I noticed Holly McCarthy hasn't been on for the past couple of weekends. I had just figured she was on vacation, but I guess not. Hmmmm

Saw her on the news this weekend. Must have been on vacation. They should now update their weather promos to include her otherwise people may continue to think that she is no longer with them.
Re: Omaha Local News Channels
Anyone catch Erin Murray at 6pm? I think she was hammered! WOWT also shared a facebook video about an hour ago where she is dancing on the 480 bridge.

I believe that on their Facebook page a little less than a week ago they said she was moving on. It was her last day or going to be if I remember what I read.

Good for her. She always seemed like a more serious meteorologist. Edmund is a nice part of the OKC metro.Brad wrote:Holly McCarthy went to work with the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK.nebugeater wrote: I believe that on their Facebook page a little less than a week ago they said she was moving on. I can't tell you how much I absolutely hate the "selfie live report". Professional news outlets should have tripods that keep the camera still and not all this sea-sick selfie |expletive|...

They're going after the hipster demographic that really won't watch the 4/5/6/10 under any circumstance.Brad wrote:I can't tell you how much I absolutely hate the "selfie live report". Either that. or they're cheap. :-)
Re: Omaha Local News Channels
They are a frickin news station, they probably have a coupe dozen tripods laying around the station. so it wouldn't cost them anything. Even if they didn't have a tripod, I am sure the news stations order Gaffer's Tape by the case, tape your damn phone to a light pole...
I agree, I'm sure they are trying to be hip or whatever, but it just makes them look stupid!
I can't wait until this era of Photography and Video are over and we can get back to a time where quality means something...

My wife and I saw that 6th grade news thing....not sure what all that was about but it did do a pretty accurate representation of the local news.

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
Jennifer Zeppelin is the new WX person, making her Channel Third's fifth meteorologist. Since I like to pretend I'm a stormchaser, I follow the media outlets in Tornado Alley and I'm familiar with her. She started on the 4PM show Friday and she'll be just fine.

Re: Omaha Local News Channels - History
When I was in Jr. High my Dad was a fan of ABC news with David Brinkley and Peter Jennings so we watched the ABC local station. Of course, most families only had 1 or 2 Main TV's in their homes, so we watched what our Dad wanted to watch. One of the draws for me to watch the news was Mike May's outlandish outfits and silliness and Lee Terry Sr.'s seriousness. My family left Omaha right after the 1975 Tornado, so I lost track of the local Omaha ABC Station. Since I moved back to the Omaha area with my own family, I began looking up the history of that original Broadcasting Team that drew me into the news. I watched Lee Terry Sr. on Sundays' talk show but I can't seem to find any history on Mike May. Can anyone help me? When did he leave the station? Where did he go? Did anyone document the various skits he did that drew the younger crowd in?
Re: Omaha Local News Channels
Mike May was in the Earl May family which originally owned KMTV, KMA and KFAB.
I don't know much else, this is all memories from my stint at the ad agency shortly after I moved to Omaha.

Re: Omaha Local News Channels - History
I took a tour of channel 7 while in the cub scouts in the early 70's. We got to see Mike May do a live telecast of "Dialing For Dollars." He was a slickster and a real ladies man! I believe he was a part owner of the 20's Night Club back in the 70's and 80's.msGeek2k wrote:When I was in Jr. High my Dad was a fan of ABC news with David Brinkley and Peter Jennings so we watched the ABC local station. Re: Omaha Local News Channels
I'm remembering a few more (not many LOL) details.
Mike May was always jokingly being compared to Ted Baxter of MTM fame. IIRC his reputation was along the line of kind of a goofball.
Back in the 70s local TV newscasts mostly lost any serious journalistic integrity that they once had. "Happy Talk" became in vogue. It was more entertainment than hard news.
For weathercasting they would then have either a "weather twinkie" or a "weather clown" and Mike May was the latter. These people knew about as much about weather observation and meteorology as the average houseplant but their job was basically to "rip n read" in an entertaining manner.
There is a "rest of the story" but the details are buried in 30 some years of foggy brain cells. I believe Mike May was replaced by a "twinkie" and it may have been the rather ugly incident where one "twinkie" jumped ship from one station to another with lawsuits over non-compete clauses and such.
Most of this should be fairly accurate.

Trust me, as a boy going through puberty, the advent of weather babes was big news then.Omababe wrote:I'm remembering a few more (not many LOL) details.

Donna Meyer was the woman who replaced Mike May. She was on KMTV, and May made fun of her mercilessly. She was a classic weather babe, just a cute petite blonde with a squeaky voice who was cute in front of the weather map. KETV saw that she was gaining in popularity and they dumped Mike May for her. KMTV responded by hiring Carol Scott. Tall, brunette, and rather pleasingly 3 dimensional. She could stand in front of Wyoming, and cover Iowa. Donna Meyer was soon eclipsed, and left for other ventures.
The nice thing about Scott, was that while she was also not a real meterologist, she was rather intelligent and had more gravitas on the air. She married into the Manheim Steamroller group (Chip Davis) and did his cover art for his best work (Fresh Aire 3). She is also in the cover. Divorced Chip Davis and went into photography full time after that.

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
Carol Scott was also the last of the weather babes as the trend changed when everyone else in Tornado alley had real weather people and we didn't. People wanted actual forecasts and radar. You had to have on air talent that knew how to read the radar, and the real meteorologists became the norm.
Re: Omaha Local News Channels
I didn't have an option above for me. I have the KETV app which I use to periodically check the forecast and news. I also get alerts to many local things from traffic to press conferences that I watch live on my phone.

She was running a outdoor-clothing company up to about ten years ago. The website had a photo of her--same hair, just gray. Native American dangly earrings, leather jacket, huge-|expletive| dog alongside her.bigredmed wrote:

She contracted MS, I believe, and soon after, the site went 404.
Re: Omaha Local News Channels
Back in July, I switched from Dish to Time Warner. When I was with Dish, I got the Omaha stations, but not the Lincoln ones. Now I'm with Time Warner and I have the Lincoln stations, and some of the Omaha ones. KMTV is not on the lineup. WOWT and KPTM are not in HD. And WOWT is on Channel 83 instead of 6, like it should be. That's kind of odd.
If I were to switch back to Dish, would I get the Omaha stations again like I did before or just the Lincoln ones?

I believe it would be like it used to be. If there is a change it would be for everyone. I do not think you can be "grandfathers" in to other locals. I also know that the DISH web site had a place where by entering your ZIP you would get all the locals for your area. May want to see if that is still there.

Am I the only one outraged to read in the paper and hear on local news how we are going to have a blizzard Tuesday and I better stock up on groceries. What a load. These idiots don't know and are crying wolf big time for this one. Guess this means every ding bat & her daughter in town will be making a run on the grocery stores today.

Everyone has been joking about it. ( with the exception of the TV meteorologists) It is timely.

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
I saw that WOWT was in full on weather freakout mode last night...roughly 24 hours before the first snowflake was forecast to fall with graphics covering 1/3 of the screen and a radar screen on the lefthand side showing...nothing.
WOWT is easily the worst in Omaha when it comes to weather graphics overkill. I'm glad I don't watch any NBC shows at this point because it's an all out assault on the senses. They have graphics on the left side, a scroll on the bottom o f the screen and a "weather alert" on the top right.
Half the time when they go into weather freakout mode during the summer it's for flash flood watches in places like Mound City.
Just horrible.

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
This is without a doubt the most hyped up snow storm in the last 50 years in Omaha. This is totally unprecedented territory folks. We never have seen anything even close to this in Omaha. It is either total un called for over kill and hysteria or they are pretty smart. The odds are not in their favor and they are going to look like fools 24 hours from now. I cant remember the mayor ever getting up on TV in front of the whole city and saying "We got a big storm coming kids but we can handle it now drive safely." Poor Mayor Stothert. Last week she had to speak at a dogs funeral and now this.
Re: Omaha Local News Channels
Oh yes. Cheryl Donnermeyer BKA Donna Meyer (may have been Sheryl, maybe even Sharon). I remember the name well. IIAC she never worked in this market again.bigredmed wrote:Donna Meyer was the woman who replaced Mike May.

KETV Channel 7 (No Cable/Dish)
I can't stand Matt Lauer, so I avoid channel 6 at all costs in the morning.

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
Doesn't it seem odd that Omaha has 2 stations whose call letters are K_TV? KMTV and KETV. Why is that?
