Kawasaki's 30M expansion

Post by almighty_tuna »

Kawasaki's been a great thing for Lincoln and they continue to grow.  Maybe they'll be making our streetcars in a year ;)
LJS wrote:Kawasaki announced Wednesday a $30 million expansion of its Lincoln mass transit rail car plant that will add about 300 jobs over the next three years.

The expansion will be done in three phases, said Vice President and Plant Manager Richard Grundman, with the first phase adding 70,000 square feet to the 437,000-square-foot plant that is just south of Kawasaki’s main manufacturing facility at 6600 N.W. 27th St.

The realization of more expansion for Kawasaki.
LJS wrote:The 36,000-square-foot test building and 2,000-foot-long test track make the Lincoln plant the only site in North America with the ability to build rail cars from the ground up and test them on-site, said Mike Boyle, vice president and manager of the Lincoln Kawasaki plant.

I believe only part of this contract will be built in Lincoln. Some will be built at a plant in NY. Great get no matter what. They are still delivering cars to the Wash DC metro system from Lincoln too by the way.
For the record  NEBUGEATER does not equal BUGEATER    !!!!!!!

I was able to catch the Metro North cars they built from time to time. Union Pacific would pick them up 6 at a time and bring them up through Omaha on their way east. I am assuming since the article says they are doing final assembly in NY, we won't be able to do that with this order...

Kawasaki discussing restructuring rail car division after huge losses

https://journalstar.com/business/local/ ... a3c0b.html
MATT OLBERDING Lincoln Journal Star wrote:The parent company of Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing reported huge losses in its rail car division — largely because of issues at its U.S. operations based in Lincoln — and the head of the company suggested it could exit the business altogether.
MATT OLBERDING Lincoln Journal Star wrote:However, its rolling stock division, which is the one that makes train cars, lost more than $78 million during the six-month period, much of it because of cost overruns and other problems at its U.S. operations, which are based in Lincoln and employ several hundred people.

Kawasaki Revs Up Production with $200M Expansion
Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing wants to increase production of jet skis, ATVs and rail car products in Lincoln, Nebraska.

This week, the company announced a $200 million investment in the plant to make it happen over the next 18 months.

The move will create 550 new jobs and increase the number of assembly, paint and welding lines at the facility. The Kawasaki Heavy Industries subsidiary currently employs 2,400 people in the area.

The investment will also include more automation, which the company says is the result of low unemployment in the area.

The expansion is fueled by increased consumer demand, an attempt to gain market share in the powersports industry and a $1.45 billion contract to make subway cars for the New York City transit authority, according to the Lincoln Journal Star.

That's great news. A significantly larger investment than the previous one that started this thread.
