Airports in Omaha, dam, kc

Post by Bob from Omaha »

It's interesting, what's going on in Omaha, Des Moines, and Kansas City.
Kansas City is having their airport built privately.
Omaha has been planning for expansion for over a decade and is slowly but surely making that happen on a demand basis.
Des Moines is struggling to finance a new terminal. Its current terminal is woefully inadequate. Now it seems that Des Moines is going to have to wait a decade or more for an appropriate terminal.

It's very interesting how the three cities have dealt with expansion.

It embarrasses and infuriates me that Des Moines has an "International" airport, but Omaha doesnt. I have never understood why that is. I know Eppley is very small, but they have a heck of a lot more traffic going thru it than Des Moines, and are pretty much the same distance from Canada and from Mexico.

The name of our airport doesn't make a difference to me whatsoever. I mean, OMA is the airport with an international flight

Eppley Airfield IS an international airport and is designated as such. The name is up to the people that run the airport.

Oh for crying out loud. Whatever. My two favorites are Oklahoma city and Albuquerque. Look them up.

Enough about OMA vs DAM. It's boring.

You mean we can’t compare Epply to Damascus International Airport (DAM)? But they get International in their name! :D

Look. It's a gimmick. You toss International into the name. It makes you feel good. It makes the airport sound important. For whatever reason those who have a say in Omaha choose not to use International in the name of the airport. Whatever. By me the most important thing is the availability of non stop flights to the most cities. If the Omaha airport was named Eppley Landing Strip but had flights to 34 airports including Canada AND was on the way to a well thought out expansion and modernization isn't that what counts?

That's not a dig at Des Moines. There are lots of cities with International in the name of their airport and no international flights.

I just don't care what the name of the airport is. I live in a city with an airport that has about 600 flights a day including many international destinations and served over 34 million passengers AND YET the name of the airport is
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport...no International anywhere in the name. How on earth do they pull it off?

So go ahead Des Moines. Pretty much everyone is ok with your name.

I seriously hope they never remove the 'Airfield' moniker.. it's unique, I love it.

Honestly the bigger the airport gets the more awesome the Eppley Airfield name gets. Although I don't expect us to expand internationally beyond Canada and Cancun, if there were an overseas flight landing at the Airfield that would be amazing :D
