Lincoln Race Course

Post by CapitalGuy »

Horse Racing to Stay in Lincoln
During a legislative hearing Thursday on the future of horse racing, members of 2015 Vision and other groups are scheduled to unveil a proposal for Goldenrod Downs — a 180-acre development at the northeast corner of 84th Street and Havelock Avenue that would include a mile-long race track and other features, according to a source who has seen a draft of the plans.
Along with the new track — a significant upgrade from the 5/8-mile track at State Fair Park — Goldenrod Downs would be home to a grandstand, commercial activity and space for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s equine programs, the source said.

Mike Patterson / World-Herald staff writer wrote:The dream of the state’s horsemen to expand the racetrack in Lincoln appears ready to become a reality.

The Nebraska Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association announced Saturday that construction will begin soon to extend the track at Lincoln Race Course. The track is expected to be completed by June 1, 2019 with live racing taking place later in the year.

The Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Commission on Wednesday recommended approval of an amendment to the development plan for Southwest Village at South First Street and West Denton Road.

The Nebraska Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association had originally planned to build a 1-mile-long track on the site, which would have required the relocation of South First Street, but it later determined that would be too expensive.

The horsemen’s group said last year it plans to build a smaller 7/8-mile track, which will not require relocation of the road.

"quite an upgrade" is an understatement. This is a huge investment with a good sized hotel. Makes what we are getting in Omaha look dinky, but I get it, they don't have the competition we do in CB.

Margaret Reist, LJS wrote:“Having a first-rate facility here will be a draw for the community and all of Nebraska and it will be something that will perpetuate the notion that Lincoln is the capital of the state and all the events that are held here are going to be a big deal,” said Lance Morgan, president and CEO of Ho-Chunk Inc., the economic development corporation of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. “It will just be one more reason to come here and we want to make sure we do that right.”

Am I the only who thought this was going to be about a motor racing track?

Quick google and it looks there are 7 horse tracks called "Race Course" and I actually thought there would be more.

Honest random question? What's the allure of one of these? Is it purely for gambling? Are the races more fun that that?

Are the animals treated well?

At least a Horseman's Park here in Omaha, where they only race 2 weekends a year, its almost like a festival atmosphere. Bands and beer tents, a little gambling, and just something different to do out in the sun on a nice day.

I'm sure that's an opinion that varies person to person.
