Dollar Tree is buying Family Dollar. They have the shell of the new Family Dollar store built now near the southeast corner of 72nd & Blondo. Guess they'll have to change the color of the cheesy looking red awnings to green. That has to be the most flimsy looking metal siding they slapped on that building. Not much thicker or flatter than heavy duty aluminum foil. Maybe they won't even finish it and they'll put something else there....one can hope.

As a 28 year old life long resident of that area, it was extremely disappointing to find out a Family Dollar was being built in that location. I still miss Baker's lol.

A NY Times article said they still plan to keep the Family Dollar brand in addition to Dollar Tree, so it looks like we may be stuck with the building that has already been started. No "progress" has been made on the building for a couple of weeks, so I thought maybe it would become a Dollar Tree instead. The lull is probably caused by normal delays mobilizing the different construction crews/trades. Hopefully Omaha's landscaping requirements will help hide the building a bit.

I lived in the neighborhood for 20 years and still have to drive by it everyday on the way to work, so I was hoping for something better. Oh well.

I'm glad someone else agrees with my earlier assessment. It's not even worth taking a lousy drive-by phone pic of it, or the subsequent mouse click of our fellow eomahaforum readers!

It looks like they are putting brick on it so it may not end up looking that bad after all.

Well I couldn't for the life of me understand how they could erect that ugly box it is now and call it good. Here's hoping the brickwork covers up the ugly parts!

Guess my expectations were set too low. If they brick-up the whole thing, it may not end up looking that bad. The original Bakers at that location wasn't exactly a gem either, but was more useful to have in the neighborhood.

Anyone know what type of building is planned, and what function it might serve? Looks like PDM is just a property management company.

Yeah I am sure they will close the one just north of there on the west side of 72nd. The one down by Baker's and Home Depot will stay.

DarmCo owns the one on Lake St. So I wonder if they are the ones behind the Blondo build.

I think this will be a nice location for them. Should be easier access, on the major intersection with much more visibility then the Lake street location.

I would bet so, the existing location is one of the oldest models of McD's you'll still see around.

The Lake St. location is the oldest of Darmco's 11 McDonald's, they have talked about a rebuild...

Might be old, but it seems like they keep it up really nice inside. Better than a lot of Fast Food restaurants.

108th & Emmet is next oldest. I think it was a few years old when I worked there in 1987/88.

I'm so glad that tightly-squeezed Baker's is gone there. It almost made me uncomfortable, the store & parking lot was so tight. I do like the new lots (with much smaller businesses) filling in. The corners of 72nd & Blondo & Maple seem like they are freshening-up and getting brighter.
I can get pushed out because I'm "too much" for some. Then, an observer of me comes suddenly swooping in to "fill my shoes." People are always more accepting of the new one, because their feathers aren't truly ruffled by them. (Yawn) I can count on it every time.

I don't know how these gas station planners do it. A big gas station was the last thing I thought that corner needed, and yet, I have found it quite convenient. Same with the Bucky's on Dodge and the one in Benson. Never wouldda thought.

Now, that McDonald's has been the best McDonald's in my neck of the woods for quite some time. It will be interesting to see how Burger King will respond with a new McDonald's right across the street. That BK is also the better one in my area, so hopefully they respond positively.

I can see that. I live north of 156th and Fort. About 10 years ago they had planned a Bucky's on the southwest corrner. Never happened. Can't tell you how much I wished they had. For short little trips or to get gas for the lawnmower that would be so handy. Always have to go to the Hy Vee station at 156th and Maple or Kum and Go further west.

It goes to show that ownership and management's willingness to maintain a restaurant sometimes trumps age. Rebuilds and remodels don't help business if the place isn't kept clean.

Give me a Bucky's anyday. Love that gas station. Having a fun name, they are clean & spacious inside and offer a lot. They also have thoughtful, eye-catching design on the exterior -- especially the newer ones.

Is that McDonalds there that great? I'll have to stop in there sometime. Want to visit a McDonalds with the original crosshatch tile floors? Visit the one on 108th & Maple.
