Omaha is obviously beginning to attract the attention of the more exclusive retailers. Good acquisition for One Pacific Place. Once again, I think it's more desirable that we have many smaller retail centers with their own niche attractions... than one single mega center.

Cookware chain coming to Omaha

Sur La Table, a specialty cookware chain, comes to the table July 2 when it opens its first store in Nebraska at One Pacific Place at 103rd and Pacific Streets.

This is the 41st store for the Seattle company, which enters an Omaha market that also has upscale specialty kitchenware retailers such as Williams Sonoma at Regency Court and Oak View Mall and Le Gourmet Chef at Westroads Mall.

Company President Reneé Behnke said in a press release that Omaha is a city where people love to cook, whether a simple family dinner or entertaining on the weekends with friends.

"We look forward to welcoming them into our store and sharing our passion and expertise," she said.

Sur La Table carries more than 12,000 products from more than 1,300 vendors worldwide.

The 6,155-square-foot Omaha store features a demonstration kitchen where small classes, product demonstrations and tastings will be held.

Each retail store frequently hosts famous cookbook authors for cooking classes or book signings. Celebrity chefs such as Julia Child, Bobby Flay, Ina Garten, Jacques Pépin, Jamie Oliver and Rachael Ray have appeared at other Sur La Table locations.

The privately held company will employ about 25 full- and part-time workers at the store.

The original Sur La Table was founded in Seattle's historic Pike Place Farmers Market in 1972.

This is great news for Omaha. Sur la Table is way better than Williams Sonoma. Whenever I visit Denver I make a trip to Cherry Creek's Sur La Table. One Pacific Place will fit them well.

I have never heard of this store, but it is good that Omaha is starting to attract big name retailers. I'm still waiting for the Saks, Nordstrum's and Macy type stores.

This should be a great fit for One Pacific Place. Lot of good things going on over there. They are also really sprucing up the storefronts by individualizing the store front to the tenant. I think that improves on the whole lifestyle center.

'The $2 million project will update the shopping center's common areas so it gains additional features of today's popular "lifestyle centers": a 20,000-square-foot open air plaza with an outdoor fireplace; new landscaping and sidewalks; new parking and lighting; stained and natural concrete; and brick and cobblestone paths.

Yeah, we've been dealing with the construction all summer. The front of our store is finally pretty much done, and the parking is much nicer, too.

Can you guys believe that as late as 1985 that horse farm was where One Pacific Place is! Wow.

Well, that wouldn't be surprising since there were several noticeable typos including the "275,000 workers in the surrounding office buildings" and certain data "complied" by CB Richard Ellis/MEGA.

Poke seems to be gaining in popularity. Shucks sells it all the time now.

It's been hot on the coasts for a while. It's taken a while to get here, but what doesn't? I am stoked though for poke places opening in the region, and I was glad to hear about Pokeworks moving here.

Sur la Table is going out of business. The liquidation sale starts August 28, 2020. A few months ago the company went bankrupt and closed many locations, but Omaha survived that round of closures. Now the second round has come and ours is one that will be closed. Store is expected to be open until the end of September. Sad loss for Omaha.

One Pacific Place has lost quite a few stores. Jos. A Bank left in the dark of the night a few weeks ago, as did the Fidelity office. Landmark Luggage closed recently along with the yoga studio. Not a good sign for the mall right now.

That’s to bad about Sur la Table they had been at OnePP for a long time. Also I didn’t know about Fidelity closing as well, along with the long time luggage store. Back in the mid 80’s to early 90’s this was the epicenter of high-end retail for Omaha. I know Trader Joe’s does well so hopefully they can serve as sorta the anchor for the semi- struggling retail center until it can find its new direction. It’s still a good location I believe.

I was in the Sur la Table store last weekend. It was already horribly picked over. Sad to see them leave Omaha. The clerk told me that the manager was told by Corporate to “renegotiate a better lease” at OPP. Their landlord declined, so they were forced by Corporate to close.

Hard to negotiate a better lease in a shopping center that is historically near 100% leased.

Sur la Table has closed a lot of locations, but not all. Looks like the closest (to Omaha) two still open are Madison, Wisconsin, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

I know they closed their Plaza location in KCMO, which always seemed busy. Not sure if the KC metro has any other locations remaining.

Really sorry to hear about both stores closing, especially Joseph Banks. I bought my 'nice' suit from them last year, tailored from the ground up (ain't many stores left that will build a suit from scratch). They carried great quality suits, fabric, shirts, etc., and their service was amazing. I also heard that an iconic Omaha men's store, Parsow's, is closing. Sad.

There are more left than you might think. For example, Von Maur will tailor from the ground up as well and offer very high quality (I purchased a suit there a few years back)..

But I agree, sad to see these places close...

Heard that folks from Sur La Table’s corporate, the owner that purchased the chain in the summer of 2020 and subsequently closed over half the locations, came to Omaha to discuss reopening the store in the same location. It’s still vacant and looks just as it did when they closed a little over one year ago. SLT has reopened a few former stores, most recently one in California. Considering the Omaha store was significantly remodeled only a year before closure to hold cooking classes and sales were strong, they might be rethinking the decision if their overall financial stability has improved.

Two items of note at One Pacific Place. First, today was the last day of business for L’Occitane. After 14 years there they didn’t renew their lease. Told us that traffic had just dropped off too much and they were sort of the only thing left on that side that wasn’t a service business. Hoped their corporate might decide to open somewhere else in Omaha because they had a very loyal customer base, but just not enough foot traffic to make it at that location. Remaining merchandise was being shipped to other stores in the area so no big sale.

Second, the bay where Jos. A Bank was has a building permit in the window and construction inside. It’s for Halberstat’s, a men’s clothing store from South Dakota. Website shows stores in Sioux City and West Des Moines. Before JAB that space was Harrold’s, a men’s store from I believe Oklahoma. Guess that space is maintaining its tradition at least.

It’s official — Sur la Table is reopening in their former Omaha location around April 6. Jobs are now posted on their website for the Omaha location. SLT must be doing better out of the bankruptcy and with the new ownership. They have been reopening several stores around the country in the same spaces that closed over two years ago. Makes sense since most of their former spaces are still empty and sitting exactly like they left them, but now with very motivated landlords. Will be great for the other merchants to see One Pacific Place fill some of the empty bays.
