I saw that rendering before, but based on the people in the stands I thought it was a Royals' home game from this year. MY bad.

Stage set for stadium prep work

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=2 ... d=10541655
MAGGIE O'BRIEN WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Construction workers have set up trailers in north downtown as they prepare to get started on the five-story, 24,000-seat new home of the College World Series.
Stadium groundbreaking
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The ceremony will be held at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday near 13th and Webster Streets.

A public open house will follow from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the grand hall of the Qwest Center Omaha.
Their first step will be to tear up the two Qwest Center Omaha parking lots near 13th and Webster Streets where the ballpark will be built.

Before they begin, Mayor Mike Fahey, Gov. Dave Heineman, Qwest Center and NCAA officials and local philanthropists will officially mark the beginning of construction.

A groundbreaking Wednesday will be followed by an open house at the Qwest Center. There, members of the public can take a look at the $128 million stadium design and have their questions answered, said Roger Dixon, president of the Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority.

MECA is overseeing construction of the stadium and will manage the facility after it opens.

"Even though it's winter, construction will begin," said Doug Parrott, a spokesman for MECA.

In August, Kiewit Building Group workers are tentatively scheduled to start on the stadium concourse and suite seating. Construction on the roof could begin later this year, according to a construction timeline for the project.

Work on the outfield is scheduled to begin in May 2010.

Last summer, the MECA board approved a $90.6 million contract for Kiewit to build the facility. Between 150 and 200 people will work on the project, which is scheduled for completion in April 2011.

Can't make it tonight (unfortunately). Sounds like a nice opportunity to communicate with MECA and emphasize the importance of having the Royals as a tenant! Can someone try to get MECA's perspective on this? Specifically, what are the main obstacles for Royal tenancy? Underscore the fact that there is a large attendance and quality difference beteween AAA and Bush League baseball.

i'm anxious! My wife and i drove by on the interstate the other day, and that's going to be HUGE! I mean an aerial map shows the footprint, but i was imagining it as if it were built and if it's 2/3 the height of Qwest, but bigger across, it's going to be impressive. I'd love it if they did a detailed rendering of North Downtown, with the stadium in it, from the 480 perspective...not just a street view, with everything blurred around it (like we see today).

Rafters? You mean scaffolding? That still there because they are just finishing up the repairs.

Last Saturday, On my winter trek across the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge , I took these photos of the new
Downtown baseball Stadium Construction site / North Downtown Motel District from the ...

... Spiral ramp to the Bridge.
Image

... Nebraska side bridge tower / Southside river overlook.
Image

If all things go as planned, in two years a shining new stadium will be in front of the North Downtown Motels. What a sight to see as you approach Omaha on the bridge.

I may post pictures of Stadium construction progress from this angle from time to time.

Haha... The stadium plan got approved without any significant retail... Just days after there was a public outcry of support for retail at the stadium at the Downtown planning meeting. Sad. :? :x

And Roger Dixon continues to make ignorant comments like "We're building a baseball stadium, not a strip mall." I used to not think anything of Dixon, but now I view him as completely incompetent, showing a dangerous lack of vision.

Yeah. What if someday one of the Qwest lots is actually being developed and they need a garage on the other one? "We are building a parking garage, not a strip mall". :?

I notice that they're not putting the piles in perpendicular to the ground. They have the thing angled somewhat, before they start driving in those things. Is anyone an expert in construction who can say why that is?

I wondered that myself. The row of piling farthest west is straight vertical but the next row in is angled a bit. I dunno. I'm sure they have their reasons.

it depends on the soil composition; if you make the pilings at an angle, you get a stronger footing because in some cases there is liquefaction. I don't know if that is the case for sure, but you can see the same kind of thing done when building bridges and the soil beneath is muddy/sandy. With what i assume is a large amount of weight based on how much brick is used, they make need to anchor the footings better so that there are no cracks in the foundation or any sinking of walls because of potentially soft soil. Essentially, if the footings form a "V" based on angled pilings, it's much harder for the foundation to sink. They are currently doing the same things with the new bay bridge in San Francisco, because they can't reach solid bed rock and need to secure the bridge because of the seismic activity. Different reasons, but same principles.
