football. Â Hopefully everything works out, this sounds like a great idea.

Reivers ready for some football

It started when two old friends found themselves on the same airplane flight.

One man is a community college president who had overseen one of the nation's top junior college football programs at his previous stop. The other man was in his final days as a U.S. congressman after a Hall-of-Fame career as a collegiate football coach.

One man had a dream. The other man specializes in making young people's dreams come true. Not surprisingly, the topic of college football found its way into their conversation. . .

The story that brought Osborne to a position of helping Iowa Western Community College start its football program goes back nearly two decades. It's a situation that Osborne views in the humble manner that has come to be expected of him.

"Probably just an advisory role. I've sat down and talked with them on two or three occasions," Osborne said. "I haven't been able to give them any magical advice."

The arrangement between Osborne and IWCC was announced at today's Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce quarterly luncheon. A compensation package has not been discussed, according to a source at the college.

From the first part of the article:

Iowa Western Community College President Dan Kinney drew a laugh from the crowd at the Mid-America Center for Tuesday's quarterly meeting of the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce, saying he'd have to be invited back to speak since it was the biggest crowd for such an event.

Then he introduced Tom Osborne as "the new football program adviser at Iowa Western Community College."

Just maybe a couple of those in attendance were there to see the former congressman and legendary college football coach of Nebraska . . .

From the second part of the article:

An agreement should be finalized in the coming weeks that will provide for Iowa Western Community College and the Council Bluffs Community Schools to share the college's running track and the district's football stadium.

IWCC President Dan Kinney made that announcement Tuesday during the quarterly meeting of the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce when he also announced that Nebraska football coaching legend Tom Osborne also would serve the school as an advisor on the fledgling program that looks to begin play in the fall of 2009.

Kinney also detailed other developing program plans.

Projections have the football team turning into a money maker, with annual income from the program projected at $1.12 million, topping the projected costs of $999,800.

Say Tom Osborne's name in the same sentence as "new college football program," and in these parts, imaginations tend to run wild.

Could it be the Nebraska coaching legend and former U.S. congressman will be the first coach of the new football program at Iowa Western Community College?

Well, no.

But it is true that Osborne is involved in the Council Bluffs community college's planning stages for a National Junior College Athletic Association football program.

Osborne's role with Iowa Western is strictly as an advisor to President Dan Kinney, a longtime acquaintance.

If IWCC is smart, they'll put Tom Osborne to work in the fundraising department. His presence will elicit donations from people who wouldn't talk to them otherwise. When my school was starting a football program, we had Lee Roy Selmon (who is worshipped locally) on staff. People would donate money to the program would just to rub elbows with the man.

I think that's a great idea Gary, and I'm sure Pres. Kinney is banking heavily on Tom's involvement, no matter at what level, to help spur this on to greater heights, but fundraising will be key, and you definitely want somebody like the coach to get to those donors.

Land for football stadium donated to IWCC

A permanent home for Iowa Western Community College's budding football program took a giant step closer to reality Thursday with the official announcement of the gift of 105 acres of land just east of the existing college campus by Omaha developer and philanthropist John A. Wiebe. . . .

"Mr. Wiebe has been a long-time admirer of Tom Osborne and his TeamMates program," Kinney said. "When he saw that Tom Osborne had agreed to serve as an advisor to our football program, that sparked his interest."

Kinney said he was contacted by Wiebe in June suggesting that the two men meet. Those discussions culminated last Monday when Wiebe presented the deed for the 105-acre tract to Kinney. . . .

Kinney said no stipulations were included when Wiebe turned over the deed to the property to the college.

"He said, 'Do with it what you need to do with it. I want the college to have it for the football stadium,'" Kinney said.

Kinney said the stadium, which will be named Wiebe Stadium, will be built toward the south end of the 105-acre site.

He said the stadium, which will seat 5,000 carries what is currently being estimated as a $10 million price tag. He said the stadium would have an eight-story press box with sky boxes and coaches boxes. The field's all-weather surface will be suitable for both football and soccer, and the playing field will be encircled by an all-weather track.

The current design also features a community room on the ground level of the press box. Parking lots for those attending games or events at the stadium are also planned.

Kinney said college officials who have been working with an architect to prepare the initial plans for the stadium have stressed that the design should allow for future expansion of the facility.

"When it's completed," Kinney said, "it's going to be bigger and better than anything in the metro area today. . . .

Potential development on the north half of the property - south of U.S. Highway 6 and bounded on the east and west by Interstate-80 and College Road - could, in addition to funding construction of the stadium, bring a real economic boost to the community, Kinney said.

Football stadium to bear Omaha developer's name

John Wiebe suggested giving credit to his late wife, Harriet, for the gift of land to Iowa Western Community College.

"My wife always said, 'The spirit of giving is triggered by a grateful heart.' She passed away last year. We were married for 64 years and nine months," he said.

The Omaha developer opened the first enclosed shopping mall ever built, known as the Center Mall in Omaha. He developed the Westroads in Omaha and others as well. Now he has decided to give IWCC 105 acres of land next to the community college. . . .

The stadium will be named Wiebe Stadium and early plans call for a 5,000-seat, $10-million structure to be built in the next couple of years.

"This can become a showcase, and a new front door to the community," Kinney said.

Wiebe's gift to IWCC appraised at $18M

Iowa Western Community College officials knew John Wiebe's gift of land was worth millions of dollars. Now they know exactly how many millions of dollars.

"We have received an appraisal of $18 million," IWCC President Dan Kinney said Thursday. "We may sell some of the land - maybe up to half of it - but no decision has been made at this point." . . .

Looks like Dr. Kinney has made his decision...CBRE recently posted "For Sale" signs on the property...listing all 105 acres. Â So much for a football stadium...

Iowa Western hires football coach

Iowa Western Community Colleg hired Scott Strohmeier as its head football coach. The Reivers begin playing in the Midwest Football Conference in the fall 2009.

Strohmeier, head coach of the North Iowa Area Community College Trojans, will arrive in Council Bluffs this summer to begin recruiting and building for the college's inaugural football season. . . .

Strohmeier turned a struggling program into a winner during his three-year stint at NIACC in Mason City, Iowa. The Trojans, who were 2-9 in Strohmeier’s first season at the helm, recorded back-to-back 7-4 campaigns in 2006 and 2007 . . .

At least not all hope is lost for the new stadium...

Since then, the school set up a deal with the Council Bluffs Community School District allowing the IWCC football team to use a district stadium for home games. . .

Eventually, Kinney said, IWCC will be able to build a new football stadium. Omaha developer John Wiebe gave 105 acres of land to the college last August, and part of that land will likely become the site of a new facility, to be named Wiebe Stadium. Preliminary plans had called for a 5,000-seat, $10 million structure, but Kinney said a new stadium could be three or four years away. . . .

Iowa Western football off and running

A look at the Iowa Western Community College 2008 football schedule would show a blank schedule. After all, the Reivers are a year away from playing a game.

But you can't tell that by the activities of head coach Scott Strohmeier. Just try catching up to the man.

"We've been busy," said Strohmeier, "getting the guys into the dorms. We have 50 on campus with a few more still to come."

This is Iowa Western's first class and will be the sophomore nucleus for the Sept. 9, 2009 kickoff. . .

Fax machine hums at Reivers' football office

The fax machine in the football office at Iowa Western Community College was humming Wednesday as the list of future Reivers grew.

By the end of the day, "we have 46 signed," said Iowa Western coach Scott Strohmeier. "We are expecting 15 to 20 more in the next two day and Friday we are having more guys visiting campus." . . .

Wow... they're coming from all over the map. Â Maybe Iowa Western will become the next Butler or Coffeyville... establish a new pipeline right down to Lincoln.

I see Nebraska's "#1" rated recruit in Vondrea Tostenson... must have some academic issues to address himself.

I'd almost be surprised if IWCC doesn't start crushin opponents within a few years. They have a good basketball team and women's volleyball, and many players come play there who are unable to get scholarships right out of high school. Big universities can pick them up after they prove their abilities at a JuCo and save money on a full 4 year scholarship.

It starts at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 5 at Council Bluffs Stadium.

“It’s the first ever college football game played in Council Bluffs and in southwest Iowa,” said Dan Kinney, president of Iowa Western Community College.

That’s the day the IWCC football program will make its debut in a contest against Iowa Central Community College of which Kinney’s son, Daniel, is the president. As a way to start a rivalry between these schools, a trophy is being created for the annual winner and named in honor of the two college presidents. Hence, the Kinney Cup. . . .

The pre-game festivities begin two hours prior to kickoff with the appearance of two Heisman Trophy winners, Eric Crouch and Johnny Rodgers, both of whom will be available for autographs and photos. They’re also expected to bring along their trophies, the highest individual award in college football. . . .

Reivers kick off new era with football loss

Iowa Western showed enough promise Saturday at C.B. Stadium to give its fans plenty to be optimistic about in its inaugural football season. Yet, the Reivers made enough mistakes to cost themselves any chance to win their first-ever contest.

No. 20 Iowa Central had three long touchdown runs and turned a late first-half turnover into another score to top IWCC 42-28 in front of a first-game crowd estimated at 4,000. . . .

IWCC's debut a success despite defeat

Let the record show that at exactly 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, Iowa Western Community College’s Shane Prater received a kickoff from Iowa Central’s Edwin Arceo.

At that moment, a mere 156 years after our town changed its name from Kanesville to Council Bluffs, the first college football game played within these city limits was under way. . . .

Tom Osborne gave a pregame congratulatory address on the video board and sent his best wishes to the team. Former Heisman Trophy winners Eric Crouch and Johnny Rodgers added a little star power to the pregame festivities. . . .

The scoreboard may not have reflected the victory that Iowa Western Community College recorded here Saturday. But it was a full-fledged triumph. Here’s hoping Council Bluffs continues to take note of the good things that are bound to happen in the Reiver program. . . .

Reivers let first win slip away

The first win in school history was there for the taking, but Iowa Western’s inability to pass and defend the pass cost it in a home loss to Joliet Junior College.

The Wolves (3-0) edged the Reivers 25-22 on a 28-yard field goal by Jason Owens with 2:39 remaining Saturday at C.B. Stadium. IWCC (0-2) seemingly had the game in hand when leading 15-6 midway through the third quarter before two big pass plays by Joliet turned the game into a shootout. . . .

Reivers collect first-ever football win

Always good to rack up your first road win, I think by next year IWCC could be making some noise with their program...

IWCC nets first road win

After a wild second half filled with special teams miscues, Iowa Western put one decisive drive together to earn its first-ever road win.

The Reivers (2-3) edged the College of DuPage 33-29 at Bob McDougal Field on Saturday on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Austin McBeth to Matt Thayer with 8:56 remaining. The play capped a 65-yard drive that answered a go-ahead score by the Chaparrals (3-3) that ended a back-and-forth 10-minute stretch filled with errors on both sides. . . .

At least 4 of the 5 they have played are well-established programs, a few are nationally ranked, one is a defending national champ in their division.

The Reivers administer a homecoming thrashing of 'Rock Valley'... 41-21 to go 3-3 on the season. Â They remain in the Midwest Football Conference West Division play-off hunt.

Not a bad start for a new program...

IWCC Closes Season with Upset of No. 11 Ellsworth

Midway through the third quarter at Cadet Field Saturday, Iowa Western trailed by 14 points, had no rushing yards and was inconsistent in its passing game.

Then coach Scott Strohmeier turned to his most electrifying player for an offensive spark.

Dominique Corder led the Reivers to 17 unanswered points in a stunning 20-17 come-from-behind victory over No. 11 Ellsworth that was capped by a Dan Biddick field goal with 13.8 seconds remaining.

The win allowed Iowa Western (5-4) to finish in a three-way tie with Iowa Central and North Dakota State College of Science for second place in the Midwest Football Conference’s West Division. It also capped a 5-1 run to end the season by the Reivers after an 0-3 start. . . .
