Showing our inexperience?

http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/11 ... acceptable
Lightweight titleholder Terence Crawford's thrilling ninth-round knockout of Yuriorkis Gamboa on Saturday night was everything that is right about boxing: Two highly skilled, undefeated combatants, a great fight waged at the highest level and a passionate crowd.

If only the card was regulated like an elite event rather than like a small-potato club show.

In this day and age of rampant abuse of performance-enhancing drugs in all sports, it is expected that even the most basic urine drug testing be conducted in relation to a fight card. At the very least, the fighters in the world title main event should be tested and oftentimes the fighters go above and beyond commission-ordered testing by engaging in more stringent random blood and urine testing under the supervision of organizations such as VADA and USADA.

But, shockingly, neither fighter was tested in any way, shape or form on Saturday night. On top of that, representatives from both the Crawford and Gamboa camps told ESPN.com that they were told they would have urine samples collected after the fight but that nobody from the commission ever came to collect them.

What do you mean "our" inexperience? This fight was put on by some company called Top Rank, I believe. And they run these fights all over the place including Vegas.

According to the rules of the Nebraska State Athletic Commission, contestants do not have to be tested. Chapter 1, rule 001.17 clearly states, "The commissioner or inspector supervising the match may order anti-doping exams, whenever considered necessary, before of after a contest."

Brian Dunn, the deputy athletic commissioner in Nebraska, told ESPN.com by email on Wednesday that the commission did not test because nobody from the WBO asked for it -- even though Duggan said the WBO did suggest it and that the commission was well within its rights to test on its own.

"In Nebraska, every contestant is subject to random drug testing, but we do not have a policy that requires certain competitors be tested," Dunn said. "We are, of course, willing to test any athlete at the request of organizations, but no particular testing was requested from the WBO. Neither boxer was told that they would be tested after the bout, at least not by my staff. I am sorry to hear they were waiting."

Told that both fighter camps said that they had been told they would be tested, Dunn wrote, "Again, I am sorry those guys waited. I think maybe Mr. Duggan assumed we would test and, by all rights, maybe we should have tested. We never spoke about testing, but I will make sure to at least discuss [it] with the sanctioning organization supervisor in the future."

That's what I'm saying, I feel this is more the Top Rank and WBO's fault. They were the ones putting on this fight.

Crawford to Defend Title(Again)

Post by iamjacobm »

http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post ... fend-title
Lightweight titleholder Terence Crawford's second defense is penciled in for Nov. 29 (HBO) at the CenturyLink Center in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, likely against top contender Raymundo Beltran (29-6-1, 17 KOs) of Mexico. That is the same arena where Crawford (24-0, 17 KOs) put on a dazzling performance in his first defense on June 28 by knocking out previously unbeaten Yuriorkis Gamboa.

"It's Thanksgiving weekend and we have the building on hold," Arum said. "HBO loves the fight."

I have to think prices are going to go up. They also might need to open up more than 12K seats.

I agree, but I wonder who's decision this will be. Arum gave in to Crawford's demands and gave the first title defense to Omaha, but even though his health kept him from being here in person, you would have to believe he was dumb struck by the atmosphere Omaha brought to the CLink. Now that it's coming back, you know he wants to make up his money.

If the prices go back to normal for a defense fight, how many here will pay those prices, and will that keep the arena seating at 9-10k?

Its official.

http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/11 ... do-beltran
After lightweight titleholder Terence Crawford thrilled his hometown fans in Omaha, Nebraska, with a ninth-round knockout of then-undefeated former featherweight titlist Yuriorkis Gamboa in June, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum vowed that he would bring Crawford back for his next fight.

That is exactly what Arum is doing. Crawford will make his second title defense at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, the same arena where he knocked out Gamboa, when he takes on mandatory challenger Raymundo Beltran on Nov. 29 (HBO).

"After the way the people of Omaha responded to the June fight, there is a hunger now there for boxing, especially for Terence Crawford," Arum told ESPN.com. "We had over 10,000 for the fight in June and we'll have another big crowd for this fight.

“In just the four hours of being on sale, we are close to selling out the ringside seats and the next highest priced tier tickets sales are not too far behind that,” said Hall of Fame Promoter Bob Arum. “Terence’s fans are taking no chances on missing the opportunity of seeing their world champion defend his title live. The atmosphere on fight night is going to be even more electric than his last fight!”

Promoted by Top Rank remaining tickets to the Crawford vs. Beltran world lightweight championship event, priced at $127, $77 and $52 and $27, are available for purchase at the CenturyLink Center Omaha box office and all Ticketmaster outlets.

Some talks of a Crawford-Pacquiao fight out there. Not a chance in heck that is in Omaha, but still would be an awesome opportunity for Crawford.

Saw a claim that the reason it wasn't in Omaha was b/c there wasn't an indoor venue available. Anyways...

This was a show of dominance. Crawford is really making his name known now, only a matter of time until he is a star.

Edit: Crawford v. Matthysse would be epic.

Looks like Crawford will get another fight in Omaha this year! Bob Arum recently said:

“HBO is happy to have Terence Crawford on twice a year, but Terence Crawford should fight more that twice a year, he's going to fight in October or November, and we want him to fight in Omaha, so we have to match the date HBO gives us with the availability of the arena in Omaha. Then, starting next year he will fight three times a year.”

When 2014 fighter of the year and junior welterweight titlist Terence Crawford (26-0, 18 KOs) returns this fall there are two possible dates under discussion between HBO and Top Rank: Oct. 24 and Nov. 7. Top Rank would like to put on the fight in Crawford’s hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. There is no set opponent but among the names being tossed around are Antonio Orozco (22-0, 15 KOs), Mauricio Herrera (22-5, 7 KOs) -- as long as the cuts he suffered in his win against Hank Lundy last Saturday are healed -- and Cesar Cuenca (47-0, 2 KOs), for a title unification fight as long as he wins the vacant belt he will fight Ik Yang for on Saturday in Macau, China.
