The demo costs are more than the land is worth. Why would you? This is a great solution if you ask me. It brings life back to the property.

Correct, they are banners. I drive by this every morning on my way to work and I got to see them working on these from time to time. They did a pretty good job of getting this stuff attached and looking like painting. Certainly much better than they looked before.

For some reason, I think there is. I remember they had to remove a painted on sign off a building along I480, however they let all the Billboards along I80.

Actually, I couldn't agree with you more, S33. I lived a few blocks from this project in Baltimore when it was first being developed:

What an absolute shame.

This "art" exhibit simply panders to the gas guzzling car owners that are RUINING this world. This building should be the centerpiece of a redevelopment of I-80 into a PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY shopping corridor including bike lanes, wide sidewalks and street parking. It is a shame that these developers lack such vision. I am embarrassed that the City of Omaha or OmahaByDesign did not step in.

Yeah that project would look fantastic next to the single family homes in the area. It is super easy to access as well, which is another great selling point...

The main road to the left of that structure is Fort Ave, which is the only east-west road (up-down in the photo) in and out of Locust Point and Fort McHenry (yes, that Fort McHenry). It is the only east-west street in and out of that neighborhood, with the only direct access in the city of Baltimore to I-95.

I-95, the main north-south artery of the east coast, runs immediately to the south of this neighborhood (South Baltimore, Locust Point, zip code 21230) just out of frame, literally within blocks. I-95 is to the east coast as I-80 is to the continental US.

All of the other structures you see in the foreground of that photo are single family row homes and small, local businesses, save for the Domino Sugar plant to the immediate right of the top of the lighted tower. It is no more out of place in Baltimore than the silos are in Omaha.

Active train tracks more or less surround the peninsula. Most of the homes are in the $150-$200 sqft range and 120 years old - and did not see a significant drop during the recent housing implosion. To the contrary, the neighborhood saw more infill projects due to its waterfront location and proximity to downtown, mix of blue and white collar jobs, and walkable amenities.

The corporate offices of Under Armour are in the building immediately adjacent to the Domino Sugar plant, which share a waterfront vista with the two active cranes visible in the photo.

Advertising.com was also headquartered in that same complex. I believe they were purchased by AOL 6-7 years ago for roughly $500 million.

Oh but |expletive| that... where the |expletive| is the mother |expletive| WalMart?

Actually, there's one about 2 miles away, just out of the frame on the left. Accessible by bus.

I don't get it, did that used to by cylindrical concrete like the one off I-80? It looks way different.

FYI, the picture almost looks like downtown Pittsburgh, not sure why.

If the grain elevators were on the riverfront that would be awesome, but it is tough enough to get high rise built downtown let alone get a project like that in midtown out of the way of things.

It does show anything can be refurbished though. Very cool building.

The short part on the left was, but they were arranged in a square instead of a row. I want to say it was something like eight rows of eight... maybe 6 x 6. Don't remember for sure. I believe that is mostly parking now.

The taller part on the right was the actual "elevator", I think, plus administrative, etc. That's where the condo and retail are.

The views from there are absolutely insane. It's actually one of the tallest buildings in Baltimore. Plus, the zoning in south Baltimore does not allow for any new structures to be built over the standard height of three-story row homes (I forget what the actual number is...maybe 35-40 feet), so if you've bought one of those views nothing is going to be blocking it.

It was an active elevator until about 7-8 years ago when the elevated conveyor just fell over in the water one day. I got to watch them blow that up one morning, too. Awesome.

I was at the Emerging Terrain dinner at the silos yesterday afternoon. One of the best meals I've ever had. A great collaboration of the top local chefs using some of the highest quality, freshest ingredients that Nebraska and Iowa have to offer. NBC had some great beers there too.

Anyone happen to catch the coverage of this on channel 6 after the football game?

The "A" team wasn't at the station, apparently, because after running the identical promo for the silo segment and the congressional campaign about 18 times in the last hour of the game, they managed to cut to and from segments and into and out of commercials about 7 times in the first 5 minutes. It was pretty painful to watch.

Looks like the second phase the the art banners on the silos are in place. The original are now moved to the North and there are new ones up in the original locations. Has been very recently completed.

If you haven't checked out the climbing routes yet they are definitely a must-attend!! I've gone the last couple weeks with the fam and it's just a ridiculous amount of fun. There is gear there to use if you don't have any, people are willing to belay newer climbers and, while it's free, they do accept, and deserve, donations for a wholly unique climbing experience. Generally they're operating every Sunday from ~3-8pm but check their facebook page for confirmation. Bring some water and enjoy! This is a great thing for the area.

Yep, we climb most Sundays, weather permitting, from 3pm to 8pm. Anyone and everyone is welcome to attend and no experience is necessary. We have harnesses and shoes you can borrow while you're climbing with us. There is no charge to climb @ the silos but we do accept donations that go towards maintaining the equipment and facilities. This Saturday we are having a meeting with volunteers to brainstorm ways to make the silos a better experience. We hope to see you this weekend.
