2014-2015 Winter Weather Thread

Post by Coyote »

I guess I missed this for the past two years, but this will be the third season that winter storms will receive names (from The Weather Channel) with this first one: Winter Storm Astro. This Polar Vortex may not reach Nebraska, but by 5 pm we may just get some nice winds today...

I can't decide. Either the names have not caught on, or we (Omaha area) have not received a bad enough storm to remember a name yet.

I think if the October 97 Snow Storm or the Christmas 2010 Storm had a name we may remember them.

Wasn't Christmas 2009 the bad year? I didn't live here then but I remember driving home for Christmas and losing count of how many cars were off the road on I-80 between Des Moines and Omaha.

Are the talking heads on TV going to call every cold front a polar vortex from now on?

Thanks for the picture bugeater. I remember thinking that was the most snow I can remember seeing in the area since I was born in 1983. I had never seen all the mailboxes on the sides of streets completely covered with snow before. I know it has happened but I don't remember seeing it.

I know people think I am crazy, but I really like the snow. I wish it was more of the nice soft winter wonderland snow and not this ice mixture, but its still part of the fun of living in the Midwest. I really do like having 4 seasons and about the time I am sick of one, we are on to the next.

For everything there is a season. And this ain't the season for this sort of weather. It is normally in the 50s in mid November.

Lol, the Weather Channel is calling this storm in Buffalo the "Arctic Attack".

That said, the photos rolling in are amazing!

Winter Storm Juno is expected to dump 2-3 feet of snow up east. Meanwhile, we hit the 50's today and maybe the 60's on Wednesday!

I was looking at the Weather Channel's website and all the pictures are from New York City, like they suffered terribly. They got less than 10 inches of snow....I think they will be alright. I was surprised to see that they didn't have many pictures of the Boston area on there.

My step daughter lives in Quincy MA. She said there was about 25 inches of snow in her neighborhood.

My brother lives in North Andover and they got around 30 inches on top of the 6 they had last Saturday. Can't imagine where they are going to put all that.

Blasting on Platte is called off
NICHOLAS BERGIN: LINCOLN JOURNAL wrote:Warm, sunny weather over the past few days broke up the nearly mile-long jam and sent giant chunks floating down the Platte toward the Missouri River, officials said Thursday morning.

They'll continue to monitor the situation just to be sure, but it looks like the services of Dykon Blasting Corp. of Tulsa, Oklahoma, won't be needed.

And I guess this winter storm that just left was called Linus.
I didn't think much of it on Saturday Morning, but by Saturday night when they decided not to pre-treat the streets because the chemicals would just rain away... I figured that the heavy wet snow would turn to slush then to ice... It almost seemed like the city was caught of guard by this type of storm, on a Super Bowl weekend no less. I know that some neighborhood roads are still pretty much iced over, and maybe for a few days yet...

Couple of the news stations have released their mandatory annual story stating that landscaping businesses are seeing an increase in snow removal demand.
