Work Begins at Crossroads

Sorry I don't have any current pics, but after todays photo shoot at FNB, Jhuston, Coyote, DTO, and I talked about the crossroads Younkers renovation. Jhuston and Coyote told us that it was dtripped down to the support members. I have been in that store a few times, but looking a the empty structure, I always forget that the building is three stories, so I really am starting to think that they are going to tear the building all the way down and start over. There is a chance of a two story Target, but there is no way they are going to make it three stories.

I got to go by it today and it is bare walls except for the first floor. I think it could be a 2 story Target. One floor could be for the clothes/appliance stuff and maybe the other could be a grocery store

But having a section that stops on the 2nd floor of the mall seems stupid to me and that Simon would rather keep it open for in-flow into the mall.

Perhaps a two story target with parking under it. Another idea could be a storage wareshouse on a portion of the lower floor.

I'm hopeful it will be a multistory store. Otherwise, why would they take such care in taking down the outer walls but preserving the floors.

One theory I came up with on saturday when we were talking about this is, I think they have to recycle a certian % of everything they remove from the site so it might be easier to carefully take down the building than just tear it down, the sort it out. When Wards turned to the Jones Store at the Westoads they tore it completely back to the Iron, then started new with the old iron.

It probably has asbestos and requires certain precautionary measures.

I am pretty sure that it will be a Greatland Target, which is not quite super, but larger than a regular.

MAT moves stop at Crossroads Mall

The location had been near the southwest corner of Younkers but was moved just west of there because of the demolition of that store to make way for a Target. The transfer stop was changed as of Monday.

does this mean that the target is going to be a sprawling one story building instead of an intelligent three story one?

I am starting to think so, they are ripping up everyting from just south of the parking garage all the way to Dodge Street and from 72nd street all the way to the bus stop.

You should see how much has changed since you took that picture a few weeks ago. The top floor is almost completely gone and the parking lot has totally been removed on the south east corner.

I drive by the site almost every day, and I keep hoping that they will stop with just removing the top floor, and make it a two story Target, but I have a feeling that I'm going to be dissapointed...

As previously mentioned, I would think Simon Properties would want at least a two story anchor at that location. Isn't there two levels of mall space that lead to the Target anchor slot? If it is a one level store, it will kill the traffic on the second floor leading to it.

If Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines is any indication, that replaced a two story Younkers with a one level store (there was only one level of mall space in that anchor area).

I had thought they were going to remove the entire building and rebuild from scratch... meaning it could end up being one or two stories.

I'll try and snap a pic of the 2 story one on Addison street in Chicago next time I'm that direction.

The second floor only exists from the foot court back to Dillard's.. it doesn't extend out to where Younkers/Target is.

What happenned to the ring of high-rises that Omaha by Design proposed for this area? Obviously thats just conceptual, but why would the city approve a brand-new Target that could block this from becoming a reality?

It kind of reminds me of all the billboards along I-80, approved right before the Omaha by Design proposal, including measures to imrpove the appearance of our interstate system, was approved.

I think the Omaha by Design ideas are awesome, but is the city really behind them?

I heard or read it would be a new concept of the Greatland stores. Even though the Mall is one level there I imagine the Target will be two becuase the 72nd side is a level lower than the mall. They're not only tearing out the Younkers part, but part of the mall there as well.

I don't think the city could have turned down this request with out anything ready to go in the Omaha by design idea. It would have killed the mall in the interim and I imagine, Simon (mall owner) would have successfully sued.

I wouldn't make the trip just for crossroads, I was in a Target in DesMoins last weekend, they are all the same

Yes...there sure is.

I used to live just north of Ingersoll Ave. before I moved to Chicago. We are moving back to Des Moines at the end of the month...and our new condo will be over looking Ingersoll (but address is actually Grand Ave). Can't wait!

LOL...No...but its twice the size of our current condo and worth $100,000 less (and its brand new!). You guys will be invited over for a quick tour if ya want. It'll be full of boxes (we will be moving in just a couple of days before the meet).

Today I was at Crossroads and took these pics. Im pretty sure now that the whole building will not be torn down and that the Target will be a 2 story version. First off, if they were going to knock down the whole thing, wouldn't they just swing a wrecking ball into it instead of this slower process? Secondly, I saw orange painted numbers on the upper colums and nothing on the lower ones. 3rd and the most obvious sign is the third picture, the man on the machine appeared to be scoring the grout lines between tiles with two other guys using push brooms. There is no reason to do this if they were to knock it in. Perry Mason aint got |expletive| on me.

I could be wrong though but if they are ripping it all out, they are going about it the wrong way.

It does seem as if they have been going about this is an unusually methodical manner (if they intend to bring the entire structure down). How long have they been at it now? Enough guessing. Why doesn't someone contact Simon Properties.

It still really upsets me off that they're closing the Saddle Creek store. If anything, they should be putting the same size store
as they are at Crossroads in at Saddle Creek, not getting rid of it all together. It's ridiculous.

How could Target justify two stores within 25 blocks of each other? And on the same street...almost? The closest Target to the new Crossroads location is 120th and Center ( a small one at that) and 144th and Maple, over 5 miles away. Saddlecreek and Crossroads are only 2 miles apart. Can any retail chain afford to have stores every two miles? Well, there is Walgreens, which has a store on almost every corner in town.

It still really upsets me off that they're closing the Saddle Creek store.

I was told by a friend who works in management at one of the other Targets in the area that Target didn't own the building on Saddlecreek and that is one of the reasons they were closing it. Also they will have the new one at 72nd and Sorensen Parkway in the next year or so.

I read the Saturday story in the W-H..

This looks to be a much more significant store than originally anticipated..Further substantiating a point I've continually made that Crossroads will soon see a second renaissance and will prosper beyond expectation once again..A store like this can be the rocket-fuel/catalyst for this!..

I hope so. We need a strong retail anchor in central Omaha. I did not want to watch Crossroads Mall waste away. It's painful in KC to see what happened to Bannister Mall.

What is the status on Bannister? I used to live near there and was at it often in the early 90's. It was nice then. What ever became of the Walmart concept store across from the mall that I believe was called a Hypermart? IT was HUGE! Almost too big to find anything. I think it was their first attempt (walmart) of putting a grocery strore under the same roof as a Walmart. That being said it was way bigger that an super walmart I have ever been at.

I think this will be fantastic for the Crossroads, although I am upset to that it comes at the expense of retail further eastin their absence at Saddlecreek. What is the status of Shopko these days? Are they expanding at all? It seems like they could benefit from going into the Saddlecreek location.

The 2 story Targets in Chicago are very nice. I'll have to try and get a couple of photos. The sidewalks even have the "target" in them. The insides are the same for the most part though.
