Starbucks will begin closing the first of 600 stores this month, but the company is keeping quiet about the locations

Well, for any other coffee drinkers out there, this may be interesting. A little birdie informed me that 4 stores in Nebraska will be closing down. 2 in Omaha, 1 in Bellevue, and 1 in Kearney. The official announcements will be made sometime in the next 30 days.

i can't wait for the stock market to level out and fears of oil get under control, that are making people not spend money. When a typically strong company like Starbucks (and the other day with a possible GM bankruptcy) start doing closings, you know the |expletive| is about to hit the fan (like it hasn't already).

Well honestly, from my experience, I wouldn't be surprised if you saw Fremont closed, probably the location at 120th and Blondo in Omaha, but the Lincoln stores actually do really well! Oh, and if the GI location closed, I'd go nuts...thank goodness it isn't closing.

North Platte also does really well, being the last Starbucks on the Interstate till Brighton, CO. It really is too bad because it sounds like the ones that are closing are the ones that haven't open that long. It is a sad sad day

I am curious, in places like New York, where you have Starbucks stores facing each other from across the street, how they'll get through this tough time for the company.

If by Midtown, they're meaning the 72nd and Dodge location, they're f-ing nuts! While it doesn't have much of a walk-in/sit down crowd, that's one of the busiest drive through spots I've ever seen. It feels like half of Omaha stops there as they're heading to work in the morning, with traffic backed up onto 72nd street sometimes.

60th and Center... Which means they are purely looking at the numbers not the 1/4 billion dollar development about to open across the street.

I haven't been to that location, wasn't there a Crane Coffee around that area at some point? The one I am worried about is the location on 156th and Dodge. Although a slower location, that store has the best personality. Plus, when I was working at that location it was the official coffee shop of both Trinity Church and Westside Church. The whole staff is like a family.

Yes at 60th, I meant the Starbucks at 66th and Center, by the under construction Aksarben Village.

That's not half as ridiculous as what those people are getting with their $4...

I asked one of the Barista's at 370 and 72nd of he of any Starbuck closing in the area. Apparently Starbucks is closing all of there new under performing stores. 42/370 (twinkcreek), 370 and 72nd, 72nd and Giles. Those are offical...that leaves Papillion with no Starbucks, Bellevue with one. What the heck were they thinking? I use to work there and I do know the newest one at 60th and Center had worst numbers of all of them. All these stores were built within the past 2 years.

I frequent the 66th & Starbucks quite often, and I asked them today about the closings. The girl I talked to said she hadn't heard anything about their store closing, she did mention the 3 listed above (72nd & Giles, etc.). She said that she thought they were doing pretty well for a new store that went into an area before the development was done.

Tastewise, i couldn't care less if i went to starbux or scooters. They taste different for sure, but both good IMO. But this is a great opportunity for the homegrown Scooters to make a move and, while not expanding too much too quickly like sbux, grow into strategic areas that starbux left behind

I thought they were high when they put them at both 370 and Giles in the first place. If they were smart they would only close one for the time being and see if the business evens out at the remaining store...

Starbucks releases first store closure list

Starbucks Corp. has released a list of stores that will be closing in July. None are in Seattle or Washington state.

Starbucks said last week that it would close 600 underperforming U.S. stores, but did not specify which ones. The move is expected to affect 12,000 employees.

The closures will be spread out until 2009. The Seattle coffee chain is suffering from a lagging economy and rising food and gas prices.

"Poor real estate decisions that were made, coupled with a very troubled economy, convinced us that these stores would not reach acceptable levels of profitability," Chief Executive Howard Schultz wrote in a memo to employees earlier this week. "We have been criticized by some observers for not publicizing the complete list of store closures at the time of the announcement. Out of respect, we felt that it was important to first inform our partners (employees) in the stores targeted for closure."

Each month, after closure dates have been communicated to employees, Starbucks will update its list.

The company is expected to start offering new products, including health drinks, next week.

I thought that was a weird location for a coffee house. You can see it from Hwy 370 but it is about as inconveniently placed and inaccessible for drivers on the hwy as you could possibly be. By the time you are able to turn off the hwy you have forgotten why you wanted to in the first place.

The Omaha area Starbucks slated to eventually close (there are 6 of them):

-All three Starbucks that have opened over the past 18 months along HWY 370..
-120th and Blondo
-63rd and Center
and..
-Fremont..

The 120th and Blondo store closing does not surprise me. It has been under performing for most of the 4 plus years it's been open..The 3 stores along HWY 370 from Bellevue to Papillion really were not given much of a chance to succeed. The 63rd and Center store closing is just downright a case of short-sightedness. This location just opened less than 8 months ago, in a NEW strip mall development...and at a prime spot for business once the $200 million AkSarBen Village project is completed. I can almost guarantee that once Starbucks vacates this store, a local coffee shop like Scooters will snatch it right up. Starbucks loss will ultimately be (probably) Scooters gain..And it is unfortunate to see the lone location just recently opened in Fremont close..

I'm a Starbucks customer myself..The manager of the HWY 370 (Twin Creek Dr) store is a friend of mine. My hope is that she is not displaced and lose her job..She is an excellent store manager..

FYI..

York, NE also has a freestanding Starbucks...and from what I understand, it's doing very well..

It was busy when I visited the place en route to Texas a few weeks back..

Yes, the York store is doing very well, and for that fact the Grand Island and the North Platte stores are also doing well. I was a supervisor at the 120th and Blondo store for awhile, and yes, it was pretty slow. That was a bad choice of real estate from the beginning. However, I do know that it did put a dent in the Scooters business right across the street. I was a manager for two of the stores here in Nebraska after that, 173rd and Center and Grand Island, so I know that its all about location. That is why I am also surprised by the closing of 60th and Center.

I was reading this article here about "Cities, Customers Launch
'Save Our Starbucks' Efforts" and this quote here got under my skin.

"Ms. Zackfia said that the states with the highest percentage of closures include many with low population density and signify that Starbucks "expanded before some markets were ready," she said."

It's not that we werent ready. Starbucks put them in poor locations...ie the 2 in Papillion and the 1 in Bellevue. 63 and Center would be poppin in a few years.

The only Omaha area closing I can honestly agree with is 120th and Blondo..

The others, ESPECIALLY 63rd and Center, are completely short-sighted on Starbucks part..Like I said in a previous post, Scooters will snatch up this location (63rd and Center) once Starbucks leaves, and it be their loss..

Aksarben Village will blow up in a couple of years and SBUX will wish they'd have never abandoned that locale..

I stopped in this morning for my almost-daily cup of coffee. I told the guy that I'd keep coming until they shut their doors, and he said "well, hopefully that won't happen. We're doing everything we can." So I don't know if there's still hope or not. I really really really don't want them to close!

Yeah I went there the other day and they're trying really hard to stay open. As well as either the one on 72nd and 370, or Giles and 72nd. One of those could survive.

Interesting..There appears to be a glimmer of hope here..

The closing of the 63rd and Center location will just allow Scooters to snatch it right up..Lets hope SBUX reconsiders their short-sighted decision..
