Big article in today's paper about how Dodge St will be slower for a few months as they resurface from 52nd to Turner.

Wouldn't it of made sense to start the resurfacing the same time they redid the sidewalks?

I think this may have been one of those projects whose timeline was accelerated because of State funds that were released to Omaha after extra money was found in the State roads budget.

Yes, I remember them saying this was one of the projects that was going to be funded by that extra money.

It is coordinated. Anytime a street is resurfaced, the City has to make the sidewalk ramps ADA accessible. So, they do this (and rebuild crumbling curbs) in the couple weeks prior to the resurfacing. How is a worker suppose to pour concrete for a new sidewalk at the exact same time an asphalt machine is rolling by? This same process was just used on Leavenworth from Saddle Creek to 60th.

In addition, the City has rebuilt many of the traffic signals poles/mast arms on this stretch and replacing some of the lighting.

The 50th to 52nd Street section was actually separate project...that involved a total redo of the sidewalks as well as retaining walls. Fortunately, all of this work is being done at the same time, so there is quite a bit of coordination.

Lane restrictions start ahead of Dodge Street makeover

Orange cones already line Dodge Street on Sunday night in preparation for a $2.5 million construction project that will last for two months.

The barricades are up, cones and barrels are out, and lane restrictions have started from 52nd Street to Turner Boulevard, leaving residents and drivers worried.

"A lot of people's lives are disrupted, and it feels as though we've been marginalized, that this segment of Omaha has been, the needs have been completely ignored," said resident Margaret Bowser.

Maybe I'm not reading this right, but is she complaining about getting their infrastructure needs ignored in an article about them being updated? smh

When I lived in NY I knew a guy who worked paving the roads and this complaint is number one on the list of complaints.. Come on its Omaha there are a ton of different ways to get around this construction and its not that hard to figure out..

She was complaining that the busiest bus route in Omaha will not have stops from 44th to 54th street, making it basically impossible for people with disabilities like her, (wheelchair bound, amputated leg) who rely on the #2 and live in that area to continue using it.

I realize Underwood is not an option given the continuing construction in Dundee, but why not just keep it on Farnam from 44th to 52nd? Instead they are detouring to Farnam then going back on Dodge and having no stops? It would still be an inconvenience but not as unmanageable.

Still, if all they are doing is grinding off the top couple of inches of asphalt and replacing it with with a couple inches of asphalt, why does that take almost two months? Do the work at night, let traffic drive on the ground down lanes during the day, and then resurface at night. Only grind up one night what you can resurface the next night. That minimizes the area of disruption. This is how such projects have been done in Omaha for many years.

In front of UNMC they have the street ground down to the old brick streets and there are some streetcar tracks showing up as well. Pretty cool to see the history under there.

I remember those "tracks". Unless you owned a auto (guestimating less than 50% did...mid WWII era), if you're from north of Ames St (really north of Cuming St), you took the streetcar south on 16th, or 24th (my neighborhood), transferd to west bound at either Douglas ...(which, then at about 40th, it turned north and then followed Dodge west to(I don't remember?)), or Leavenworth, which took you out to Aksarben (end of the line) which was prophetic, if you liked to bet on the "ponys".

You can lay asphalt from 30 degrees up to 230 degrees. I used to do it when I was much younger.

108th between Dodge and Blondo finally has been too. That stretch was horrible. Although it's too bad that they don't just widen this section already. I would have thought with the new TDA HQ that this would have gotten pushed up due to more people going this way.

Maybe a little off-handed, dry humor, but nothing about it was inherently "stupid." Drive down Ames, you may get the comment.

My guess is that you, like every other overly politically correct nutjob in America, drew a racial connotation between "24' rims" on Ames street. In other words, you were offended without even really knowing why you were offended, so you lashed out with an eye roll.

By the way my car has 18" rims - Ames is a rough side, no matter what you have as rims.
