186th & Center building

Does anyone know what is being built on the W side of 186th off of W Center? Looks sized to be your typical fast food joint but there are no signs up. IT is on the S side of Center to the W of the first street from the W that will take you off Center into Lowe's or the Newer Woodhouse service center. This is property that was used by Lanoha as recently as this winter.

Got to be a Sonic. I thought there weren't enough windows for a regular fast food joint, and then this morning driving by it looks as if they have begun to put up the metal beams that hold up the Sonic menu boards and awning/roof where cars can park.

its a sonic, i drove by there tonight and it is built the exact same as the other ones... interesting place to put it though, you can barely see it because its covered by all the trees from lanahoa

OK, so the Sonic is up and running and has been for a while. Now there is construction going on across the access street (South) from the Sonic on ground that has bee a staging area for trees for some time. Looks like a pretty good sized building. Maybe a hotel or apartments. Any ideas?

Now they are building a pretty good sized structure behind that sonic. It's amazing how fast this city is moving out west.

No kidding, also take a drive on 204th from Elkhorn, through Gretna and all the way to Nebraska Crossing... You will notice that 204th street is filling up very quickly..

I just enjoy how Omaha has grown so much! I just cannot believe how much it is reaching west nowadays... It is amazing. And, speaking of this 186th & Center area, I just am so thrilled to see so much better design incorporated into shopping plazas and strip malls and fitness centers and stores. Omaha is totally looking sharp!

It appears that structure is "Luxury apartments". they look nice and will help bring some density to that part of town, I am sure there will be more to come out in that area as well.

Nope, as a matter of fact in 2008 the number of residential permits was still near 5,000 per census.gov, while some march larger metro areas had less issued than that..

Look, there is nothing you can do about sprawl.. Except turn away people from living here.. Not everybody wants to live in a high-rise.. I do, and I will live in one, but as a large city there is nothing you can do to stop sprawl.. and look on the bright side..

I agree GRID..

My new Boss, who moved here from Portland was amazed at how big and clean the city is, as well as how nice the architecture is here.. She and her family is very excited about living here as they have heard and are now seeing some very good things about this place..

On this board and other places as well, people get so wrapped up into some odd details and it ruins it for them... Like sprawl, or the taxes (tax foundation has the state of Nebraska paying 9.8% and the average US citizen pays 9.7% for local taxes), or where to build a stadium..

Omaha, is in fact a standard that other cities are trying to follow.. We do live in a great city, and as soon as it hits 3million people, then Omaha will be legit by the people enthralled by ego size..

Well I don't think I even want to live in a true high-rise. Mid-rise would be nice if they'd actually build them. Instead they continue to build 3 story apartment complex all across the city. Yes even in North Downtown.

At 3 million Omaha better have a light-rail as well as streetcars by then. Not just one like Minneapolis.

I understand and hear you..

But the thing we all should be excited about, is the fact that Omaha is at a size and growing at a rate that will allow us to see more 10+ stories on a regular basis... And the more it grows the more often it happens..

Another great thing to look at is the fact that when an area is on a roll like DT/midtown/North Downtown, it is pretty hard to get that train derailed..

The one thing that can stop it, is a situation similar to what is happening in Michigan right now.. But I do not forsee anything of the scale happening here...

write me up to be in the height club, and believe me when the wallstreet towers construction starts, I will be watching the construction cab with the mouse curser pointer right on that re-fresh button...

The amount of new construction in the last 8 years in DT/midtown/North Downtown is staggering and very exciting... And there is no end in site... Once the stadium tops out, the reality will settle in and there is going to be some top-scale developers drooling all over themselves realizing the density of top-level entertainment facilities..

The amount of construction of some fantastic buildings 5 years from now is going to make us pee all over ourselves...

We all are able to experience something so unique and rare in the history of rising cities.. We are watching this city go from where it was 10 years ago to where it will be in 10 years, and be the ones first-hand to be able to describe the amount of changes that happens to cities that go from dust-bowl economy to super-power economy, from mid-sized and very slow growing to large-sized and rapidly developing city, from an embarrasing downtown full of junkyards to one of the most scenic downtowns in the country..

Without a doubt, we have some bragging rights with what we are able to witness..

Erik: Wow, it is great to see/hear your enthusiasm for Omaha, like the rest of us... I grew up here, and I really do feel like it is taking on kinda of a new feel... I'm not just meaning the dazzling changes to downtown. I just can't believe how much suburban growth has taken place down in Papillion/La Vista, and West Millard, and West Omaha, and Northwest Omaha... The city is just spreading out, and finally creating shopping plazas with neat architectural accents, and arranged in designer configurations, even naming them, with dramatic names set on street corners -- like you see in Denver and Phoenix, with rocks and pines! And, suburban developments finally have neat, creative entrances.

Overall, the town has really cleaned up. I was even on 72nd the other day, and admiring how they widened it from I-80 north, and it is lined with neat new buildings and plazas...
