Blackstone Plaza (Former Kiewit Tower)

Post by Adam »

There's some construction going on at the Kiewit Building on Farnam (approximately 38th and Farnam... not sure of the actual address).

They have all the streets under construction surrounding the building and are doing some major work on the building itself.

Anybody have any ideas what is going on here?

Largest thread revival ever?

The WOWT/lobby wing of the building got a new paint scheme. There was some equipment hanging off the tower that seemed like the tower might get a fresh coat.

It isn't dramatically different, but the paint is darker.

Yeah, I still remember about falling out of my chair laughing the first time I saw this thread revival photo. Still love it.
My son got a 27 on his ACT. No this score is not as high as what Jeff's son achieved. But one has to remember the paternal gene-pool my son has to overcome. On a PGPAB [Paternal Gene-Pool Adjusted Basis], my son's score is a 37 and Jeff's son's PGPAB ACT score is 19.

Definitely getting a new color scheme. Looks nice for the part they have done, interested to see the finished product.

For some reason today when I was heading west at Farnam, the new colors really jumped out at me. Its the 3rd or 4th time I have been up Farnam this week, but today I noticed it so I turned around and went back for a photo.

"Other area developments includes a planned 200-unit apartment complex featuring street level retail space"

Umm, where is this?

BS Corner is 110ish, Phase 2 of Brite Ideas about the same, The apartments/hotel wraparound adjacent to the twin towers is like 118. I can't seem to even imagine where this is, unless of course, it hasn't officially been announced yet. :D

Yea, I'm not sure I'm a fan. Black is fine, but break it up with some grey accents or something.

When is painting supposed to be done? 60-90 days?

I hope they add accents of some sort. Looks monolithic right now.

It does look a little harsh, I will have to see it in person to have a better idea , it could look good.

It definitely looks better in person than in those pictures. Not everyone is going to like it. But people will notice it and the old color scheme somehow made one of the tallest buildings in Midtown barely noticeable.

Yeah, I've been by a number of times and I like it. I personally thought the previous colors made it look like a stretched-tall strip mall. But of course, that is just an opinion.

Yeah-

Pics sometimes don’t do certain developments justice. I need to get over there and check it out in person…

I wonder if it will have any signage on it or accent colors. To be just completely black might be a little much. This building has been painted before, seems to be a popular building to paint. Maybe they will add a permanent structure/ Antenna on the roof like the Sears tower in Chicago to add some height. The building I believe is currently around 200 ft.

In my opinion it looks like schit. Like a giant black tombstone. They will rue the day they approved dipping this historic building in black ink.

Had not seen this rendering until today. Still think the black makes the building looks way cleaner and modern.

I like the gray on top, helps soften it somewhat. It was strange that this highrise was built outside the downtown area in 1961. I’ve always thought this should be downtown. But it does show up well sitting on a high spot in midtown. I read somewhere Peter Kiewit did not like downtown Omaha. This was maybe the best office building in the state when it was built.

I just drove by today after visiting UNMC. I was headed east on Harney. I think it looks fine in context, at least from that angle. I think it looks more sophisticated. The foreground was the Cottonwood Hotel, including the extension. The west side is completely painted while the south and east faces are only partially done.

I included the paint job in my latest Grow Omaha Construction Update. If you go to the 3:30 mark you can see the Black and the former earth tones side by side.
