I could swear I saw something on this project on one of the news programs last night. Sadly, I was flipping channels way to fast and only caught the back half, but it sure looked like this project.

Probably not. on occasion you can spot people working around in the empty hole. I have a feeling some day this one'll actually get done.

So they knocked down a couple buildings, dug a giant hole near the middle of the old market, put chain link fences and concrete barricades up...and have just let it sit there for nearly two years. It's a giant eye-sore. At some point in time, don't the developers have the responsibility to either build or clean up their mess?

I agree it is a huge eye-sore, but don't forget that about 3/4 of the site was just surface parking before, so it's arguable whether it looks worse now. :yes:

It's interesting that the on site rendering shows a "sushi cafe" on the ground level. I wonder if there's any possibility that Hiro was originally slated to go in here before the stall out.

I could deal with puke-colored brick as long as it's actually real brick. When I think of "cost-effective" I picture the wood frame construction with that tacky fake stucco EIFS that all of the Holiday Inns by interstates are built with.

This location may be revived but another developer is fighting for a Marriott location elsewhere as well. It would seem that one of them should actually get built. No promises though!

A Chicago-based hotelier wants to spend $23.6 million to build a 155-room Hyatt Place hotel on the corner of 12th and Jackson Streets, if the city agrees to provide up to $3.1 million in tax-increment financing.

Site plans for the Omaha project depict a high-rise reddish brick structure, integrated parking garage and green roof deck area. Hyatt representatives did not return calls seeking comment.

This is such exciting news, hopefully this project will actually get built. I have to imagine all the business owners in the Old Market are jumping for joy with the thought of a nice size hotel being built in such close proximity to the core of the market. I also love the angled point of the roof line on the southeast corner of the hotel.

Does anyone know what happened to the approved TIF for the last project? And does approving the TIF before hurt or help chances for the current developer? The dollar figures seem to be pretty close, each about $3 Million.

This is the first thing that has gotten Ol' Hawkeye excited enough to post in quite a while.

This just plain needs to happen. 155 rooms doesn't sound like much....but every little bit helps as Omaha/CB metro area continues to firm up its place as an amateur/NCAA championship hotspot (CWS, NCAA Volleyball, NCAA Men's Basketball 1st/2nd Round, USOC Swimming trials, USOC Wrestling Trials, etc..).

In fact, Omaha/CB is probably better served by multiple smaller hotels like this, than one or two mega hotels, since it's such a walkable/driveable city, you can get the visitors spread out a little more without major inconvenience, and spread the economic impact throughout a wider swath of the metro than otherwise might happen if thousands of hotels rooms were concentrated in a smaller area.

This is exciting from the hotel inventory perspective, and of course from an urban infill perspective, and would at least be a little bit of salve on the open sucking chest wounds those of us in the Height-Obsessed Club still have from the failure to materialize of the Marriott hotel and Wallstreet Tower.

Probably, but with different materials. The article posted above mentioned "redish brick," and I'm guessing they'll want to tie it in as well as they can with the OM.

We have been part of the downtown and old market for 2 1/2 years. It constantly amazes me on the pace of change
and growth.

A hotel like this is a wonderful addition to the old market. It is also big enough to draw more people towards Jackson st.
Howard st. is wonderful and will always be the heart of the old market, but getting things to spread out some is perfect.
Really connects places like Nicola's and Hiro 88.
