is looking at Omaha seriously and One Pac Place is on the short list. Not sure on the time line but I would think its a simple lease signing and announcement not far behind.

They are also looking at the World Market Space at 78th and Dodge.

I was speaking with one of their corporate people a week ago and he said they aren't looking anywhere right now. Omaha, Kansas City, Des Moines and the rest of the midwest aren't on their radar when they do begin again. Texas maybe, Florida maybe, population centers where they can build many stores in close proximity.
Look at their map of current locations. Look where they are then look where they aren't.

This would be great, but my only concern is, if you look at their map, their closest distribution center would be St. Louis (even if they have one there - a dist. center might be even farther away). And since TJ's carries it's own name brand products, shipments to Omaha would take longer and the possibility of food spoiling would be increased. That leads me to believe it wouldn't be in their best interest to open one up in Omaha right now. If I were a betting person, I would think KC or Denver would see a TJ's before Omaha.

When I was in Chicago last year there was a TJ in our hotel building. I wasn't really too impressed with it. To me it was a bigger, overpriced Patrick's or Wohlners. I don't have a problem with a local place filling the void at MTC.justnick wrote:Weren't they once looking at Midtown Crossing? Shame that never panned out.

Maybe they don't think enough of you to be honest. No, thats not possible!
They wouldn't be asking specific questions about rules and regs pertaining to specific property in Omaha if they were not at least considering opening stores there.

If they do come into Omaha, meaning they have the distribution to do so, I hope they would have multiple locations, such as the centrally located 78th and Dodge or One Pacific areas, but also something in Midtown or Downtown.
I am ecstatic that we have Patrick's Downtown and Wholner's going into MTC, but TJ's would fill a void, too, and there is certainly a customer base will the dense population of residents and workers.

I don't know if TJ's would do well here. There stuff is really, really expensive and not what I would call common. I'm just basing this off of the one I frequented for about a week but I really don't see what the appeal is other than it's an urban grocery store. If they come to Omaha fine, if not that's fine too. I don't care what the sign says I just want the inside to be a urban grocer.

Agreed.
I think, given their most likely clientele, that Dundee/Happy Hollow would be their key market. I think we've talked about this, but the old Dundee Hardware store would be PERFECT!

I second that, Streets! Anything to get rid of Beer & Loathing - I'm on board. Even the old Dundee Supermarket (CU Medical Associates, now) would be good too. I remember when Beer & Loathing was the hardware store when I was a kid (early 90s). My parents always sent me up there to get one thing or the other. The supermarket across the street was nice too - I'm just sad it didn't work out for them.
Back on topic, though. I'm really impartial to the whole TJ's thing. I'm like DTO - if they come, great. If not, that's fine too. The only TJ's I've been to was in San Francisco and it was okay. My friend that lives there really likes it - she's on a no high-fructose corn syrup craze and she likes shopping there because she can grab anything off the shelves and know that it doesn't have that in the food.

Yeah, you're right. That's it. I bet they skip the other areas of the country just to come to Omaha since it isn't a very competitive market. Yep.Anonymous wrote:Maybe they don't think enough of you to be honest. No, thats not possible!

I'll take you up on that bet. Let me stay at your place for free the next time I'm in Chicago.
Patrick's is pricey and I go there often and the TJ I went too was more expensive and it seemed like a place to go to specifically get something as opposed to doing (for lack of a better word) traditional grocery shopping. I bought things from there because it was in our building and I needed wine and breakfast bars but looking around the store there was just a lot of what I would consider non-everyday grocery items.

One Pacific Place seems like an odd choice for a TJ, especially with Whole Foods only 1 mile away.
I'd love to see it fill that empty Wild Oats space at 78th and Dodge.

Yes, I'd agree with that and I only bought select items there, but the number of those select items kept increasing and weren't easily acquired anywhere else or if at all.DTO Luv wrote:Patrick's is pricey and I go there often and the TJ I went too was more expensive and it seemed like a place to go to specifically get something as opposed to doing (for lack of a better word) traditional grocery shopping. I don't think anyone is apologizing for what isn't here, rather it's more a matter of if you build it they will come! I get excited over food. Some get excited over crappy furniture stores a la ikea, but to each their own.

They are based in the Northeast, but are a lot bigger ($4.8 billion in sales) than Wholners... they have been ranked as one of the best grocery stores, best places to work, etc. for years. Back in my college years I used to shop regularly at Wegmans and once you've shopped there, it is hard to settle anything lessBrad wrote:That looks like an east coast joint.Anonymous wrote:I think we should forget Trader Joes and just go for a Wegmans

Exactly. Support your local stores, restaurants, etc. Keep it local and they will succeed and grow. THAT was the whole reason why Buy the Big O was started. Switch 5% of purchasing to local companies and thousands of jobs will be created. Wholners is the perfect example.Which is why I would choose Wholners. We have a lot of good local stores here in Omaha. We don't need an out of town chain here.RegisResident wrote:They are based in the Northeast, but are a lot bigger ($4.8 billion in sales) than Wholners...

Second, in my area there are six for a metro of over 4 million but many more within the distribution center area. I just think for them to make it work they'd need Omaha, Lincoln, Des Moines and Kansas City. We shop there for things that regular grocery stores dont have. Same with Wild Oats. Other than that we try to keep it local. How is the new Wohlners doing?

What Bob, you're not going to deny the possibility again. I know, it was enough to correct the post about the name of the shoe store.
I don't think its a great location but at least something is filling in that vacancy.

To me when a national retailer enters the Omaha market and opens their first store in OPP or Regency, that just means that their analysts blindly looked at a map and said, "Oh, well here's where the highest concentration of rich people is, so we'd better locate there", and probably put no effort into studying the true demographics of a metro and where the population is that will most likely patronize the establishment.
My best recent example is Anthropologie, who opened up at Regency Court about a year and a half ago. The regency woman is not their clientele, nor is the suburbanite. They should have been looking into Midtown Crossing or rehabbing a historic building Downtown.

As long as Wohlners makes a go of it in MTC, I'll be happy. A similar local grocery here in Champaign opened a new location right in the urban heart of campus last year and it's been doing great. I really hope more middle-class-oriented businesses realize that there are viable markets in older urban areas.
