I think we'll be in that range (just a rough estimate of my own, based on quoted, unofficial numbers I've heard in the past) when all of these condominium projects are seen to completion, Riverfront Place and Wallstreet Tower included.

It would be nice if Downtown Omaha, Inc, the city of Omaha, Omaha realtors, or some organization would do a little census of their own so we had a somewhat official number to begin marketing.

Our DT population is pretty good for our size and how little attention it recieved before now. I think it is somewhere between 7,000-8,000. I think projected it's supposed to be around 10,000 by 2010 from what I've read.

A few cities DT Pops. I know for comparison

Tulsa- 2,000
Cinncinnati- Metro 2,000,000 DT- 3,000

No..The DSM DT population is about 5000..

As was stated previously, Omaha's downtown population is probably somewhere between 7000-8000..It should be around 10,000 by the 2010 census..

Huh, our metro pops are both about 100X our DT pops. I'm still having a hard time believing DTDM is that much. Maybe they use that 20 mile loop as they do with their work force.

According to my calculations there are approximately 14,500 people living in and near downtown Omaha. This is an estimate which is includes everything east of about 30th street, north of the railroad tracks (most of Little Italy is included) and south of Cuming. Unfortunately due to the boundaries of the census tracts I was unable to include anything north of Dodge and east of 10th street. These numbers are based on the 2010 US Census.

Census
Tract People
16 2,577
18 3,970
19 1,178
22 1,245
39 2,859
40 2,731
14,560 Total

I would think that since 2010 that number has risen with all the recently completed and renovated apartment buildings downtown.

Using the same census tracts you used, here's what I found for 2012, the most recent year available.

Tract People
16 2,351
18 3,442
19 1,276
22 1,129
39 2,888
40 2,951
14,037 Total

However, each one also has a margin of error, so accounting for that puts the total as high as 16,193.

Also it isn't uncommon for young renters to still get counted where their parents live. It would be nice if the city or chamber could get a well defined number of residents in order to market the downtown area better to retailers.

Are there updated estimates by zip code? Tons of apartments have come online since 2012, I would expect a sizeable population bump inside the 680 loop.

Given the continuous addition of units that’s almost one of those things I’d want to wait to count. I can’t wait to hear the count after the landing opens.
