2016-2017 Winter Storms

Post by Brad »

Not necessarily a winter storm, but we could see our first wet snowflakes of the season on Friday morning. A dusting of snow as close as Columbus.

If you see the map on social media that says 12"-14" of snow for Omaha and 24"-40" for Iowa... That's what rusty is taking about.

Someone at work told me today they had heard we were going to get 12" and I didn't think that sounded right.

I was following the storm that started on Saturday pretty closely. The NWS was expecting less than an inch of snow in Omaha, but it turns out we got more than 2".

Looks like our first real taste of winter is coming Tuesday, with high temperatures below freezing forecast for the rest of the week.

One advantage of having the first snowfall of the season on a Saturday is (so far, at least, knocking on wood) is that everybody has gotten it out of their systems and so far we haven't had the yearly ritual of the tall tales of how people risked live, limb, and fender, to make it in. Nobody seems to be partaking in that oh-so-common pastime so far this morning. :)

I saw a fresh pass of brine on the roads in my neighborhood tonight. Why would they lay more down if there is no snow forecast for several days?

Snow / freezing participation is forecast for the next few days at any time. Freezing pellets were comming down here in Gretna about an hour ago.

Oh. NWS forecast didn't mention a thing. Guess I need to start watching local weather.

Ice, I think there's enough brine on the streets to keep us safe for a year at least.

Super moon sounds sexier than perihelion moon. But I think the naming of the storms plays better in the social psyche even as campy as it may be. If it can save a life because it gets retweeted more then it's Worth it.

While I agree with "polar vortex" and "super moons" as being media hype, I part with you on Winter Storm names.
As with Tropical Depressions being alphabetically named because of an unique low pressure cell that has a life of its own during a given season, we have an unique atmospheric occurance during this winter season that has its own life. We missed Iras which had a life that began in California, causing floods and mudslides, and downed majestic trees, before moving just north of Omaha, the next Atmospheric Phenonema is about to wreak havoc to Kansas City and beyond.... shall we call it the Winter Storm of January 2017? The third Winter Storm of 2017...? It has a life of its own.

I don't know... May be I am old school... I think of the "October 97 Storm" or the "Blizzard of 75". Kind of like the "Tornado of 75" or the "Easter Tornado of 23".

Winter Storm Iris or Winter Storm Jupiter just doesn't do it for me. The obsession these days of labeling everything just doesn't have the same effect as names that come natural. I know a pre planned name makes it easier for social media and everything, but it just doesn't feel authentic.

When I show my kids the photo below of me at "Pioneer Cabin" in Big Trees State Park, I'm not going to say that "Winter Storm Iris" or whatever took the tree down. However when I talk about the October 97 storm, it just feels right.

The big bad ice storm so far as of 2:30 PM Sunday is a BIG DUD. I talked to a friend of mine down in Kansas City about 1PM and he said its a BIG DUD down there to. He said they had Chiefs tickets flying around the past 2 days for under 50 bucks and there were still 8000 unsold seats last night. Talked to another guy I know in Oklahoma City and he said the storm had been heavily over hyped for days there.

At these temps, ice is easily controlled by salt. Travel conditions may worsen when the sun goes down.

MeanStreets reported that public works is saying over the scanner that pavement temperature is like 32.7 degrees. Road conditions may get bad soon depending on treatment status and if any salt has washed into the storm drain.

I think we really lucked out, Ice storms are nothing to mess with. Days with out power and catastrophic damage to trees is nothing I want to see around here. We were really only a degree or two away from getting it too.

I agree whole-heartedly. I have a neighbor whose silver maple looms over my drive way, so I'm glad it didn't come down. But there was quite the hubbub, and too many cancellations today from yesterday afternoon for weather that didn't turn out to be much of anything here.

The storm wasn't a bust; conditions were just favorable. Temperature stayed close to freezing for most of the day and the wind was calm. Roads are easy to treat with those variables.

If it was freezing rain followed by a severe temperature drop and strong winds, things would be different.

I took me 1:20 to go from Capehart and Hwy 75 to Aksarben Village. Normally it takes 20 min. By the way, I only saw 1 plow and it was headed southbound on 75.

TO play devils advocate.

What should they have done different?

The bulk of the snow came right before or at the AM rush.
The plows were out or at least that is the fact that heard and believe
The plows will move slower too because of the traffic.
It was colder than projected to the pre-treatment and the treatment during the storm was not as effective and took longer to work.

The craziest posturing I heard was Mellow chastising the mayor for being out of town. Crazy. The city does not run on one person alone and last I checked she does not drive a plow or salt truck anyway. What would have been different if she was in town. My understanding is she was on a persoaln trip. I hope Mellow has never taken a personal trip away from his work. Not sure how that is supposed to work and it she should be here for every storm who's forecast do you follow and how are going to predict the next tornado so the mayor is in town, never mind letting the general population know a few days in advance so they can be prepared too.

This is 100% correct. People seem to have an very unrealistic expectation of snow removal.

This weekend's forecast that called for measurable snow in Eastern Nebraska, which then shifted West, and subsequently disintegrated for the most part shows how volatile some weather systems are.
