Besides Boyd & Charlies, does anyone else do NC BBQ?  I went to high school in coastal NC and miss some vinegary goodness pig.

Apparently Boxer BBQ is remodeling and opening again.

I was excited to hear that Boxer BBQ was re-opening, but was disappointed after eating there Friday night...

1.  The Food Wasn't as good as before.  4 of us and nobody thought it was as good as it was before.
2.  No More Liquor
3.  No More servers, order at the counter
4.  This "remodeling" they did was a joke.  They built a new counter to order at and a couple new tables but that's about it.  Place basically look exactly the same.

Ok, first, what's the best Omaha BBQ in your opinion?

Second, do you have a favorite style of BBQ? (Carolina, Memphis, KC, Texas, etc.)

Third, do you BBQ at home?  What, without giving away a family secret, is it that makes your BBQ great?

I was reading a story in the KCStar today about an interview with Adam Wainwright of the Cards and part of it was about his love of BBQ.  He mentioned a restaurant in St. Louis that serves "Memphis BBQ".  The author of the story said that "Memphis BBQ?" was inferior to KC BBQ, of course.  Now, I've eaten lots of BBQ around the country and not being from KC I have no dog in the hunt.  I've enjoyed Carolina, Memphis, KC and Texas BBQ, as well as some very good BBQ in California, Florida, and even right here in Detroit.  Maybe I am not talking to the right people but the only people that put down other styles of BBQ are KC people.  I really like trying different types of food and in business I learned that you don't put down competitors.  Your product or service stands on its own.  So it's either an inferiority complex or maybe just an inflated sense of self.  I like Arthur Bryants and Gates and Jack Stack but it isn't a religious experience.  I have to say that eating at the Rendezvous in Memphis on a hot evening is an experience.  Same with some Texas places.  

So KC BBQ is good but calling it clearly superior, to me, is a stretch.

Not really. I like most styles, except for tough and gristly ribs. I am fond of the Italian style BBQ, typical of the Smoke Pit here and Barnelli's in Chicago. Seems like I make it to Portillos/Barnellis more than I make it to Smoke Pit lately.
I like Arthur Bryants and Gates and Jack Stack but it isn't a religious experience.
Bryant's and Jack Stack have great ribs! I'm not fond of the ribs at Gates, but their sliced beef is outasite!

Often overlooked is Hayward's way south in Kansas City. It doesn't have that earthy ambiance of the original Bryant's or Gates, but the food is great!

Uncle Ernies was good when it still was around here,  Boyd and Charlies is okay. Parker's Smokehouse is pretty good as well.


For K.C, I like Oklahoma Joe's and Jack Stack. I find Authur Bryant's and Gates to be overrated.

Yeah, that's the location...it was in a bar who's name I can't quite remember right this instance. Uncle Ernies left and focused back west, in Cedar Creek. The sauces were amazing and the ribs were HUGE with little fat. Oh and the sweet potato fries.

I remember sitting inside that location eating lunch one day, and some older guy sits down next to me asking what I thought of the food. Good thing it was good stuff, because that ended up being Ernie, and I wouldn't have wanted to offend him if it I didn't like it.  :)

Had Boxer BBQ recently, and it was definitely my favorite (by a long shot) that I've had in the Omaha area.

Ozark's has the amazing ability to burn or dehydrate any meat product they touch. If I wanted beef jerky, I would eat it. I would rate Famous Daves above that place.

I would like to ask if people had to compare two, would one be so much better that it would be worth driving past one to go to the other.

For example: Heartland vs Doc and Eddies' or Ozark vs Jim's Rib Haven.

It is spelled Harkert's, btw. And Hartland. And of course Ozark.

A bunch of us from work ate at Swine Dining today in Bellevue. For my money, and my experience (I am past president of the Greater Omaha Barbeque Society, for what that may be worth), Swine Dining is the best of a paltry lot in the Omaha metro. Various places do one or two things very good (the onion taters and BBQ sauce at Ozark are top notch, Famous Dave's is pretty consistent, and has great corn bread. Harkert's used to be known for their ribs, but it has changed ownership since my last visit. Heartland has good sandwiches, but the sides aren't very good. Boxer must have something good, but I haven't discovered what that might be.)
Uncle Earnie (John Earnest) is an excellent cook. You can find his food at Taste of Omaha. When he is sober he cannot be beat with his food. (Side story, when I used to be a criminal prosecutor I put John in jail more than once, for his alcohol related problems. But he is a good man, and we grew to be friends.)
For my time and money, L.C's in KC, MO has fantastic burnt ends and sandwiches. BB's Lawnside at 85th & Troost cannot be beat for their combo of Cajun food, BBQ. And Blues music. Oklahoma Joe's never, ever disappoints. Plus you can stock up on BBQ sauces and supplies in their adjacent store. Fiorella's Jack Stack have excellent ribs and brisket, plus killer baked beans. Skip the O rings, though. Gates is good for sandwiches and sauces, but the ribs can be tough. Smokestack at Zona Rosa is a gorgeous place with consistent quality throughout.
Rendezvous is something every BBQ aficionado simply must experience. The food is decent, but the experience of dining there is not to be missed well beyond the quality of the dry rubbed meats.
Stubbs BBQ in Downtown Austin is a winner, though you can find even better Q elsewhere if you look.
Some of my all time favorite BBQ is found in the Carolina's. The vinegar based sauces simply cannot be beat, in my opinion. High Cotton in Kill Devil Hill was a wonderful find. The best BBQ are the little roadside shacks you are apt to come across on the back roads and highways of this big country, particularly south of the Mason-Dixon Line, where BBQ is a passion and a way of life. But I have found exceptional BBQ served from a blue school bus in Vermont, to a transplanted Oklahoman's roadside diner in Seaside, Oregon, to Rudolph's in Minneapolis.

Only time I ever had his food was when he was in that shack on the side of highway 75 on the south shore of the Platte River. That was so long ago, I can't even remember the food now.

Have you ever had the Burnt Ends at Phat Jacks in Lincoln? If so, how do they compare?

I have always wanted to Try Oklahoma Joe's and Gates. Jack Stacks was good.

I have not eaten at Phat Jacks.
Maybe, depending upon how well the EOmaha dinner at Venice Inn goes, we could follow it up with an EOmaha BBQ run some Saturday to KC. Lunch at LC's, and dinner at either Fiorella's or Oklahoma Joes. We could always then swing by Smokestack for take out on our way home. :;):

Accoding to Grow Omaha. The Smoke Pit BBQ will be closing for good on My 25th. They are open Thursday Through Sunday until then.

I can't believe how slim the BBQ Options are in this town.

That's too bad! I really hate to see a great independent place close while we're under invasion from chain after chain after chain.

This place was very unique. The closest place to it (Italian style BBQ) I know of is in Chicago.

Excellent BBQ is part art, part science. And you must have lots of patience. It is very time consuming work, which explains in part why it isn't an inexpensive meal.

Coincidentally I was driving up Farnam by there yesterday morning about 11:45 or so. The line was out the door and way into the parking lot!

Word has got out that they are closing. I can see why they are having issues with enough food. Lots of people in town have been there over the years and are trying to get in there one last time. I'll give them a pass.

I have twice now passed a food truck on North 30th across from Bakers call Fat Shack BBQ. Has anyone tried/seen this place?

Yes,just south of DT Florence. I am not the best judge on BBQ , so I'm waiting for reviews before I try it out.
