Paypal will be adding a new building near their existing building.

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_pg=46&u_sid=2049030
PayPal, an Internet payments system, expects to add about 600 new jobs next year. Less than two years ago, the company built a Sarpy County operations center for 1,200 people, which it already has outgrown. PayPal has 1,400 Omaha-area workers. The second building would more than double its space.

Construction of the two-story building will begin this year and be completed in the second half of 2006, said Sara Bettencourt, a spokeswoman at the San Jose, Calif., PayPal headquarters.

PayPal to Expand Operations Facility in La Vista

SAN JOSE, Calif. & OMAHA, Neb.--(BUSINESS WIRE)----PayPal today announced plans to expand its La Vista, Neb. operations center, adding a new building in La Vista's Southport East Business Park. The new building is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2006 and will total more than 125,000 square feet.

"PayPal has experienced phenomenal growth since we opened our doors just a few years ago, and our team in La Vista continues to expand to support this growth," said Ryan Downs, vice president of worldwide operations for PayPal. "With its highly skilled and diverse workforce, it's clear that the Omaha area is a great home for PayPal, and we're proud to support the continued growth of our local community."

"I could not be happier for our state or for the future of the knowledge-based economy in Nebraska," Gov. Dave Heineman said. "PayPal is a wonderful corporate citizen and a model of the innovative companies we're helping to grow with the Nebraska Advantage jobs-creation package. This is extraordinary news."

Located at the intersection of 126th Street and I-80, PayPal's current facility opened in 2003 with about 500 employees. Today, PayPal has grown to well over 1,000 employees in La Vista dedicated to PayPal's customer service, risk operations, payment processing and sales. PayPal is planning to add about 600 additional employees in La Vista in the next year, including merchant support specialists, risk management experts, and experienced sales agents.

"PayPal's growth in Omaha is a great example of the collaborative effort between the public and private sectors in Nebraska," said Mike Fahey, Mayor of Omaha. "We're proud that PayPal recognizes the advantages of living and working in Greater Omaha, and we congratulate them on this bold expansion and investment in our community."

La Vista Mayor Harold Anderson said, "PayPal is a great corporate citizen, and we are absolutely delighted that they chose to expand in La Vista."

David Brown, president of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, added, "When PayPal staked its claim in Omaha nearly five years ago, the company made a strong statement about its commitment to our community. Today's announcement puts a major exclamation point on that statement, as PayPal's new project significantly expands its Omaha campus."

PayPal will work closely with the City of La Vista, the Sarpy County Economic Development Corporation, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, real estate developer The Lund Company, building designer and general contractor Workstage, and other local contractors to complete construction.

PayPal was recently named one of the top five best places to work in Omaha for 2005, by the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce.

My sister's boyfriend worked there last year in the Security Fraud department. He said he was well paid for the position - but not for his own level of proficiency. (i.e. he took the job because he needed it - not because he wanted it)

That's probably one of their higher paying jobs. Most of them I would guess are call center positions, aka inbound telemarketing.

On the plus side, any time you add several hundred jobs of any kind to the economy, it is going to create a demand for other more skilled jobs at the same time to support them. Stuff like doctors, dentists, insurance agents, air conditioning service people, etc, etc, not to mention all the construction jobs to build apartments and homes to house these people.

I just hope we can provide enough people to fill all of these new positions. Just think if the metro gets that military financial center, that will be another several hundred jobs. We need to start getting the word out to the rest of the world that there are a lot of openings in Omaha!

Not sure how much spendable income people who have these call center jobs are going to have buy/pay for 'extras".

And they've all hit as American workers are seeing their most sluggish wage growth in decades.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data suggest inflation this year is growing at more than double the rate of wage earners' pay. This year's drop in real wages is on pace to be the biggest American workers have confronted since 1980.

PayPal jobs

Post by Scuzz »

First, PayPal pays a pretty damn good wage when compared to other high-level telemarketing jobs in Omaha. The starting wage for entry-level customer service is $12.00/hour, but they also give stock options, bonuses, etc. Since they offer unlimited overtime almost year-round, it isn't difficult for people to make over $40,000/year. I know that a lot of entry-level positions at Mutual or UP pay less than this (salaried) per year, plus you always have the threat of meeting sales targets, or the risk of a layoff.

It shocks me after how much time PayPal has been in Omaha and how much they have grown (btw - the press releases underestimate their number of employees - it is much more like 2K in Omaha) how little we talk about them when we speak about the big companies of Omaha. I don't know many companies that have been able to quadruple their operation size in Omaha in the past three years. I really wish I could find a way to get on with their company, as many of my friends work there and only have good things to say about the place. Believe you me, PayPal is really one of the best companies in this market for an employee.

The actually moved some of their professional employees home. Two people I know from PayPal will both be working from home in the near future to make room for more call center employees in the current buildings.

It sounds like Paypal will need to expand. The problem they have is that they need people to fill those jobs. They are having troubles finding those individuals in Omaha. I can see them expanding their Chandler Arizona location. Who knows, two years from now we could be talking about Paypal a Google company or Paypal an Alibaba company.

Sounds like a bunch of layoffs started today at Paypal. I know it happened to a friend that's been there almost 10 years. He said many others as well.

Ebay had announced in January they were going to cut 2,400 jobs in both the Ebay and Paypal.

PayPal hosting a job fair now. Sounds like they wanted to turn over some expensive labor for inexpensive new workers.

I would guess that was not the primary motivation. The company is restructuring with the split from eBay, so there were bound to be newly unnecessary positions as well as new demand for other positions.

I wonder if the newly-jobless Yahoo employees will find work here now?

Maybe instead of paying for their own shuttle they could work with Metro and spend that money developing a route that the whole city as well as their employees could use.

While I don't follow Metro too closely... I would have thought the same, until they pursued/landed this TIGER funding for the BRT.

Paying people through PayPal just got a bit easier.

The company rolled out another person-to person-payments service Tuesday: PayPal.Me, a barebones payments app that uses a URL to allow people to collect and send money to people they know.

On Tuesday, PayPal CEO and president Dan Schulman announced that the electronic payment company was withdrawing its plans to build an operations center in the state because the new law perpetuates discrimination and violates the values and principles that he said are at the core of PayPal’s mission and culture.

"This decision reflects PayPal’s deepest values and our strong belief that every person has the right to be treated equally, and with dignity and respect. These principles of fairness, inclusion and equality are at the heart of everything we seek to achieve and stand for as a company. And they compel us to take action to oppose discrimination," Schulman said in a statement.
Didn't quote it, but this was a 400 job project in Charlotte that they backed out of.

The gay marriage thing could have been solved in a better way. Had we simply moved marriages into a civil contract, we could have regulated the contract by requiring adults only (adults can sign contracts, minors can't), and the gender of the signees would have no bearing as the requirement to sign would be willingness to be a spouse and ability to be one. If the state defines marriage as a spousal arrangement, then being in one would prevent you from being in more than one. Thus gays get married. Religious people live in peace with it as their status' don't conflict. All the concerns about plural marriage or pederasty would be avoidable.

The people in NC who support this (and there must be more than a few) are likely feeling pushed up against the wall given the legal slam downs that have been aimed at people who don't support gay marriage elsewhere. While I am fine with gay marriage, the reaction of the gay marriage groups to specifically Christians who don't is really quite appalling, especially when they seem quite OK with Muslims refusing to sell gay marriage wedding cakes.

If Gays think bashing Christians in court is their right, then it should not be shocking that Christians would choose the legislative route to fight back.

Paypal has the right to do this, but they should recognize that at least part of motivation in NC is concern that the politicization of the bench tends to lead to these sort of laws and that maybe a more nuanced position should be taken. After all their own statement above says they believe in fairness for all people. A private business's right to do a certain kind of business should not be determined by whether the owners read a Bible or a Koran.

I think the only reason Christians are being targeted so much is because they are being very vocal about their bigotry. And it's good they are suffering consequences for it. It's the only way they will learn.

Why is the choice to decline business, by default seen as bigotry? Or is calling you out on this use of a word grenade is the only way you will learn?
