KC has 4.
I think Minneapolis has 15.
I saw on the Travel Channel that DT Houston has 20 something F500 companies headquartered there.

The entire state of Iowa has 2. Des Moines has one of those (Principal), the other is Maytag in Newton.

Denver currently has 8, 3 of which are downtown.

I'm quite positive the only ones in Nebraska are in Omaha.

This corporate presence was always one of Omaha's strengths. Do any of you forsee any companies that may become F500 contenders in the future?

In Des Moines, Mid-American used to be an F500 company before it was purchased by Warren Buffett, but the only two that remain in the DSM CSA are the ones that OhioStreetKid mentioned. I can see Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Hy-Vee foods (private) and maybe Pella Windows becoming F500 companies in the future.

Valmont Industries, West Corporation, First National Bank of Omaha, Commercial Federal Bank and Ameritrade are my best guesses as to potential future Fortune 500 companies in the Omaha are. Anyone else have any others?

Here is a quick thought. If Ameritrade reaches F500 status, maybe they will leave their MALL and build downtown. :D :D They are the only company on that list that hasnt built a new headquarters in the past few years(almost all in west o sadly, with one really big and tall exception).

Last year #500 had revenues of $3.2 billion, so there is your measuring stick. Last year Werner was #873 on the 1000, with $1.457 billion in revenue.

Now to the list, these are previous year revenues...

Ameritrade: $921m
Valmont: $971m
West Corp: $1.15b
Comfed:$580m

FNBO and Gallup aren't public so it would take a bit more sleuthing to find that data. FNBO was on the F 1000 about 3 years ago at around $1.0b and I would guess that Gallup is no where near F500 or F1000 ranks.

As for the city rankings...

I wasn't able to find the rankings I had hoped for but a few other cities worth noting (this are companies with addresses within city limits/ no suburbs)...

Birmingham: 6 F500 and 8 F1000.
New York City: 42 F500
Milwaukee: 7 F500 11 F1000
Tulsa: 1 F500 2 F1000
Des Moines: 1 F500 (Principal) Maytag is the other F500 in IA
Kansas City: 3 F500 7 F1000
St. Lious: 7 F500 11 F1000
Minne.: 7 F500

Again, this is without suburbs included. StP/Mlps metro is close to 17.

I think that everyone can access most of this data for free from http://www.fortune.com.

What does Valmont do?

I would like to see Omaha companies grow to F500 levels, but I think we should seriously try to wrestle one from someplace else. Namely California since it is becoming increasingly harder and expensive to do business there.

I believe they produce various farm equipment, most notably center pivot irrigation systems. They started as Valley manufacturing but changed to their current name from Valley and Fremont.

www.valmont.com/asp/company/company11.asp wrote: It all began with farming. In 1946, after serving in World War II as a Marine, Robert B. Daugherty began looking for a good business opportunity...and found one. Daugherty recognized the potential of a small manufacturing company owned by an inventor named Sam McCleneghan. After careful consideration, he invested virtually his entire life savings – $5,000 – in the company. The company, which was situated on a farm just west of Valley, Nebraska, was named Valley Manufacturing and began by building farm elevators.

In 1967, the name of the company was changed to Valmont Industries, Inc., to avoid confusion with other companies using Valley in their name. The name Valmont is a combination of two Nebraska communities located on either side of the first Valmont plant...Valley and Fremont.

Eventually, the new company contracted with Sears, Roebuck to supply 1,000 farm elevators. They soon added speed jacks, wagon hoists, universal joints, hay racks, stalk cutters, minimum tillage tools, and a front-end loader to their product line. When recession hit the farm industry in 1952, Valley Manufacturing began looking for ways to diversify. That search led down the road to Columbus, Nebraska, where a visionary was struggling to breathe life into a revolutionary idea: the center pivot.
www.valmont.com/asp/company/company8.asp wrote:Valmont currently operates from 43 facilities located in fourteen countries around the world. The Company is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, and employs over 5,600 highly trained personnel worldwide, with approximately 1,500 located in Nebraska.

Throughout its long manufacturing history, Valmont has consistently sought the best ways to apply advancing technology to products and processes alike. "We will remain focused on what we do best," said Mogens C. Bay, Valmont's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "We see ample opportunities to expand our businesses globally and in North America and, over time, we expect our investments around the world to further accelerate our growth. Our performance is the direct result of the skills, dedication and hard work of each member of the Valmont team.

Omaha F500 Count Slips

Post by DMRyan »

The 2005 edition of the Forbes 500 has been released and it looks like Peter Kiewit and Sons has slipped to #521, putting it out of the top. On the bright side, they're not far from regaining their position next year if they build on profits or other companies slide.

Here's the Fortune 1000 list for Nebraska. Anyone have a list of the privately owned F1000's?

Company/Rank/Profits/City

1 Berkshire Hathaway -- 12 -- 74,382.0 -- Omaha
2 ConAgra Foods -- 121 -- 18,178.7 -- Omaha
3 Union Pacific -- 174 -- 12,215.0 -- Omaha
4 Mutual of Omaha Ins. -- 463 -- 4,080.2 -- Omaha

5 Peter Kiewit Sons' -- 521 -- 3,352.0 -- Omaha
6 Werner Enterprises -- 858 -- 1,678.0 -- Omaha
7 Cabela's -- 903 -- 1,556.0 -- Sidney

OH well we still have more than mighty Kansas City 8)

Werners revenue has been skyrocketing. With a good economy they may well be our next F500 company

Wests revenue is $1.2B. Not enough to make the cut. If they keep acquiring other companies like they have as of late though it might not take long to get there.

Ameritrade and Valmont are also right at $1B.

We have quite the diverse economy huh. Transportation, banking, insurance, agriculture, telecommunications, construction, we have giants in many fields.

Just to kind of add to this the recent Forbes magazine has the World's 2000 largest companies (market value) and Omaha is represented very well.

1. Bershire Hathaway - 15
2. Union Pacific - 288
3. ConAgra Foods - 354
4. Ameritrade - 1099
5. Westcorp - 1465

Now the odd thing is that Mutual of Omaha, Peter Kiewit, and Werner weren't listed at all. I think though this goes to show that Omaha is a major player when it comes to business.

That brings Omaha into a tie with cities like Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, and three other metropolitan areas, with five total Fortune 500 businesses.

Good for them.  They realized health insurance was a frigging dog (contrary to the politicians trying to get the sheople to think it is some huge cash cow) and dropped it.  Then, they made a very timely entry into the banking business.  Run well, they could continue to climb a bit more.

Who needs to use the whole Fortune 500? All we need here in Omaha is the top 400!

Does anyone know when their schedule for releasing the 1000 list that they have done in the past? TD Ameritrade, West, Green Plains and one or two others were on that list last time.
