Omaha Area Amusement Park?

Man you guys are really killing my buzz. So I guess our only hope is to wait for Six Flags to walk into Omaha with 500million and a request for at least 200 acres. I’m going to go take my Ambien now, see you all in Six Flag over Omaha.

well all i was saying is that it was planned, if they don't build at least one major ride I garuntee it will not draw crowds. Take Silver Dollar City for example. Park attendance was ok bfore they built their B&M coaster, but after their attendance shot through the roof and they ended up with another coaster this year, one which no one else has(Powder Keg) launced coaster that includes water and opened a whole new park with a woodie(Celebration City)

I wonder how accurate these are.

I count three coasters plus a kiddie coaster. And they said there would be one inside, so that's at least one more.

Like I said... I look for Minard to try to get one or two marquee attractions... and surround those with 'Peony Park' material... and then hope to build from there. I'm sure I'll take my family whatever form it takes. I enjoyed Peony Park as a kid... I miss even a simple spontaneous 'Octopus' fix.

The more I read these posts, the more I think it would be best if Minard gave his $70,000,000 to the people of Six Flags as an incentive for them to do something here in Omaha. Or better yet, Disney or Universal, but that'd be a little too ambitious.

its a snowball effect, as soon as there is a huge attraction, they will have more resources and $$ to continue to add on. Hopefully they leave plenty of room to do so.

i like the idea of surrounding the park on a couple sides with some cool looking buildings like they have, and i also wonder what is in the huge building at the entrance that spans the whole front of the park?

In both the talk surrounding the CB proposal... and now... Minard seems rather vague in just what this indoor park is supposed to comprise. I'd look for a 'Dave and Busters' type of setting. Forget the indoor roller coaster (aside from perhaps what you can find in the 'Playdazium' today... I assume that's still there.. my kids have outgrown Playdaze, haven't been there in a few years).

he should make that building look like a massive ship, like titanic or something. That would definitely draw the attention of people and it would fit the theme.

As far as indoor coasters go.. I enjoyed the one under the big top at Circus Circus in Las Vegas. All steel with a loop and a corkscrew.

Boy, oh boy! I wouldn't get too excited just yet, based on what I see on that "website." The diagram of the park, with the copyright 2005 below it, looks a whole lot like the plan he was pushing in CB. That, and the quote from the linked story about not having the land or the majority of the financing...deja vu.

Here's an idea.

Instead of pumping $2 million into the State Fair why don't we put the money towards this and jsut have the State Fair there. The Fair is an iffy draw but an amusement park would be a guarnateed draw with people from outside of the state coming as opposed to people in the state hardly going to the fair. Then we could use the Fair rides as "fillers" and spend the big money on big rides.

Government money and private investment has never worked because it is a conflict of interest.

It would create a lot of controversy and the state would never vote for that.

Besides, what would happen to the Carnies, that have "small hands...smells like cabbage", do?

One would assume Minard was fairly content with his overall plans for the CB park... ASIDE from a lack of financial backing. So here he is to give it another go... bolstered by the promise of LB500.

This time around he also has at least as one investment group in his camp that we are aware of ... this group out of Des Moines which the World Herald quoted and is commiting $25 million to the project. As best as we could tell last time around he had nothing. That he has Lee Terry sticking his neck out and speaking on his behalf says alot as well.

They better put me on Travis' commentary. I was probably the first person to call in (and long distance at that). He said Omaha doens't need an amusement park. He said Des Moines and KC are closee enough for weekend getaways and that we didn't need one because it would in effect keep people "stuck in Nebraska".

He made himself look like even more of a dumbass when he said we couldn't support a park because Peony Park failed. I remember going there as a kid and it was fun but my mom said the reason Peony Park failed was because it wasn't big enough to compete with the rides at Adventrueland and WoF. After seeing the pictures of the old Park at that Hy-Vee I would have to agree with her. Apperently Travis doens't see that people from Des Moines or KC will come to the park and that it won't just be locals attending. He said the rides are only fun for so long.

He also brought up the State Bill about helping with funding and said it was a bad idea because the park would fail. Also he added "I didn't think this state supported gambling."

At least he is in favor of light rail. That kind of confuses me though. His civic priorities seem to be all over the board. Light rail is good, but tourism in Nebraska with a cool theme park is bad.

The only reason I watch Travis Justice on occasion is to see what dumb |expletive| he has to talk about for the day.

That's a sleezy way of getting ratings. What ever happend to GOOD stories. I don't think too many people watch KM3 news anyway so it doesn't really bother me.

It seems like he didnt mention that peony park was around since the early 1900s. Its not like it was built in the 80s and shut down in the 90s.

Duuuuude, no bitterness, just a major sense of deja vu with Minard all over again. Last time around, he kept saying he had the financing all lined up, but when it came down to the nitty gritty and time to put pen to paper with the city, he only had a portion of it lined up for certain, but kept saying he was this close to getting everything else together - he just needed a little more time. The fact that his conceptual drawings haven't changed in several years tells me he's been more focused on securing funding than on any actual plans.

Hopefully this time will be different. Maybe the addition of the shopping and entertainment and athletic components will be the icing on the cake for this plan. One would assume that Lee Terry is savvy enough to not put his neck out on a project like this if there isn't a really good chance of success (of course, some people associated with a bridge in Bellevue might have a word or two about Mr. Terry when it comes to success in securing funding). If we end up with a bona fide amusement park, and not an updated Peony Park, great. If LB500 doesn't pass though, no one should be holding their breath.

Oh, and in case anyone hasn't figured it out yet....Travis Justice is an idiot.

How many people do you know that drive to KC every year to go to WOF. All of my 25-35 year old friends and myself go to WOF every summer. Omaha could totally support an amusement park. Also the park does not have to be indoors we usually go to WOF in october on a sunday. The place is decked out for Halloween, you wear your sweatshirt and jeans and there are less people.

Thats the dumbest thing I've heard. Peony park was on flipping 76th and Cass in the middle of the city. It was completely boxed in, outdated, and got vandalized constantly. Those were the reasons it failed. I don't get why he even does that commentary, no one cares how Travis feels. He needs to go back to sports.

This is somewhat off subject, but does anyone remember a waterpark in the Omaha area named Funworld? I remember going there as a kid, but I cannot seem to find anything about where it was or what happened to it. Perhaps it had a different name.

Tonight in Travis out of everyone only 2 people aggreed with Trav. One guy said he didn't think we had the population

or the climate to have an amusement park. The other didn't think we should give tax incentieves. Trav really poured on the fat |expletive| sauce when he said it would be better to have casinos than an amusement park.

I'm not sure if it was funworld, but I recall going to some place right aroung 72nd and I80. They had water slides and what not. Not sure if it's the same thing or not.
