NE Legislature on the Incentives package

Post by Coyote »

Debate continues on incentives' cost
LB 312 (Advantage Nebraska Act) still in Revenue Committee.
Now if only LR8CA debate ends  maybe business can continue on the floor.

LR8CA finally finds cloture.
LB 312 is down to one question "What strings should be attached to the state money that those businesses which don't create new jobs receive?"
Revenue committee close to agreement

They totally need to make it work....This tax thing is key to the future of Nebraska I just hope the senators realize they will be dropping the ball if they don't make this happen. We definately need to be competitive when it comes to business in Nebraska.

I agree.

I watched a lot of the legislature today but for the hour and a half I was watching they were only talking about that inane motor-cycle helmet bill.

I'm begining to think they're not going to get to LB430 this sesion. Do bills carry over?

As long as you have a sponsor a bill this session - being an odd year - can carry over through the next session. For instance LR8CA (the bill Chambers has been filibustering) will probably be put off until next year to garner greater support.

It has yet to leave the General Affairs Committee.
With LB 454 (concealed handgun permit) coming up tomorrow, day 69, I am beginning to wonder how much more business they have left.

Day 69 Was spent on the Meth Bill LB117.

It seems there may be some progress on the tax incentives.
Gov. Dave Heineman wrote:"I think we're very, very, very close. It's a matter of days now, if not hours."

OWH article: Impact of meth bill is debated
One of the best lines today: A senator yielded the remainder of his time to Ernie Chambers in recognition of May's Older Americans Celebration. When someone pointed out it was still April someone responded that's why he only got 30 seconds.

Attached is a letter I recieved from one of my acquaintences (who shall remain anonymous) at the chamber:

Dear Fellow Young Professional:

As you know, Omaha is in a continuous battle to attract and retain young professionals to help the city grow and prosper. A vibrant nightlife is among the qualities that have previously been identified as important in bringing young professionals to Omaha and keeping them here. One way to help create a more vibrant nightlife is to allow certain establishments to stay open past 1 a.m. Current law requires establishments serving alcohol to close at 1 a.m. Of the 50 largest cities in America, Omaha is the only city where on a weekend night a young professional cannot purchase an alcoholic beverage past 1 a.m.

A bill pending in the Nebraska Legislature, LB 430, will allow localities to grant licenses for certain establishments to stay open and serve alcohol until 2 a.m. Currently, this bill is stuck in the General Affairs Committee of the Nebraska Legislature. It needs five votes to get out of committee and presently only has four. The potential fifth vote is Senator Mike Friend of Omaha who has previously abstained from voting on motions to advance the bill out of committee.

If you are interested supporting this bill, please click on the link below so that you can send Senator Friend an e-mail (mfriend@unicam.state.ne.us) in support of LB 430. Also, please forward this e-mail on to your friends who you think may also support LB 430. Together we can make a difference, but time is of the essence as this year's legislative will come to an end in June.

*** I've signed and sent an email...I urge you all to do the same.
