Amphitheaters built at shopping centers are crowd pleasers

The music has started at the Shops of Legacy. The four-year-old shopping center at 168th Street and West Center Road opened its first summer concert series with an all-day music festival June 21.

These open-air theaters are particularly popular at shopping centers such as Shadow Lake Towne Center and Village Pointe, whose designs re-create a small-town main street. It's not an entirely new development. Rockbrook Village shopping center at 108th Street and West Center Road has held summer concerts in a central plaza for more than 17 years.

Hogan noted shopping center developers are increasingly designating space for public events. "It used to be you'd try to shove as much building on a site as you could, as long as you had your required parking." So it was all parking lots and buildings, Hogan said, which doesn't work anymore.
