Welcome new forumers/forum activity

Wow... we've had a decent influx of new forumers over the past day. Welcome everyone!

If all this activity keeps up... I'm going to have to expedite the eOmaha.com web server upgrade plans (all I'm running at this time is a Pentium 120!! in case you thought the forum seemed a little sluggish... I apologize).

The website itself runs quickly, but the forum is noticeably slower. It's still not unbearable though.

Yeah it's a php/mysql (nerd speak :p ) thing... the raw (ie non forum) html does run fairly fast.

LOL! You don't attend Star Trek conventions do you?

I've actually heard of those particular languages before, but I certainly don't know much about them. I've been toying with creating a DSM site for years and I even went as far as taking HTML classes, but I rarely have the time for something like that anymore.

It certainly isn't elaborate, but what are your sentiments on creating something simple with Microsoft Front Page? Does that program allow you to use php or CSS?

Well Front Page certainly has support for style sheets... but PHP spends more of its time running on the server side and generating HTML output from this end. Of course Microsoft doesn't seem to have much interest in associating with PHP anyway (more common among the Linux people) ... they're more interested in the .NET server side stuff.

As I've said before... I'd be more than happy to set up a framework from which you could maintain a Des Moines site (ie you get a domain name... I'd host it... stick a forum underneath it... allow it to be FrontPage friendly so you could easily edit the content, etc).

Thanks for the welcome!

I found this site a few years ago when looking for pictures of the new UP building when it was still 20+ stories. Since then I have visited the site as much as I can, but only recently have had Internet access. I enjoy the posts and the heated but friendly conversations.

If you haven't figured it out DTO of course stands for Downtown Omaha. I LOVE the core of the city I live in. I remember when I was little and looking up in awe at the Woodmen Tower. Since then I have visited many other larger cities, but the Big O is still my favorite. DT is much differant than it used to be. I am excited by all of the progress and potential DT.

I am glad that I can now express my views with other civic, and progressive minded people. Here's to many more spirited posts.

. How many other EOmaha jrs are their. It's great to see their are other young people in Omaha who share an interest with the issues of this city. I thought you were young from some of your posts but not that young. Do you get alot of blank stares from your friends and family with the "Did you know Omaha this," and the "Did you know Omaha that."
It's nice to know their is a place where we don't have to listen to constant whining about how Omaha sucks or isn't a big city. I think we should all thank Jeff Huston for giving us something to do during the day instead of getting sunlight and spoken dialouge.

wow! outside of "streets" I didn't realize how many youngin's there were here. But it is great. There's so much talk about all the young people leaving because there's "not enough to do here" that it really is nice to see this enthusiasm.

Jeff, thanks for the welcome and for maintaining this site.
I really enjoy the site and the conversations.While I am not a native Omahan or Nebraskan, I certainly appreciate all that Omaha offers. In fact, I love it. It sure beats the winters that I grew up with in Northeastern South Dakota. ..

I'm constantly amazed at the negative attitudes of Omaha natives toward their city. It really is a matter of perspective. Relatives of mine in Minneapolis lament that they don't have the opportunities in Chicago. It seems that for a certain segment of people, the grass will always be greener in the next larger city in the region.

Omaha certainly doesn't have to take a back seat to anybody, a fact I constantly remind my relatives in other areas of.

Sodak... I think you solved the great negative Omahan mystery. They're for the most part... no different than anyone else in smaller AND larger cities as far as outlook. Certainly something exhibited among midwesterners in general.

If anything... Omahans may be a little more sensitive being on the cusp of the next tier of city. Probably not entirely unlike Louisville, Oklahoma City, etc... where people are obsessed with things like the next more upscale retail store... or a major league sports franchise... etc (things which I think would be great... but you won't find me lamenting over it).

You should teach me how to set up my hardware so I can host some sites and or forums

I have 2 machines with windows and 2 with linux 9.0. I'd like to use the linux machines for hosting, I just dont know how to set them up correctly. This is my first experience using linux too.....so i'm a big beginner.

The linux boxes are a 2000+ athlon XP with 384 mb pc133 60 gb 7200 rpm hdd. and a P3 866 mhz 128mb pc133(which im going to upgrade) and a 10 gb hdd. I have a 3mbs download 768 upload dsl connection with a router and UPS.
