It's a shame about Southport, I was just so excited because I live nearby.

In passing, this article stated that earlier this year, Sarpy County officials donated $10,000 to a study on the Southport area as an entertainment district. Only a baby step, but a step closer, nonetheless...

The Outlet mall concept at Southport is officially a dead project. Â I think once new construction started at Nebraska Crossing this was all but a sure thing as far as outlets go. Â

In La Vista, the Southport West outlets, a project spearheaded by Maryland developer Cordish Cos., is officially a no-go. The company that promised a $114 million outlet and entertainment district quietly scrapped the deal after running into problems purchasing land and choosing to focus on other business ventures, including a large casino project in Maryland, La Vista Mayor Doug Kindig said.
But while Cordish officials in 2012 said leases were being signed and design plans drawn up, little on-site work occurred, even as piles were driven and pipes fitted at the Nebraska Crossing site 11 miles away.
Cordish Cos. did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
Kindig now said he regrets going along with the splashy announcement when plans were so tentative.
“Announcements don't mean anything until there's a contract,” he said.

The taste of disappointment. That's what I know.NovakOmaha wrote:I would have put money on Southport before Gretna until I found out that Gretna was a local/national partnership. I doubt that Cordish ever had skin in the game.
Nondescript two story light brick office buildings? Don't tease us. You know something.

I'm not terribly disappointed with this falling through after seeing on how large of a scale NebCrossing is.. Outlet malls have a very specific clientele and having 2 within a relatively close distance would tend to mean one of them would struggle so seeing NebCrossing thrive will be better for the whole area. Also, I really don't see a lack of potential where the Southport Outlet was planned.. it is the fastest growing area of the city after all... and building office buildings down that way is sure to increase demand for housing in that area as well.
I was mainly excited to have Cordish do something here in Omaha because I think they did a splendid job on the Power and Light District in KC; and to have it within walking distance of my house.

I find it hard to look at what a certain company has done in another much larger city and think that there can be any comparisons made.. The P&L district is impressive and I would love having the same thing in Omaha but I think Cordish would have given us something very similar to NebCrossing since there is a certain style to Outlet malls and its not very impressive..
I guess the only perspective on outlet malls I have personally would be La Zona Rosa in KC. I thought it was a really nice place. Super suburban, considering it's a stone's throw from being in the middle of nowhere but rather pleasant.guitarguy wrote:I find it hard to look at what a certain company has done in another much larger city and think that there can be any comparisons made.. I agree, I visited Zona Rosa last summer and thought they did a great job of incorporating the shopping and restuarants to make it a pedestrian friendly area. Unlike Village Pointe and Shadow Lake, they didn't have large massive parking lots breaking up the cohesiveness of the retail and dining establishments. There were a few smaller parking lots and a parking garage. I like the inner ring of Shadow Lake, but the outer area feels like nothing more than a strip mall.

Five years ago we had big expectations of outlets and entertainment venues by Cordish that ought to have been here by now. It would just be interesting to see our reaction at the discovery it never happened.Garrett wrote:Wouldn't we basically see the same thing?RNcyanide wrote:How great would it be if us five years ago could see these pictures?

Re: Southport (126th - Giles - I80)
As to a business park one thing did happen that impacted this area. Aksarben Village. I'm a business owner and I call a realtor to inquire about available space. He says he's got a couple of areas on which to build, AV and Southport. I jump in the family truckster and drive to both to take a look. Do I want to locate in a mixed use area in the city with great access or in next to Paypal near not much with great access? The companies that located in AV voted with their feet and money. It's great that Paypal chose Omaha but imagine them locating somewhere else in Omaha, like downtown, AV, a renovated Old Mill, etc. That's a ton of employees.
Re: Southport (126th - Giles - I80)
PayPal wanted a suburban campus, so downtown/AV never would have been considered. Old Mill likely would not have been either, but of the ones mentioned would have been the closest possibility.NovakOmaha wrote:As to a business park one thing did happen that impacted this area. I know they wanted suburban, although their predecessor, X.com, was located in the 11128 John Galt Blvd building. I was simply saying imagine what may have been had they located somewhere "sexier".NEDodger wrote:PayPal wanted a suburban campus, so downtown/AV never would have been considered. If there is room for a second Sam's (third if you count CB) in the metro there is room for two Costco's for sure.

I was excited for the entertainment district of bars and condo's. Now it just seems that they are trying to fill it up with whatever they can so they can pay for Vision 84. I really have hate their 8% sales tax and will drive past their Runza/Jimmy John's and get my food 3 miles down the road.

The food at Runza has went way down hill over the years but if you have to do Runza then that one in La Vista is a good choice. Its very clean and not to crowded.Trips wrote:I was excited for the entertainment district of bars and condo's. I don't think the Runza sandwiches are as qood as they once were, but they still have one of the best Fast Food Drive Through Cheese Burgers in town.GRANDPASMUCKER wrote:The food at Runza has went way down hill over the years but if you have to do Runza then that one in La Vista is a good choice.
