Brix will open in November 2009 in former Wild Oats location

Brix a dynamic, new wine and spirits business concept, will open in about 21,000 square feet of the former Wild Oats building located on the corner of 170th and Burke Streets. The Brix concept combines three main business components to create a unique approach to wine and spirits retailing – product sampling, education and hospitality.

In fairness, there's a lot of traffic on that end of VP. They're literally a cougar hop away from Kona and Johnny's, so if they can show value and not suck things up, they have a chance.

Several of my friends moms growing up were stay at home moms. Wine was part of their daily diets, I bet this place will get some decent business. Although it does seem to be quite a large space. How does this sq. footage compare to a place like Spirit World?

I know a midtown stay at home mom in her early 30s that has a cocktail every night at 5pm (Mr. Midtown is a surgeon). She rings a little bell and the kids go play in the other room for a while because the bell means it's "mommy time." I'm not even kidding.

I really question the business sense of people who would announce their plans in summer to remodel an existing building and be open before all the key holidays crucial to their business, and then blow past every one of those dates. Hey, you move Heaven and Earth to "Get R Done".

It's their loss more than anyone else. Not too surprising there were delays after all the foul weather we've had since December 8th. Their sales would have been impacted by the weather anyway.

Too bad they missed the initial Thanksgiving date though....I'll give you that.

I finally checked brix out last weekend. I was impressed by both the selection (of wine, hard liquor and beer, as well as cheese) and the prices. The prices were below the average prices for comparable wines elsewhere in Omaha, about like Costco. They do need to work some kinks out. There were more than enough people willing to help me pick out wine (I don't need any help in that regard), but no one at all to wait on us at the cheese counter, so after waiting 10 minutes we left empty handed.

The Mrs. and I were there Saturday. They had set up 3 additional wine tasting stations manned my reps from the distributors of the particular wines at each station. Lucky Bucket owner Zac was then with a tasting station in the Beer area. And today at least the cheese counter was manned by two people. The place was packed. The weather outside was gray and misty. I wonder what crowds will be like on a beautiful Summer Saturday. But the farmers market may help it.

The prices were low. But I too, was expecting a much broader selection. But there were enough free tasting stations for me to cop a buzz.

I think it's absolutely essential with the size of that place to have affordable/reasonable options. Especially in this economy. I normally buy the lower end of the scale but will occasionally make a jump up in price point.

I finally went here today. Went in to see their selections. My initial impression was a waste of space. They had a decent wine selection, a normal beer selection, an average cheese selection, an above normal seating options inside and out, but it felt flat to me for some reason. Out of place for a VP experience, almost too Wild Oats memories to make it feel genuine. While I was there not a single employee approached me. It felt dead this afternoon. I really don't know what I was expecting... But it was not there.

I think you will find a completely different volume, energy and vibe on the weekends. Usually packed with groups of couples and friends.

Well, I do admit I was there on a Tuesday afternoon, and it looked like it was built for a nice sized social hour. There was just one lady at the bar, no barkeep, an employee checking the beer fridge a couple outside and myself at the time I was there. I would hope they do better than that, I think the big screen TV was set to CNN, so I have to wonder what clientele they are catering to.

A "normal" beer selection? Where do you shop? I think they have a huge variety of beers to choose from - more than Hy-vee. I agree with the poster who mentioned the better vibe on weekends - there are many times when you can't get a seat at the bar or a table on the retail side. Give them another chance!

More than HyVee? Slightly more than than one on Pacific. Does it have a make your own six pack? I go to one that had 8 bays to choose from. Heck I live in a village of 15k and I have a place that has 3 bays of beer to choose from. And yes, I am a beer snob.

Yes, I've done it once and I remember they had a pretty big selection. It's not in the coolers - it's on shelves on the wall opposite from them. I remember they had a pretty big selection, but I don't think it was bigger than Beertopia. But I'm pretty positive it's more than Hy-Vee.
