I’m really trying to gauge in my mind, in reality- based on the current level of growth, when the Omaha MSA only will hit 1 million. Based on the current 9200 per year population gain estimate, we’d be looking at 7 years- 2025, before the MSA hits I million. The CSA would hit the 1 million number in 3 or 4 years..

I’m still a little more optimistic that the Omaha metro will hit that magic number by 2023 or 2024...

Yes, I agree. It’s a pretty solid bet the MSA will hit the 1 million mark by 2024. I believe the CSA will hit that number by the official 2020 Census...

It’ll all depend on the economy. When the national economy is strong, Omaha grows slower. When it’s more unstable, Omaha grows faster.

It’ll all depend on the economy. When the national economy is strong, Omaha grows slower. When it’s more unstable, Omaha grows faster.

I tend to agree with what you’re saying. Omaha typically, during times of economic chaos, usually performs beyond national expectations and realities (while at the same time, not being completely immune during the down times). This environment is more stable and thus, more attractive to people/business wanting a fresher start/location..

This said, Omaha’s Growth this decade has been very consistent based on the yearly estimates. My hope is there is an uptick for a year or 2 which propels the growth to the 1 million number about 18-24 months faster than anticipated ...

So Wiki was updated, it has the CSA at 970,023 and the growth rate since 2010 at 7.54%.
Lincoln at 353,120 with a rate of 8.83%.
Omaha Lincoln CSA of 1,323,143. Lol

So I took the average yearly growth from 2010 to 2017 and got 999,156 by 2020. However the growth has slowly accelerated since 2010 so just may just maybe it could be a million.

My hope is, with “compound interest” as stated before, the Omaha CSA hits the 1 million population mark by the official 2020 census.. I’m hoping to see the MSA do the same thing by 2023.. Now of course, the US Census could throw a curve and combine us into the Omaha-Lincoln CSA. So you never know..

Omaha keeps earning several “wins” in the tech world Silicon Prairie arena.. The Facebook Data center is a big time get.. Toast opening an Omaha data/operation center etc.. This attracts college graduattes to consider Omaha..and if they’re a native, STAY here as opposed to “getting out” of Omaha..

It’s the old adage- If you have the attractive, diverse, competitive jobs in your metropolitan portfolio, you’ll will be on the radar and people will move here.. More so now than ever before, Omaha has developed this type of portfolio. We just need to keep winning...

Putting it into context, the Combined Omaha-Lincoln CSA has a population of 1,323,143.. that would rank as the 43rd largest CSA- just behind the Birmingham AL, Memphis and Oklahoma City CSA’s (The Omaha CSA alone is currently 970,023 and ranked 56th)..

I think Omaha-Lincoln functions much more within this peer population realm.. Even though it’s not “officially” recognized by the US Census..yet.. I’m guessing those commuter 15% threshold numbers have got to be pretty close today, if not there already.. It’s going to be very interesting if the CSA adjustment comes this year. I predict it’s right around the corner...

I’m not 100% sure, but I believe if they announce a CSA adjustment this year, it’s going to be in the Fall. I’m thinking October..

If/when this CSA change happens, I’ll be happy to see it because it makes sense and it’s been a long time coming. From an excitement level though, seeing the Omaha MSA hit the 1 million population mark within the next few years will be the most satisfying overall.. Well, to this numbers nerd at least, lol...

Surprising that Omaha jumped almost 20,000 since the 2016 estimate. Of course, the estimates are revised each year as well, so if you look at the revised 2016 est vs the 2017 estimate, Omaha gained 1,660.

The only thing I hate with the numbers is that when you look at the 2010 actual population census in relation to the estimate base, Omaha's base was almost 40,000 than the actual population. I scrolled through and didn't see another city with that large of a disparity. Hopefully that doesn't happen again with the official 2020 census.

I completely agree. Something seemed very amiss with the 2010 actual Omaha city number vs the estimate. I too am hoping they've gotten that corrected and last decade was just a blip on the radar.. At least they got the MSA/CSA numbers pretty much right on queue in 2010...

The only thing I hate with the numbers is that when you look at the 2010 actual population census in relation to the estimate base, Omaha's base was almost 40,000 than the actual population. If I were to bet I would say they didn’t take the annexations into account. If I recall, in 2009 the population was around 440,000 which makes the revision very logical because I remember being stunned at the original 2010 count.

You know, I think you're right about that. I'd have to look it up, but I think Elkhorn was annexed around 2009.. and the official Census number probably didn't take that, or several other late decade annexations into account...
