I have to say... I'm disappointed with the Volvo dealership... no attempt at architectual aesthetics whatsoever. There is a trend towards better architecture among many local dealers ... examples... the Mercedes dealer on 144th... the 'Performance' dealerships out at I-80 and Giles ... Huber Cadillac. That Volvo dealer should be facing West Dodge or at least east so it can be seen from both the access road the Dodge) instead of backing up to it... and boast a large glass enclosed showroom. It looks just like the crummy Baxter showroom at 120th. They should have left it down at 72nd and L if this is all their going to 'upgrade' to.

The Performance Volkswagon showroom looks like another halfway decent look for out at their location.

But what is this?

Here's what I'm looking for... something akin to the Pontiac dealer my brother in law in Phoenix used to work at...

I mean impress us just a little.

I love the fact that we're getting another Volkswagen dealership...however, there should not be car dealerships along W Dodge Rd. What a waste of space. And if you are going to waste space like that, at least, like Jeff said, make it somehow appeal to the street.

I don't think this fits into Omaha By Design's vision for a "gateway" feature on West Dodge Road.

I completely agree with you Jeff except that I think the new VW dealership will look more than "halfway decent" if it ends up looking like the ones in VW's latest commercials. I dunno, I just really like that two story all glass building that appears in their commercials which looks to be what they want to build.

Huber's twenty-ish year old dealership looks better than what Gregg Young wants to build.

In addition to your list, I would also add the Infiniti (soon to become Porsche once they move) of Omaha dealership as well as Markel BMW. Its too bad that the Infiniti store is in such a crappy location, it really doesn't fit in with its sorroundings. And I like how Markel Bimmer is built into a hill giving it a two level effect with the service department on the first level, and the showroom on the second.

And I'm sorry, but having the strong passion for cars that I do, I have to correct Will in the spelling of "Infiniti." Of course, spelling Infiniti with a "y" has to be the most common spelling mistake in automotive history, followed by all the different ways people have butchered "Porsche."

I kind of have to disagree with Streets too in that I don't think car dealerships on West Dodge are a waste of space. I think, much like Cheesecake Factories, car dealerships retailing high end, or at least appealing, brands of cars can also be a way to show off that our city has made it. People who drive along W. Dodge pass by our Land Rover, Jaguar, Lexus, Hummer, Saab, Cadillac and Volvo dealerships. Not all of them have architectural appeal, but I don't think anyone will pass by them and think "eww, Lexus..." I think it kind of helps the city's appeal if people drive down W. Dodge and notice that we have a massive Lexus dealership.

I heard from an employee that the Greg Young construction bid came back so far over budget ($1.5 mil) that they had to scale back.

I agree about the dealership and have always moaned about this growing up in town: Omaha needs to be more picky about what kind of architecture it allows to go up. Everytime I'm out in the Eagle Run section of town, I just want to close my eyes while driving along the chaos of facades along that strip. I just hope West Center develops better, but I'm not sure I totally see that happening. I don't know why Wal-Marts and Lowes aren't forced to be all brick, etc. Instead, these bright blue and red tacky facades are allowed to go up. I think the FN Business Park is one of the few newly-developed areas of town that is totally "easy on the eyes."

Corect me if I am wrong but isn't the Lexus dealership in Omaha part of the PREFORMANCE group of dealerships?

PREFORMANCE has the Toyota dealership out along the interstate and they ahve the VW that is being built next to it. They also are part of the cluster that is along I 80 in Lincoln at 27ths street.

DO you think there is any chance that the Lexus dealership will be the next to move out by Toyota and VW in Omaha? Seems to make some sence and follow the patter for PREFORMANCE.

I highly doubt Lexus of Omaha would move out to Harrison. They're doing great business at the location they are at right now. They just finished expanding their lot for the second time last year. There is absolutely no need for them to move. I think with the VW dealer, the Harrison street plot of land will be about out of room for anymore new dealers anyway.
