Committee to look at citywide wireless
Lincoln Journal Star wrote:“Providing wireless Internet access throughout the city can have the potential to strengthen our public safety response and communication, enhance our economic development efforts, augment travel and tourism revenues and improve the quality of life for all Lincoln citizens,” Cook said.

One possibility: The city-owned electric utility, LES, may be able to provide a backbone to the system with its unused fiber optic lines, or dark fiber, Cook said. Lincoln is one of many cities studying whether to provide Internet access for free or for a small fee, following in the footsteps of more than 100 municipalities that already have networks or hot zones, according to http://www.MuniWireless.com

September 2006 update of wireless cities and counties in the US
MuniWireless wrote:I have updated my report of US wireless cities and counties. Since the last report (dated 7 June 2006), there has been a significant increase in the number of cities and regions that have issued RFPs or RFIs. Indeed over the past year, the number of planned deployments has gone up from 34 to 135.
