I read on Facebook that City Brew Coffee has lost its lease and is closing at the end of the Month.  Wonder if its Walmart Related...

It is my understanding that they are losing their lease due to Schlotzsky's taking over the corner and the currently unoccupied building.

The Omaha City Council this week approved Walmart's plan to build a Walmart Neighborhood Market on North Saddle Creek Road. Construction of the grocery store is expected to begin later this year.

The old Target store, which has been vacant since 2006, would be demolished and the site converted into a Neighborhood Market, which would sell groceries and include a pharmacy.

Someone correct me... Is the old Target that whole structure? It seems like it is two blocks long (N/S) by 100ft (E/W).
Is Ace Hardware a part of the building or a separate structure?

This will do great in the area. Aside from Baker's further south, I don't think there really is a cheap grocery option in that section.

It is a bit of an oddball location.  Resembles a pencil in shape.  But Walmart does their homework.  They will make it work for them.

Was told it should take 6 months from beginning of demo to open.  Also was told the other retail bays I mentioned are out, but the new Wal-Mart structure will be about 200 feet north of the Westlake store front.

Good Luck. It sounds like everything is still up in the air according to this article... http://omaha.com/article/20131007/NEWS/131009028

Just to the left of this photo, they have actually knocked down part of the front wall and you can see in. The whole roof is gone already, its just the outside walls.

So are they not tearing down the panera and ace hardware? The fence stops just short of those buisnesses.

They cut a decent way into the hill at the back of the property. Massive retaining wall going in.

That makes since since the property seemed really narrow.

Final wall of the old Target came down this morning. You can see the west wall of the new Neighborhood Market going up.

Saddle Creek WalMart

Post by FrankJones »

Hey guys, a couple questions about that new WalMart being built just north of Dodge on Saddle Creek.

Have they announced when it is going to be open? I see they're now starting to construct walls, and I suspect maybe an opening this year?

Is it going to be a SuperWalMart, or Neighborhood Market, or what? Seems like kind of a small area to have a full-sized Wally.

Thanks!

It is just a Neighborhood Market. These things don't take long to build, I bet it opens by fall.

Cool. That'll be a good thing. I'm not a big WalMart fan, but it beats the heck out of that empty Target store just sitting there.

Saturday 4/19/2014 Photo Update. I can't believe hoe many people choose to build a north facing building in Nebraska.

I have a feeling that it faces north because that is where they expect the most of their customers to come from. Now wether that is a request from the city or Wal-Marts own research idk.

I'm assuming that was because it works better with parking. The old Target faced east and it was very non-traditional in how wide but shallow the lot was.

I was thinking they could push it all the way north and have it face south.

I just seems like this is now isolated from the rest of the shopping center. If it was the other way, people could walk to Ace or Panara, now they would be more inclined to drive.

Agreed. Looks like very poor planning having it face north (bad idea with Nebraska winters) plus cut-off from the rest of the shopping to the south. Might have had something to do with the store layout or loading dock. It shouldn't make any difference what direction they think people will be coming from. If it's a Walmart, people will find it.

Also could have something to do with Ace wanting more parking access, with Walmart facing away Westlake might get all of the space on the side of their building for plants next year instead of having to worry about encroaching on Walmart customers.. They have next to zero room to put their plants outside without giving up their dozen or so parking stalls. Honestly I don't think I have ever seen a hardware store with less parking.

I am happy to see more retail and more jobs coming to the neighborhood. One more grocery option isn't a bad thing, either. I do wish that Aldi or Trader Joes would consider the area for a store.

I wonder how Aldi decides if they're going to build a Trader Joes or an Aldi, do they operate as separate units under the same corp or are these kind of decisions centrally planned, based on data about the neighborhood?

I can't help but notice how much more homely these new stores built in Omaha look compared with the ones in Sarpy County. Didn't Omaha adopt better building standards a few years ago? Or was I dreaming?
