City seeking developer for block bound by 9th, 10th, M & N

For nearly a century, the art deco building at the corner of 10th and M streets has stood a silent witness to the ebb and flow of downtown Lincoln.


But the 233 Building — which started life as a pharmaceutical manufacturing company and once housed Lincoln Police headquarters — stands in the path of advancing progress, the only building left on a block potentially ripe for redevelopment.

Dave Landis, the city’s urban development director, said there are several factors that could make the block attractive to developers, including that there are only three landowners to deal with, a rarity for downtown, and at least one of them — the city — would be an eager participant.


The other two landowners are the Jinni Chung Revocable Living Trust and local development company Speedway Properties.

The City and Speedway own basically the south half of the block which fronts M Street obviously. Hopefully a developer can acquire the whole block but just the southern half alone is a sizeable piece. It is nice in Lincoln that there does not appear to be a noisy contingent that will protest redevelopment and hamper progress in Lincoln. It will be nice to see the momentum go forward for Downtown Lincoln.

Probably not much opposition due to the block being a surface lot and an extremely ugly old two story building.
