Valentino's plans to tear down its original restaurant at 35th and Holdrege streets but will continue to operate at the site as part of a large redevelopment project.
The longtime Lincoln restaurant company is working with local developer WRK LLC to build a mixed-use development.
The plans call for two three-story buildings. One will be built east of the existing restaurant on what now is its parking lot. Valentino's will occupy about 3,400 square feet on the first floor, with about 3,400 more square feet left for other retail. The top two floors likely will contain offices.
The other building will be built on the spot where Val and Zena Weiler started the iconic restaurant in 1957. The building will have about 4,200 square feet of first-floor retail and 23 apartment units on the top two floors.
Losing some history, but this will be a cool project near East Campus.
So when I was in high school in the 70's we used to drive to Lincoln for Vals when they we only on 33rd & then on 70th & A. Â I started at UNL & THEN they opened in Omaha. Â
The thing is that Vals just isnt the same as when they only had one location. Â Same is true for Godfathers...not the same as when they started on 99th & Q. Â You get too big & you lose the quality.
Having said all that I'd go to Vals right now if I could.

I haven't been to the 33rd St. Lincoln Vals, for at least 10 years, but it was still much better than the other expanded locations.
It's good to hear that they're upgrading, as long as the new design can capture some of the ambiance of the original place....maybe without the red vinyl chairs though.
He said "They are some big, ugly red brick buildings" ...and then they were gone.
The Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Commission on Wednesday voted to accept a consultant’s finding that a seven-acre area at roughly 35th and Holdrege streets is blighted.
The designation, which must be approved by the City Council, opens up the use of tax incentives to help redevelop the area.
In this case, the blight designation will help subsidize a specific redevelopment that’s already in the works: a plan to tear down the original Valentino’s restaurant and build two three-story mixed-use buildings in its place.
So if it great for the old market it is automaticly bad for Lincoln? Â
They are not near each other so does it really matter. Â IT is FAR from the first time that the same basic design is used. Â Bet if you look hard enogh you will find a THIRD building with the same basic look.
For the record NEBUGEATER does not equal BUGEATER !!!!!!!
